No, Downey is good in short doses. He hasnt been Agitating nor Hitting the way he did when he was played sparingly. When he played games in bunches he didnt have the same effect. If we needed a reserve full time, I'd better be Ellis.

Line ups would be good like this

Filppula - Datsyuk - Holmstrom

Hudler - Zetterberg - Franzen

Cleary - Draper - Maltby

Drake - Kopecky - Sammy

*Downey, Ellis*

I honestly like the idea of Franzen movin up to play with z and huds. But I'd really like to see the big line reunited. Cause it felt sooo good!

Z-D-H

Huds-Flip-Franzen

Clears-Draps-Malts

Drake-Kopy-...Downey

Let sammy sit for a little while. I like the guy, but I'm all about "the what have you done for me lately" school of thought. I guess you could argue you might sit Kopecky, but I believe he tends to try and play to the level of his line mates. Downey and Drake, yes Drake, both scream intensity. I think it would serve him well. If it doesn't work, sammy is substituted in.

Z-Dats-Holmstrom

Cleary-Flipps-Samuelsson (I saw a spark between Cleary and Sammy awhile back and im telling you they would kill it)

Huds-Draper-Maltby (Huds could work well with Draps speed)

Drake-Franzen-Downie (The big line and Kopecky wouldnt be playing!!!!)

Yes, but Sammy, for some odd reason, is Babs' love child therefore he won't sit.

i personally think malts is the guy to sit, they are a few others that could bring what he brings to the pk, and i'm still wondering why he was signed to that 3 year contract, i'm just lovin what downey brings to the table every game, but malts has also paid his dues to be on this team, i'd still rather see downey in tho.........just my opinion

Agreed. Maltby wont sit just because he's Maltby, but he'd be my choice to sit for Downey....even ahead of Kopecky. Never understood why he got re-signed for that long either.

odd isn't it. i've noticed this too. sammy's a streaky player, when he's on... he's on! there's no arguing that. i'm just hoping the guy turns it around here pretty quick. if nothing more, for my own sanitys sake!

Maltby why?

He hits hard, agitates like hell, good on the pk.. big part of our team chemistry and toughness.

he's much more valuable then downey.

I'll give you the chemistry reason, but thats it. Good on the pk? So are a bunch of other guys on the team. Hits hard? Definitely not anymore. Agitates? Again, nothing like he used to. Toughness? Heck no. Downey brings a dimension the team lacks, Maltby doesnt.

Not going to try and argue over it.

But the game thursday against the wild, Maltby was the only 1 hitting people..and to say he isnt tough is incorrect, he is tough he just doesnt have to beat everyones ass to prove it.

yeah maltby is tough. agreed, but i feel he's replaceable, i really don't like to say it, i've watched him his whole career and he's done so much for this organization, but i feel his time is up

I hate to disappoint many people, but Samuelsson is not going to sit. He's one of the few right-handed wingers on the team that has somewhat of a scoring touch. That's why he plays on the point of a power play. I'd be all for him and Chelios splitting time on the PP at that position, but outside of those two, there's nobody left on the point (other than Lebda, but he's lefty). Samuelsson is not my favorite player but he is not costing this team games by himself, is far from a liablity, and not costing the Winsgs much at $1.2 million. Everyody's expectations of him are way too high.

Maltby isn't going to sit because of his importance on the penalty kill, even thouh the Wings have a fair amount of people doing it.

Kopecky probably won't unless he completely falls in the s**ter because he is young and has the most potential for development in the long term. He needs all the games in that he can get so Wings brass can see if he can possiblly develop into more of a grinder with some scoring touch, or just fall off the map so the two can go their separate ways at some point in time. I hate to disappoint people though, that time is not anytime soon.

Drake might get rested for back-to-back games but come on, does Downey provide that much more than Drake to where he'll make that much more of a siginifcant difference?

Look, I like Downey, but there is a reason he might only play sparingly when the team is healthy. It's because he has very little offensive upside and just provides physical play on a 4th line. He's not going to kill penalties or play special teams, while the others above probably will to some degree. Before I get yelled at, Maltby and Drake don't have that much upside offensively either, but it's not realistic to think that Downey would be that much better than them at assisting or putting the puck in the net.

Again, I like Downey, but the drooling over him fighting every so often and clamoring for him to get in the lineup is a little bit ridiculous sometimes. A 2-game losing streak (one being a shootout loss, the other a 1-goal affair) for a team that has been kicking tail most of the season does not constitute just dramatically changing the lineups around. People just want to see Downey in the lineup b/c they've lost two straight, and Downey for the most part is a fan favorite.

The roster will be fine and the team will be fine with everybody healthy.

EDIT: And before I get grilled for wanting to see a "soft pansied team", this team was from pansies last playoffs overall, even without Downey. I'm all for grit/toughness/hustle, but it's not like the Wings were consistently pushed around the entire playoffs (and I don't think they were really that intimated/outhit in the Ducks series), and the same has held true this season for the most part as well.

Maltby was the only one hitting because Downey wasn't in the lineup ;)

If so, who would you prefer sit and why? Throw some projeceted lineups at me.

of course all players make some mistakes, but I think the last I saw of downie was behind our own net, he fanned on the puck trying to scrape it off the zamboni door, the opposition grabbed it and scored. Honestly it could have been rafalski, (scrunched up jersey, 8 coulda looked like a 0 maybe) but at that moment I just remember thinking skill>grit.
