Guest Canadian Wings Report post Posted January 26, 2008 Detroit scout Hakan Andersson is famous for unearthing talented Europeans in unlikely places and stealing them in the cheap rounds of the draft (Henrik Zetterberg, 210th in 1999; Pavel Datsyuk, 171st in 1998). But he admits a spell of laziness opened the door for Vancouver to steal away Alex Adler. "He said the best player on their men's team was this kid," Andersson says. "I said to find out how old he is, and my friend called me back and said he was born in 1986, which was that draft year (2004). I didn't have time to go see him until late January or early February. It's a seven- or eight-hour drive." But Andersson liked what he saw enough that he wanted a second look at Edler, during the Third Division playoffs. "The second time I went to see him, I called the coach first, just to make sure [Edler] was playing," Andersson says. "It turned out the coach was friends with an agent, and the agent starts sending e-mails to scouts, saying you should come and see this kid. When I think back - and this has been on my mind many times - I think that was my mistake. I never should have phoned the coach. It was just me being a little lazy." http://www2.sportsnet.ca/blogs/hockey_hear...t_edler_escape/
LeftWinger 5,153 Report post Posted January 26, 2008 ...well Detroit didn't do too bad with their 3rd rounder that year (same round Edler was taken) Johan Franzen...
Guest Agalloch Report post Posted January 26, 2008 I'm sure one mistake can be forgiven when thinking about all he's done for the Wings. Plus, Franzen is one of my favorite players, so I really don't care.

I joke i joke, i kid i kid. Edler > Franzen tho. I just posted this because i'm sure nobody knew about it before. Not like i really care.
betterREDthandead 58 Report post Posted January 26, 2008 Franzen was not only the Wings' 3rd round pick that year, he was our first pick.....three spots after Edler. Holland would have had to trade up to get him.
norrisnick 1 Report post Posted January 26, 2008 Franzen was not only the Wings' 3rd round pick that year, he was our first pick.....three spots after Edler. Holland would have had to trade up to get him. Incredibly hard considering the Nucks (who didn't have a 2nd or 3rd rounder) feverishly worked the phones to trade up in front of our pick. Similar to the Berglund situation with the Blues in '06. They traded up and snagged him 4 spots before our pick so we ended up trading down to get two guys in the 2nd round. And the Berglund one hurts because he's an amazing talent.

Grabbing Franzen was what the Wings truly needed: a mature, physical forward that could fit in right away. This is hardly a mistake. Would he have still been around in later rounds? Who knows. e_mcgrath88 0 Report post Posted January 27, 2008 The wings werent aware at the time that he was on any other teams radar.. they figured they could have grabbed him later in the draft.. unfortunately Vancouver knew about the kid too and scooped him before the wings could. Valtteri Filppula 0 Report post Posted January 27, 2008 I don't know....it doesn't sound like "laziness" or a "mistake" to me...He called to make sure the kid was playing, I would've done the same thing....he didn't waste his time driving 8 hours...I'm sure he's a busy guy and could have been doing about ten other things that day too...how was he supposed to know the coach was friends with this other guy and blah blah blah....just sounds like an unfortunate situation to me...life goes on and we still have a good team... sverige 0 Report post Posted January 27, 2008 It's beginning to annoy me how other teams seem to look to Detroit and try to steal players that Detroit has put in the hard work to find. Kenny Holland needs to start dishing praise out to some really s***ty players in hopes that some ******* teams are stupid enough to draft them just because Detroit shows interest. Detroit # 1 Fan 2,204 Report post Posted January 27, 2008 I'm glad we missed him. He's not physical, decent on the powerplay and good in the shootout. Not what we need.

I hate to break this to you, but other teams also put time into finding prospects. Snooze you lose. Detroit snoozed, Vancouver didn't.
rougerman 0 Report post Posted January 28, 2008 (edited) I'm glad we missed him. He's not physical, decent on the powerplay and good in the shootout. Not what we need. The kid is 21 years old, and He is 6' 4". He is nowhere near his prime years, and from what I've read he has unlimited potential. Any team in the league can use a large D-man who can skate, move and pass the puck as well as he has proven as a rookie. Fifteen minutes before the Dallas Stars were to choose 91st, former general manager Doug Armstrong agreed to give Nonis his third-round selection in exchange for the Canucks' third-rounder in 2005, which was to be a stronger draft class. "As soon as the Canucks got that pick," Andersson says, "I told everyone at our table I'd eat everything on it if Vancouver didn't take Edler. We drafted Johan Franzen, so we still got a good prospect with our pick. But I still think about that phone call I made. The fun part in all this is seeing how well Alex is playing." http://www.canada.com/vancouversun/news/sp...;k=7839&p=
Guest LivingtheDream Report post Posted January 28, 2008 I'm sure plenty of teams are now scouting the heck out of Sweden, but I am also sure the Wings scouting will be one step ahead in finding new places and new players. Russia, Sweden... what's next?
