Players Linked to Wings for Deadline

I keep forgetting about him. Hes really seemed to have picked up his game now that Crosby has been out. Maybe its been the increased ice time?? Id really like to see Detroit make a pitch for him. Not at the price of Hudler - I dont think a free agent Malone would even fetch Hudler - but Malone is one player Id like to see Detoit pull out some stops for..

Why not give up Hudler if Pitt actually agreed to that though? Gives us something we need at the expense of something that will be replacable in our organization. Malone's value is going up though, and Hudler's down....so now i dont think Pitt would even want to do that. If they did, in my opinion its a must make.

I heard an Interview with Holland after the Kings game and Hollands #1 focus is getting a depth defensemen

He was asked if he were to do a big move or smaller ones at the deadline, no suprise Holland said small

My predictions for the deadline is:

Blake

Prospal

I'm betting Holland either goes for a blockbuster (Sundin or Hossa) or a second-tier guy who is signed for a few years. I doubt he's going for an older rental like Blake.

The reason I say not to give up Hudler for Malone is because Id rather see Hudler used as a package to land something bigger (Hossa, Blake, Sundin). But naturally, if we lost out on those type of guys, I personally wouldnt have a problem giving up Hudler for Malone...and maybe a pick since Hudler is re-signed cheaply and Malone is a UFA.

So, if Holland said he wants a defenseman, why did you automatically think of two left wingers?

I don't know how we could afford to sign Hossa who is making 6M this year and has made it clear that he intends to test the market.

I wonder if...

I know a couple seasons ago the Wings were looking to make a trade for Antropov. I doubt hes on the block for Toronto as hes fairly cheap and young and one of the few bright spots on Toronto this season, but you never know...

And as much as he has unerperfomed the last few seasons, if were looking at a guy like Martin Lapointe, I see no reason why we shouldnt go up a step and take a look at Mark Bell. Hes signed for next season, but on nhlnumbers.com, it says his cap hit is only 1.8M. The worst that could happen is he continues to slump, yet still brings size, physicality, and he drops the gloves. I could easily see him good for 15 goals, 40 points if he were on the Wings full time. And he might be a good option to replace Frazen, considering Franzen might test the market (especially when you think back to how tough it was to re-sign him last time).

Another not very talked about option for scoring is Radim Vrbata, although last I heard Phoenix wanted to lock him up, and that might be the case, consiering theyve played so well lately..

Other "off-the-radar" options: Martin Havlat - another year at 6M and is injury prone, but he can dominate the games he plays in and he is on the block in Chicago, rumored not to cost too much..

Jarrett Stoll - RFA after this season. Has underperformed but has good skill, is a great faceoff guy, and wouldnt cost much to re-sign after this season. Would be a pretty low-risk move.

Tim Connolly - another year at 2.9M. Oft-injured, but very skilled and a great skater. Still young, but I'm not sure his offensive output is enough to off-set his injury history. Similar situation to Havlat..

Kristian Huselius/Daymond Langkow/Alex Tanguay - Calgary would really have to go in the s***ter these next couple weeks for them to want to trade off any of these guys, especially to the Wings, but any of these guys IMO would be a great fit here..

Andrew Brunette - Don't know if the Avs would trade with us, but stranger things have happened. Brunette would be a good depth player, and he's had some clutch playoff moments in the past. Colorado is so deep up front that if Sakic/Stastny/Smyth come back before the deadline, he could be an option..

Bobby Holik - Hes having a decent year with Atlanta, and would be good for depth. Hes still a bulldog in the corners and definitely plays with a mean streak. Id definitely prefer him to Martin Lapointe at this point.

Brian Gionta - 1 more year at 4M. Wouldnt address the size/grit issue, but why not if he were brought in to replace/traded for Hudler. No loss of size there...Hes rumored to be on the block, which is why I put him here..i think he would thrive in Detroit, but other moves would still have to be made to address grit/size up front..

I would add Raffi Torres, but who knows how long hell be out with that knee injury. Id LOVE to see him come here in an off-season trade though.

I know a lot of these names seem far-fetched or really random, but that always seems to be the nature of Ken Holland's trades. Seems everyone thinks they know what he'll do, and then he goes off and trades for someone no one even thought of....

^^^Tim Connolly is a guy I've been hoping to come to the Wings for a long time, but after hearing about how bad his current injury is, I'm not sure it's a such a good idea. Because the injury was a mis-diagnosis by the Buffalo team doctors, Connolly will require hip surgery once the season is over, which would be a major inconvience to aquire someone who will have to go through that.

Still a great player though, and I'd like to someday see him in a Red Wing uniform. He needs to get healthy, though, before that happens.

Kindl and Ericsson are untouchables according to management.

I know Hossa will cost a lot. And Flip is also someone I would be willing to part with to get Hossa, who is better than both of them. But not BOTH Flip and Hudler.

Then we won't get him--simple as that.

I am pretty sure we can afford Hossa, especially if the cap goes up by $3million next year. Maybe we can sign and trade for Hossa so we can get him locked up in Hockeytown for 3-4 years.

I just wonder if we are going to keep or trade Cleary before the deadline.

Here's what Chelios had to say:

On the Red Wings going after Rob Blake:

“Will they? Obviously it’s got to be one of their guys that’s in their head. You hear the names, I think the biggest names I’ve heard are (Marion) Hossa, Blake, (Bobby) Holik is up —right now it looks like they’re trying to trade him—but it’s been quiet lately. It’s tough to comment on that because you don’t want to disrespect any of your teammates and you hate to see guys leave after the success we’ve had because everybody’s played a part this year and so if we can get the guys that you’re talking about without giving up players, hey, that’s great. We’ve got some room under the cap, we’ve got some money to spare so if we can get a guy for just money, that’s great and it will help our team.”

I see what you're saying, i think we just disagree on Hudler's trade value. Getting Malone to me is the best you could possibly do with Hudler. I dont see his name attracting any of the teams who might unload their big star like Hossa and Sundin. These teams are looking for at least one great young player in return...Hudler's not it. Jiri is likely to be the key figure for the Wings in any trade involving him. Meaning they arent going to add on a Kindl or Ericsson in any trade where they are giving him up. Its not their style anymore in the cap era. Theyre going to get easily outbid....which again is why i dont understand leaving 5 mill on the table to begin with. Anybody who's worth anything to them the Wings place the untouchable tag on them....how are you supposed to get a premier name without dealing those types of guys? It doesnt happen.

For the first time ever, I think I'm content and don't want to go out and get any more players. I realize we have gaps to fill, but I don't like the thought of letting Hudler or Flip or any other guy going (like some people have suggested here). We're tearing up the league with what we have and think we're just going to have to battle through the adversity in the playoffs. We might get pushed around a bit, but boy, do we make some good passes.

A guy not linked to the Wings (at least I don't think he is) should be Nikolai Zherdev Blue Jackets.

Often called a selfish player this guy has been lights out ever since being yelled at by Hitchcock. His defense and skating are among the best not to mention his passing. The Jackets are looking for defensive help as are the Wings. The Wings will get both a 2ond liner and a defesive player.

Zherdev's stats:

Some sources via TSN are stating that Jagr's time could be up in the Big Apple and that the likes

of Detroit could be the change of scenery to re-ignite the 36 yr old superstar. Not sure we could

afford him or for that matter whet he would cost us in a trade. Be worth watching if he does come

up any more in other trade debates.

After watching Jagr play a few times this year it leaves me scratching my as to why any GM would want this guy...Talk about no desire!

 on getting Jagr in a Red Wings jersey.

Yeah really..he is the epitome of somebody i dont ever want. I hate him. Although...the one positive i could forsee would be a pretty cool drinking game....a shot of Jager for every shot by Jagr. I'd need it too having to watch him play in a Wings uniform!

Well, after the Ducks Debacle what should we do?

Since Cleary is out, we need a scoring center/winger to work on the 2nd line and the 2nd PP unit. Hossa, Sundin, etc.

Also, with the extracurriculars at the end of the game, we need a real enforcers on the roster. Gratton, Neil, McGrattan; anyone who is big and can play the puck. A defenseman is the ideal choice.

Neil would be a dream, so thats not going to happen, and I doubt McGrattan would see much ice time, although that idea is starting to grow on me. I just dont see it happening either. Gratton is probably our best option, although he doesnt really strike fear in anyone, but Id welcome any of those guys here. What are our options for Dmen that can drop em??

Staois, Stuart, Erksine, O'Brien (though he'd cost a bit since he's a rally good d-man)
