dallas27 7 Report post Posted July 30, 2008 Wow why the hell did we trade Pudge? For Kyle freakin Farnsworth....we should have kept him in the first place. Are you aware of Farnsworth's stats? And the fact that Pudge is past his prime? I mean, I know a 3.65 era and 43 strike outs in 44 innings sucks...
redwings1914 18 Report post Posted July 30, 2008 Well it seems we might be leaning towards a firesale.......so I wouldn't be surprised if DD tried to package Renteria and Sheffield for a catching prospect. Dear god can we ever get a catching prospect........we haven't had a good one for over 20 years it seems.
Ozzie30 170 Report post Posted July 30, 2008 Some of the Pudge comments make it obvious hockey is a lot of our #1 sports. Back on point: I think it was a great move. Dave Dombrowski completely hosed the Yanks on this one. Sure, I'm thankful that Pudge took a shot with the Tigers, not to mention lured in Ordonez and started the turn around. But lets face it, he was past his prime. Sure, his batting average is nearly .300 again, but geez people, he couldn't even play every game anymore. Getting Farnsworth at this point is like trading Hasek for Stuart at the deadline? How many of you would make that deal?
wingfanatic4alltime 32 Report post Posted July 31, 2008 Well Ozzie30 i dont know if i would go that far that dombroski hosed the yankees but im one of the fans that isnt too upset about this trade. I dont believe dombroski is waving the white flag if that was the case i think he would have traded pudge for prospects. Also the yankees are going to win the wild card if they even make the playoffs where as i think we can all agree that its either the division or bust for our tigers. I really hope farnsworth spells the end for The Gas Can Jones

Agreed. No way this is a fire sale. DD traded for someone we need right now. I just wish we could have a do-over on the Renteria trade. Jair Jurrjens would sure look good in the rotation right now. mannysBETTER3434 1 Report post Posted July 31, 2008 I'm going to miss Pudge. Like BRTD said I hope Detroit treats him well when he returns. I have mixed feelings on the trade. I know he's passed his prime, and might have not re-signed, but this guy was the one who took a chance on the Tigers and turned the team around (not to mention went out with class when interviewed today). It's not like Pudge was a bum like Shef batting .225.

I hope its loud cheers and applause. He has earned it. Thank you Pudge for helping the Tigers earn their stripes again.

Agreed would have much rather sent Shef right back to NY - but nobody probably wants him. Pudge>>>>Shef on and off the baseball field. Time to move on I guess - good luck Pudge - well to you individually - can't wish luck on the Yanks....

Matt 1,049 Report post Posted July 31, 2008 Geez, after the Tigers came back last night and really showed some determination to win that game, it seemed like both clubs couldn't wait to give it away in the extra innings. Glad they came out of it, expecially after the B-12th they had. That Renteria trade has turned out to be brutal. I scream at the TV at every one of his at bats. He's worthless. ...And Farnsworth sounded like someone kicked his puppy when they interviewed him about the trade. He sounded thrilled...

GoWings1905 2,694 Report post Posted August 6, 2008 (edited) The Tigers are done. Everything the team did so well in 2006, they have gone completely away from the past two seasons. Dombrowski deserves tons of credit for the Pudge/Maggs signings and a great trade for Polanco, but he has messed up too much recently and the Tigers really have no future because of it. The Renteria trade was an epic failure. Jurrjens would sure be nice in the rotation right now. Sheffield has never done anything for the Tigers, except get hurt and not hit. Cabrera is a sensational player, so that portion of the deal worked out. However, losing both Maybin and Miller and getting nothing out of Willis hurts. The Tigers spent all kinds of money on offense, but ignored glaring weaknesses on defense, the starting pitching, and clearly the bullpen above all else. The Tigers are a below .500 baseball team since last July, and it's completely unacceptable. I'm a bit late on the Pudge trade because I have been gone, but are you serious? We traded a clubhouse leader, .295 hitter, and the best defensive catcher in baseball for a scrub reliever? Farnsworth is a joke. He'll fit in great with Rodney and Jones blowing games every night. The worst part of the trade: Brandon Inge is our frickin starting catcher. Nice .218 batting average there Brandon. No wonder no other team wanted the guy in the offseason. I hope Pudge gets a standing ovation when he comes back to Comerica with the Yankees. Thanks for the memories Pudge and for making the Tigers relevant again. It's a shame it had to end the way it did. Edited August 6, 2008 by GoWings1905

It's a shame it had to end the way it did. Pudge had a no-trade clause and could have very easily exercised it. He had a part in how the way it ended. But Pudge, being a smart man, knew that he has a better shot with the Yankees to make the playoffs. Pudge is also a free agent after this year, that of which the Tigers would most likely not sign. They get Farnsworth, who will help the bullpen, and have a shot at signing in the off-season. Especially if he keeps pitching the way he does. IF he kept pitching like he did in New York he is in the millions of dollars. But as of right now he'd be lucky to get one million. *edit* At least check out Farnsworth stats before you start to run your mouth about how much he sucks. But as of right now he'd be lucky to get one million. *edit* At least check out Farnsworth stats before you start to run your mouth about how much he sucks. Sure, Pudge played a role in the trade. He was pissed when Leyland decided to start splitting his playing time with a scrub like Inge. I don't blame him for wanting the hell out to go to a team where he can start every night. Farnsworth is a free agent at season's end too. I doubt Pudge would have been back next season, but who is to say Farnsworth will be or the Tigers will even want him back? The Tigers are not a better team now than they were a week ago. I've seen Farnsworth's stats. It doesn't bring Pudge back or the value he brought to the team, which far exceeded Farnsworth's. Why would you suggest re-signing Farnsworth for cheap if he keeps pitching the way he has so far in Detroit? Yes, let's fix our bullpen by keeping a guy that blows games in the same fashion as Jones and Rodney. That makes a ton of sense. Why would you reward a player for being counter-productive? Farnsworth hasn't pitched like he did with the Yankees, so it makes the trade even worse at this point. Farnsworth has been all hype in his career for throwing hard with minimal results. He has a 4.45 career ERA, has blown more saves than he actually saved (30-27). For the immediate bullpen help he was supposed to provide to the Tigers, well the stats don't lie. He's already blown two leads in three appearances, given up three homeruns, and played a major role in costing the Tigers two wins in the standings. It was a bad trade by Dombrowski, which is getting common lately. Edited August 7, 2008 by GoWings1905
