YoungGuns1340 1 Report post Posted February 16, 2008 Is it just because Flip is bigger than Hudler? Is that why everyone seems to think he should get a free pass? Sure hes got a decent defensive game, but that has been NOWHERE to be found the past couple weeks. Hudler has been crap lately this month too. Hes been worse. I understand that. But Im sick of people putting Filppula on some pedestal way up above Hudler...
YoungGuns1340 1 Report post Posted February 16, 2008 2nd line scoring has been an issue all season, in spite of what the "if it ain't broke don't fix it" camp said. Sammy has been a disappointment in the goals department, which doesn't help. And the Wings needed Flip and Hudler to step up in a big way. Things looked promising the first half of the season, but now headed into the playoffs, not so much. Though honestly if they're gonna slump, I'm glad they're going it now to expose the lack of secondary scoring, so hopefully Holland makes a move. I couldnt agree more. Ive been with you all season in saying we need to add some scoring, as Ive had a bit of a hunch all season long that our secondary offensive players have been overperforming, and would soon come back to earth. Particularly Flip, Sammy, Hudler, and Franzen. Ive actually started to buy into Clearys ability to be a top 6 forward, as he wouldve hit 25 goals on a full season, and probably 60 points - to me, thats what you expect from your 2nd line players.. In all honesty, I say do what it takes to land Hossa, even if that means Flip is going back...

But Im sick of people putting Filppula on some pedestal way up above Hudler... Not saying its right, But it happens because you can tell by the way Flipper plays he is going to be a good player in the nhl.. Hudler on the other hand, you cant see that nearly as much, So Huds gets the short end of the stick most the time.
Dawgs 0 Report post Posted February 16, 2008 I'll say this again. When did our string of bad play start? The moment Cleary was injured. This is hardly true. They lost 4 in a row, won 8 straight where they didnt play well at all, now lost 5 . They have been playing down to the competition for a month now. This streak is about more than one player or one line. Lidstrom and Datsyuk and Zetterberg are as much to blame as Hudler or Sammy. They look like they are stuck in the mud out there. They have stopped skating. They are unsure of themselves so miss the easy plays and when they try to make the hard plays they give up the puck. Last night I saw Lidstrom, top 5 defensemen EVER Lidstrom, on the same side of the ice as his defensive partner while a Blue Jacket player came in and scored one on the goalie from 5 feet in. This streak is way more than one player or one facet of the game. There are no quick fixes. This is a mental thing they are just going to have to fight thru together as a team. Im hoping the road trip does them some good.
GMRwings1983 8,804 Report post Posted February 16, 2008 Apparently Sandy McCarthy is making an NHL comeback... Lou, I know you'd like that... He was a joke towards the end of his career, and is too old to do anything as an enforcer anymore. He'd still be an upgrade over Kopecky, though.
Lou_Siffer 1 Report post Posted February 16, 2008 Apparently Sandy McCarthy is making an NHL comeback... Lou, I know you'd like that... The last memory I have of McCarthy is getting absolutely pummelled by Brashear....I'd like to keep it that way
Superman54 91 Report post Posted February 16, 2008 I really hope Huds can turn it around, and soon I love the guy but I think he has lost much confidence right now

That's the memory I'd like to keep of him.
Majsheppard 203 Report post Posted February 16, 2008 The only player who I consider true second line right now is perhaps Franzen, and by no means is that a constant. Fil needs to remain on the team, but Hudler most likely will be somewhere else at some point, so if he is traded for something that will help I won't complain. We have so much upside in the farm that I really don't mind trading some of our players as much as normally. Let us not totally get a new 2nd line as we all know it didn't work last year. I would have loved to get Stillman and Commadore and be done, but that excellent trade was all Ottawa. Now I wouldn't mind to see Prospal for Hudler.... and I am sure more other stuff to be named later.
Lou_Siffer 1 Report post Posted February 16, 2008 Hey, when he was in Calgary he was one of the most dominant fighters in the league who hardly ever lost. That's the memory I'd like to keep of him. Once he got off the roids though and lost all that weight, he went south really fast. In his prime though, he was definitely one hell of a fighter like you said. He was one of my favorites for sure, then just end up frustrating me more and more to the point i started to dislike him.

True, but if I gave that fact so much weight, then I'd have to say that Twist wasn't a great fighter either. I wish the Wings would give Franzen or Kopecky some roids, maybe we'd see a little more tougness out of them.
Dabura 12,232 Report post Posted February 16, 2008 Is it just because Flip is bigger than Hudler? Flip has the makings of a great playmaker. He made a big statement this past postseason. Guys like him are more valuable than the Jiri Hudlers of the world, especially to an organization like this one, which has absolutely no difficulty finding smallish, one-dimensional "goal-scorer" types. But like I said, they can both go on the block if it means getting Hossa.
Detroit # 1 Fan 2,204 Report post Posted February 16, 2008 (edited) He, Sammy and Kopecky gotta go. Throw the bus at Hossa or Sundin, and get GRATTON. Hudler is too small to have sucess, he doesnt have the talent or the passion of a Cliff Ronning or Marty St Louis to be sucessful. Sammy, you know the story. Kopecky, this guy will do NOTHING in Detroit, trade him somewhere else (Tampa Bay ) and get a chance. Edit: Filpula needs to smarten up and start doing something. People try to tell me this guy is good defensively, dont see it. He works hard, that's about it. BTW, this just goes to show how important Cleary is. 20 goals, 40 points, great PKer, stands in front of the net on the PP, you can say what you want, but he IS important. I guess you could say my dislike for McCarthy was a result of him having stopped using them! For the record, i wouldnt hold that against Twist either, or any fighters who used roids. I think in my era of being a fan McCarthy is without a doubt one of the best based off what he was in his prime. He's top 5 for the 90's for sure imo. Speaking of roids, I dont know if Peters is off now, but he needs to get back on if he is. He hasnt been doing jack s***...

You mean cocking you right hand back the whole fight and making stupid faces isn't doing something? Seriously, Peters has become a joke. The greatest thing he's ever done is fight Emery, and get KO'd by Matt Johnson. That's how I'll always remember Peters until he does something differently. miller76 463 Report post Posted February 17, 2008 (edited) Jiri Hudler... no goals in 13 games. I'm sorry, but as somebody that's supposed to be picking up the slack for secondary scoring, this guy has been totally invisable the past month. If he's not going to score goals, he's extremely useless on this team, because he brings no other physical elements to the table. Before the anti-complain posters attack me for expecting Hudler to be "the next Steve Yzerman", please consider that a good team shouldn't have to rely souly on the 1st line for scoring. I'm not expecting Hudler to score 50 goals and 150 points, but I do expect him to produce more than what he's shown currently. The Wings need secondary scoring, badly, and since I don't expect Holland to make a big splash at the deadline, it needs to start coming from what they already have. Agree, or disagree? I hate to say this, but I agree that our secondary scoring is not there. What happens if Datsyuk goes down, and Z's back can't hang? Cleary isn't here. Hudler, Flip, Kopecky, Sammy were the players designed to step up, and their not. If I was Babcock, I would start charging these players front row ticket prices, until they step up and produce. Because as of right now, they are spectators! Edited February 17, 2008 by miller76
