Let's not be silly about this. Advocating running Sakic is absurd. If you want to complain about lack of respect for Lidstrom and advocate running Sakic we have a word for that, "hypocrite". I'd love to see our old rivalry but we don't need to resort to pure thuggery. I'd settle for another sound whupping for Laperriere.

And lets leave Steve Moore out of this. We don't need to rehash that hit or what came after for the millionth time.

Apparently the divelanche and their fans do if they're going to run a team's skilled players and then cheer when they get injured. A litttle taste of their own medicine might make them think twice before they do it again. No one cares if Lappy gets beat up, they can always find 20 others like him. There's only 1 Sakic and Lidstrom to go around for each team.

I agree with everything you just said. Sakic is one of the few Avs that I like and respect. On the topic of the rivalry, I thought yesterday could be the spark that starts up the rivalry again, but only if we do face them in the playoffs. I really hope it happens too because that way the Wings could be 8-0 against the Avs.

Besides Sakic and Hejduk, there's not much in Denver to even care about. Nothing to hate there, the Avs no match for the Wings when everyone is healthy.

As for Lapierre, his actions don't represent the team, at least not in my opinion. He's alone in his intention to run Lids, if that's what he meant to do. Stupid hit, but maybe not with intent to injure - that was the result, however, and I am glad Downey made a statement for more than one reason.

I expect that every member of the Avs team has nothing but respect for Lidstrom.

Now, Pronger I can hate, and his team by association. He intended to take Homer out last playoffs. He's a dead man to me. They approved and so the Ducks are dead, too.

Lapierre's just lucky Wings don't play the Avs again this season.

I want to see Edm vs Vanc in the playoffs .

I would fear an Ana vs Det matchup alot more than a Det vs Col matchup in the playoffs, which tells me that Anaheim is right now the bigger rival. I don't hate anyone else on Colorado other than Laparierre...and I couldn't stand him when he played for the Kings either. Love to have him on my team though.

There's no way this is anything like the rivalry. Granted, it's fun to watch a game just knowing about the old rivalry, but that one ensued as long as it did because the two teams kept meeting in the playoffs! Right now I think Anaheim is a bigger rival, but only because the fans really don't care for each other too much. It's an interesting thing to think about, but to me it would be just as likely to start a rivalry with any team with what you're saying....if say someone on St. Louis hurt Lidstrom and Downey went after them...would everyone be saying this?

The "it's ok for us but not for them" attitude is part and parcel of the general lack of respect that led to this hit on Nick. There was a lot of debate about that other incident and certainly no clear consensus that the hit on Naslund was dirty (which is all I'm saying about that). This is about not contributing to the cycle of disrespect just because it makes you feel better for a few minutes.

Unfortunately, I don't think the rivalry is renewed. There's just no bad blood between the players. After the game Laperierre didn't smack talk Downey or defend what he did. He said he respected what Downey did and probably would have done the same in his shoes.

This isn't exactly the stuff of legend, though it was nice to see. I just don't see this game having any long-term effects on the dead rivalry.

Stop cheapening what was the greatest rivalry in sports in the last 20 years or maybe more. What made it great is that both teams were unbelievably talented and were the best teams in the game of that era (and maybe any era). When they played there was no doubt championships would be determined. ONE OR THE OTHER WAS PRETTY MUCH GOING TO WIN THE CUP. What made that rivalry was the best ******* hockey you could ever ask for. This is not even close. Please, quit acting like a bunch of excited little ***** school girls, have some God Damn respect and quit calling any stupid little tussle anything close to THE rivalry.

DISCLAIMER: No I'm not trying to advocate being a coward and not playing a physical game.

There's absolutely no need to just start crap though in a game for the sake of starting it. That includes taking runs at people, especially star players/players that are well-respected throughout the league.

I'm guessing you forgot he's been injured.

He had 17 goals, 32 assists and was +11. That's 49 points in 46 games played.

And the kid's only 22 in his 2nd season in the NHL.

The Avs definitely miss him.

I know. I realize that is not everyone's feelings. The remark was just a little upsetting... Sakic and Lidstrom are two of the classiest guys in the league... I would hate to see anything happen to either of them. With Sakic missing most of this season I realize just how lucky we are to have someone like him on the team... I just hope that Stastny can step up and lead the team after Sakic retires.

Would be nice if we could renew this rivalry - but it's a long way off. Right now the Avs are a very mediocre to bad team. I see no way they make the playoffs, but I'm hoping for the Wings sake they slide into the 8th spot. Even with Sakic and Stasny coming back soon (supposedly - and both after major surgeries) I see no way that markedly improves a team with just too many weaknesses.

I had the misfortune of being at both the game vs. Vancouver when they ran Marcus Nasland and last night's game when they ran Nick. And yes they are total hypocrites because not a one of them gives a rat's a$$ when it's the other team's elite players getting hurt (although as much as I dislike Laperriere he did admit he would be really POd if that happened to one of their players). They're still sore (albeit with good reason) about the Moore hit - but they just don't see the other side of the coin.

For example, I saw a few guys with Lemieux jerseys at the game last night - one of the dirtiest jerks to ever play the game, but if I walked in with a Bertuzzi jersey I'm sure I'd get some liquids dumped on me....

Yea, you're right, I was a little nasty, but as for this comparing to the real rivalry, it's just ridiculous. The Avs-Wings rivalry was based on amazing hockey between two teams that won 5 Cups in about 7 years. There was true hatred, heroes and villains and the best and most intense hockey some of us may ever see. Every fan in hockey knew it was all about Colorado and Detroit. Russian Five, Roy, Yzerman, Lemeiux, McCarty... there is NOTHING even close to this now. If supposed fans don't understand what it is we lived through and now call any little check or hit anything close to "the rivalry" they will never know how lucky they were to be a fan of one of these teams when the rivalry was real. It's like comparing our strained relations with Venezuela with the Cold War. Not even close.

Beautiful analogy there. I totally agree. The rivalry was one of the greatest (in my opinion, being a biased hockey fan, THE greatest) events in all sports history. We'll never see anything quite like it again.

In the meantime I can enjoy the rivalry with Anaheim.

I sincerely believe that Lappy didn't intend to hurt Lidstrom, but he did... and there's nothing he can do to take that back. I think that Lemieux was more the type of player that didn't give a $hit about who he hurt... but I like to think that Laperriere is a better player/person than that. Again, I would like to reitterate that I am NOT trying to defend lappy... I just watch him play every game and he just seems like a good guy.

i honestly feel that the rivalry could come back is if the avs get into the playoffs and knock us out. there will always be a deep hatred for the avs. i do agree though at this point and time that the ducks are our biggest rival.

Yeah, you're right... there are still plenty of people who chant "red wings suck" at the games... which really pisses me off because it shows a total lack of respect for the team. I will not boo the wings (especially since I have my wings fan husband next to me, lol) It just really irritates me because when people say things like the red wings suck... I feel like asking them "are you blind? have you even looked at the standings lately? They obviously don't suck!"

It's really tough seeing the avs go through these tough times, but I hope they can keep improving and once again become an elite team.
