Hossa Sweepstakes down to four teams?

Rate this topic

Part of the confusion is that people are citing or exaggerating events and reports, all the rumors from different sources, different dates, and leaving out key information.

So basically, no matter what anyone says, no one has ANY idea, not even with hints, where Hossa is going. All of it has been contradicted, countered, or torn apart so far.

Curious... does anyone have a direct quote from hossa saying that he definately wants to be on a team competing for the cup this year (aka would be willing to take the price cut everyone wants)? I know at least a half dozen people have said he's looking for that. However, I have read this entire dictionary of a thread, and don't remember there ever being a direct quote along this line.

I wanna see hossa on our team...

Pass on Hossa, and go after Sundin. I think Sundin is more the type of player we need. Mats has size, Hossa is the same size as Datsyuk and Zetterberg. You need size in the playoffs, so I'm hoping for Sundin, McCarty, and keeping Ericsson on the team.

Hossa is 6'1" 210 pounds and uses his size. He's not as big as Sundin, but he's definitely bigger than Zetterberg and Datsyuk.

Go to spectorshockey.net. Spectors got a nice little search engine where you can search through the archived rumors. You'll find plenty of info related to Hossa's potential trade. Just make sure its not outdated.. :hehe:

The sad thing right now for the Red Wings is all of our potential trade bait (Filppula, Hudler, Kopecky, Franzen) are performing awful at the moment. If prospects like Ericsson, Kindl, and Howard are really "untouchables", what does Detroit have to offer that would entice teams enough for players like Sundin/Hossa that have high price tags?

I want Hossa here more than anything on Tuesday, but I am not sure Ken Holland can put the best offer on the table to Atlanta. Something has to give if the Red Wings want to make a serious run in the playoffs.

oh man.. this guy is going to command insane price now. Is it really gonna be worth it to get him?

I don't think the price will be "insane." As people ahve noted, only a few teams were ever in the running for Hossa and that hasn't changed much. I mean, the price can only go so high. It's not salary for re-signing that concerns me, but prospects, and frankly, out of the teams that are in the running and what they are willign to offer, I feel Detroit has the edge.

That being said, I don't think we get Hossa. But so long as no one in the West gets him, I'm fine with it.

I'll state the same thing here that I did in the other topic...

Hossa's price will not change, because he has already been traded or won't be till summer. Atl GM stated numerous times that there would be a 48hr window for hossa to sign after he approves the trade.

Yeah but what makes you think Hossa will sign with the team Waddell approves the trade for? Youve got things a little backwards. Team makes an offer. If Wadell likes the offer, he gives said team time to negotiate with Hossa. IF the negotiation goes well and a contract is put into place, THEN Hossa will be traded.

Yes... that is what I'm saying... the hossa deal may not be finalized, but the bidding on hossa should be completed by now according to what he has said. Hossa may say no to the team, but that at this point in effect means ATL got screwed outta a deal. They aren't going to re-neg a deal once it's been agreed to just because of sundin.

Edit: also the idea that all the teams (what like 7 have been quoted) going after sundin would have been waiting to hear on him is ridiculous! Most likely only 1 or 2 were close enough in negotiation to be waiting on his reply, and the others had already moved on.

No we wont be getting him, we will be lucky if we end up with Federov. Wouldn't be surprised if we end up with mccarty and a cory cross type depth d man. And we will ultimately lose within the first 3 rds of the playoffs, failing to make it past the western conference finals despite our AWESOME regular season record yet again. But everyone who just LOVES Flip will be able to sleep tight, jesus. When is the whole Kenny Holland mystique wear off, I mean out last Stanley Cup finals was a while ago, hell, we couldn't even make it to the WCF to last year, which, well, we all know how that ended. whatever, agree or disagree, it doesn't really matter. just another F*CKING BALLS TO THE WALL regular season. at least Hit keeps the fans coming.... wait, no it doesn't do that either. shucks, I'm out.

 wow, people, take a chill pill and sleep it off. its not even march yet and you guys are packing it in. "It aint over til its over"

Ya I know but when it happens year after year it gets to the point where it is semi predictable. I mean I pray to god I am wrong, I will literally eat a crow if I am. No joke, fiune me one and I will scarf it down with a smile on my face. I just don't see it happening.

My worry button has been pressed with the whole secondary scoring issue now. I can't see any players that can help us that are not named Marion Hossa. Prospal, Fedorov, Satan, and Jagr are nice names to throw around; but a solution they are not.

At this point, I would give ATL Hudler, Flip, and Sammy (that's right, the entire second line) with a pick or prospect to get Hossa. We have Downey to keep a spot and we can pick up some depth guys from lower teams with picks and prospects. Just get Hossa, and then solve the other problems.

But Montreal and Ottawa apparently have a better shot than we do.

I can see Montreal, but not Ottawa. Ottawa and Hossa have a rocky past and there's little to no chance they could sign him beyond this season with Spezza, Heatley, and Fisher's new contracts kicking in.

Montreal has the cap space to do it but can they offer a better return than the Wings? Other than Ryder, I'd say they want to retain their young NHL-ready guys. The Wings are probably less reluctant to keep Filppula, as scoring has become a serious issue and Filppula isn't helping at all lately. Plus, the Habs are in the Eastern Conference.

Higgins is rumoured to be on the block if it's for Hossa. Plus the Canadians have a pretty deep pool of young talent sitting around.

Gainey was just quoted not even two days ago that Montreal fans "didnt have to worry about Chris Higgins being traded".

As for all this, "Montreal and Ottawa are in the running for Hossa" pieces, they´re also claiming things like "Detroit is interested in Brian Campbell".

Yes, lets please ignore the fact that it is not logical in ANY way for Detroit to want Campbell. A smallish, offenisve Dmen with little defensive awareness who would be a rental if not re-signed to the 6M plus contract he wants. NONE of that makes sense, so lets not trust every rumor that gets pumped out of the rumor mill..

Gainey wants to add top-line talent

TheFourthPeriod.com

It's no secret the Canadiens are trying to acquire a first-line goal-scorer before tomorrow's 3pm ET trade deadline, reports Montreal's La Presse.

The main focus of the Habs and GM Bob Gainey is Atlanta Thrashers sniper Marian Hossa.

Thrashers GM Don Waddell watched the Canadiens' AHL affiliate, the Hamilton Bulldogs, face off against the Toronto Marlies on Sunday, there to scout some of Montreal's top young talent.

The Thrashers are believed to be asking for an NHL-proven player, a top prospect and a high draft pick, most likely a first-round pick, in exchange for Hossa.

Rumors suggest the Canadiens are willing to move such players as Chris Higgins, Michael Ryder, Mathieu Dandenault, Mikhail Grabovski, Kyle Chipchura and some of their top prospects.

According to Le Journal de Montreal, the Canadiens will be neck in neck with the Ottawa Senators for Hossa's services.

The Senators are believed to be dangling such players as Antoine Vermette, Nick Foglino and Andrej Meszaros.

Le Journal claims the Thrashers may also be looking at Canadiens prospects Matt D'Agostini, Mathieu Carle and Pavel Valentenko.

The Canadiens are also in the running for such players as Calgary's Alex Tanguay, Tampa Bay's Vaclav Prospal, Chicago's Martin Havlat and Edmonton's Jarret Stoll.

What do you think about Stoll? I can see Satan or Lapointe coming here... but would like to have Stoll or T. Ruutu... + one big stay at home DEF...

Hell no. Filppula is one thing. Ericsson is not going anywhere. That would be stupid.

Why would it be stupid? Hossa is everything you hope Filpulla turns out to be. He's in his prime and if Detroit does pull this off they're going to sign him long term.

The only potential problem you run in to is the salary cap. Zetterberg and Hossa are each gonna demand contracts around 8 million/year for at least 5 years. That's not too realistic. Then again, wanting to trade for Hossa isn't very realistic either.

More than anything Detroit needs a depth player with power forward potential. I'd be willing to bet that the trade Darcy Tucker rejected a few days ago was to Detroit.

Now Holland should focus on landing Jackman from the Blues, Prospal from the Lightning or a Mike Knuble type player.
