Holland to offer McCarty a contract?

I saw him the day after he got his trick in his GR home debut. He didnt look bad when I saw him, he got in a fight, and the crowd was really good in giving him ovations, but the game I went to, he didnt factor in the scoring at all. last I checked, he has 4 goals and 3 assists in 6 games

so are we all expecting a grind liner to put up 1st or second line numbers? for mac 4 goals and 3 assists in 6 games sounds good to me even though its with the griffs

yes lou we know you don't want him on the team.

For me the problem lies in if theyre wanting to add another grinding, physical guy,...then theres much better options out there for that imo. Its certainly not that i dislike McCarty, but also the notion that Downey should be removed from his enforcer role for him is pretty ridiculous i think and irks me a bit. For what its worth, obviously id rather have him here than someone like Hartigan though...

Judging by the Ellis situation, I doubt McCarty will really replace Downey. He'll more than likely just switch in and out of the lineup with him for different games. Or, if say in a game like against St. Louis or somebody, he and Downey might play at the same time.

It really doesn't matter either way, because you and I both know neither Downey nor McCarty will be getting a sniff of ice time in the playoffs. For whatever reason the Wings plan on signing McCarty, which I'm pretty surprised at, because I doubt Babcock will play him at all in the playoffs.

Eh, I thought this was a bad idea at first. But now I am opening up to it. I think he could be the guy that gives the team that extra little spark in the locker room and energizes the crowd. I'm sure he won't cost a lot, so it's very low risk.

He's also basically at the same level of play as Ryno, from skimming the stats. I'm really thinking McCarty can make something happen here.

I agree. The Wings have been so good the last 5 years, they have played on skill and talent and systems, but hockey is also a game of emotion and the playoffs exemplify that fact. McCarty can bring the emotion that has been missing, the intangibles. (Schinderella schtory, 5th hole, par 5...itsh in the hole!)

I agree. I think he will add some spark to the team. He's one of those guys that feeds off the pressure and intimidation and gets better from it. Plus, he's played with Kiprusoff and knows how he plays if we should play Calgary in the playoffs.

Ya mean Edmonton has a spring season

I thought it was winter - then 1 month of "summer" - then winter again

I know, pathetic isn't it? Actually we call it 'Reading Week' here at the U of A because it really isn't spring at all.

And for the record we have two months of summer, then winter again.

McCarty wanted his life back in order

by The Grand Rapids Press

Friday February 22, 2008, 3:30 PM

T.J. Hamilton/The Grand Rapids PressDarren McCarty says he's still awaiting official word from the Detroit Red Wings on a contract.

Grand Rapids Griffins right wing Darren McCarty joined Bill Simonson on "The Huge Show" on Thursday to talk about McCarty's attempt to return to the NHL, likely with the Detroit Red Wings.

"In the beginning, it was just about getting back on the ice," McCarty said. "As I was progressing and feeling better and things started coming back to me, I definitely thought there was a legit chance (a comeback to the NHL) would be possible.

"I needed to get my life in order to be the person that I want to be and the father that I want to be."

Red Wings coach Mike Babock told Simonson on Wednesday that he plans to sign McCarty.

"To hear them talk about that is obviously something I look forward to," McCarty said.

I agree he's more like "insurance" at a low cost. I doubt he would be a regular in the lineup UNLESS we have an injury - especially in the playoffs. Personally, for me I'm a little worried since I love Mac's legacy. Having him return and flop would be painful. You have to wonder if he can contribute at (near) 36. He's also been tough on his body - two rehab trips. Can he even fight if needed? Not that it wouldn't be a great story - just too many ifs. If we were to take on a former Wing, I guess I'd rather see Fedorov - I think he would make a bigger impact in the playoffs.

He's already sorta flopped the ending to his career the first time.....
