NHL vs. NBA attendance

Rate this topic

Recommended Posts

Hey, I'm happy that the NHL has better attendance than the NBA but I will not tolerate any Pistons bashing. I support ALL Detroit sports, Lions included *sobs*. Sadly this in NO WAY means hockey is more popular than basketball. Pro basketball may not be well attended but lets not kid ourselves, this month is March Madness, all we will be hearing about is basketball, basketball and more basketball. Everybody and their mom follows college basketball. I was even on HFboards and just found out that Canada of all places knows about March Madness. Why Canada cares about US college basketball I don't understand, but that just goes to show you how big it is.

I'm from Canada and I love March Madness. It completes my March. Screw March break... it takes me away from my television creating a huge conflict between my spare time, and my college basketball.

Although, I am from Windsor which happens to be the closest city to Detroit, which is a HUGE basketball city... and like 90% of my family went to university in the states because the sports there are ridiculous (good).

So yeah, I love the Pistons as well (to back you up) and go Spaaaaaaaaaartans.

Sorry, but what is March madness? My mom follows hockey. I hate basketball... :puke:

Wow, that's a surprising stat. Wonder if it has anything to do with the fact that all but 5 teams in one of the conferences are above .500. That's how I lost interest in watching the Pistons and attending their games. It's turned into a joke following the regular season and come playoff time....well....I choose exciting, grind it out, fast paced action over game after game of fans and players yelling at referees at the end of the 4th quarter, which is usually sequence after sequence of foul shots.

Viva Hockey!

Basketball is hockey without ice, goalies, or sticks... there's not as much skill required in the base of the game itself (don't take that as me saying basketball players are not as skilled as hockey players). I lost interest in basketball about 15 years ago when Rodman left Detroit.

That won't last long. Look at the new arena they are getting!

The Lighthouse

Come on Illitches! Let's get an arena that revolutionizes Detroit!!

That place is going to suck in winter.

Heh- I'm a Canadian university student and I hear about March Madness over here :P

We share media and let's be honest- sports fans are sports fans. March Madness is an excuse to share a beer (with decent alcohol content in our case :D ) and hang out with the guys while betting against your buddies.

I just with more Americans appreciated Lacross!

How so?

Looks to me like they got their $hit together on this...With real estate prices shooting thru the roof on Long Island - it's a smart way to keep costs down by renovating the existing Coliseum...This IMO is something Ilitch should look into if he, & that a$$hat of a Mayor Kilpatrick cannot work out an agreement.

I agree dude. I like the idea of keeping the classic arenas around. The Joe has become something of a hallowed place in the last 20 years. This arena is the symbol of the amazing success Yzerman's Wings achieved, and rightly so. I say it's better to renovate and expand it ala the Light House posted earlier in this thread.

Look at the video on the website... the setup would be horrible w/ the snow they get...

Edit: I'm talking about the whole renovation... not the arena itself.

Ohhh. I'm concerned with the concept and its application to Detroit. I like the idea of renovating and expanding classic arenas like the Coliseum (home of the amazing Islander team of the early 80's) and the Joe.

NHL average attendance per game in 2007-08: 17,147

NBA average attendance per game in 2007-08: 17,141

Hockey is winning by 6 fans per game! (Winter Classic probably helped)

Also, we rag on Phoenix and Nashville for low attendance, but the NBA has 6 teams under 14,000 in attendance per game, while the NHL only has one. Somehow we never hear about those numbers, just that the NHL is struggling in Southern markets so much.

link please

Here are last year's numbers:

yeah, the last 5 minutes of a b-ball game takes a half hour with the 200 timeouts the teams have each game.

1 time out... use it wisely. If you are down by 23, you had better get scoring cuz that clock wont stop. suck it up and get it done on the floor. Don't call 6 full time outs, 1 20-second per half, just get it done. argh, I hate basketball.

I can't say I'm a fan of a sport that has way overpaid athletes running back and forth in squeaky tennis shoes. Not to say I hate basketball, it just seems to be the sport that produces the most whining.

This article p'd me off. it says Hockey has it's own country, Doesn't basketball...the U.S.?

That would be cool if Joe Louis did something like that. Cobo is a dump and needs to be teared down and rebuilt for more space and a modern look inside. That would free up space along the river to add more attractive stuff to the riverfront that could connect to the Joe for the Fall and Spring season of Hockey. Then when Hockey is over during the Summer time it would be a big hit with all crowds.

That's three words

Well NBA is really an acronym ( i think that is it) so the two words could be f*** & The. Then again f*** is also an acronym of sorts so maybe it is just one word......the.....

That Lighthouse, is it being built for sure???

Because that is amazing.

It reminds me of the fantasy concept I drew up for a new JLA.

The major difference is there would be four towers two short and two tall with the two short facing the Detroit River. Also the roof would be clear and the top back rows where the top camera is could look out and see the river/Canada

the towers closest to the river would have rooftop bars that would keep people there before and after the game and a hotel as well. The other two towers would be mostly condos and such.

2007-08 NHL Attendance

2007-08 NBA Attendance

BTW-Love Spartan Basketball, not a basketball hater. The NBA is the lowest form and least entertaining basketball played on Earth. Walk the ball up the court, dribble, dribble, dribble, post up, post up, run the shot clock to 3, draw a foul. Wow, that's great.

At least we found all the "missing" Red Wings fans. They're all at the other rinks, not JLA. Detroit has the second highest average away attendance (with 4 Central Division teams in the bottom 10 for attendance). Pittsburgh is the only team that is higher, but I wouldn't necessarily attribute that to Crosby, the Winter Classic attendance probably bolstered their numbers, I'd be willing to bet that the Wings would beat them if you take out the Winter Classic.

On the whole racism issue...that argument doesn't really work because it doesn't explain football. I would also argue that it is hockey's biggest obstacle in becoming anything other than a niche sport in the US.
