Reds4Life 51 Report post Posted March 4, 2008 The sides have agreed on the length of the contract -- five years. But they're still negotiating the salary. Full story
BeeRYCE 2 Report post Posted March 4, 2008 His new deal is likely to be worth between $2.5 million and $3 million. Can't say I'm angry about this. I like. There were rumours that he would earn Patrick Sharp type money at 3.9M, but hopefully that will not be the case.

Drake_Marcus 890 Report post Posted March 4, 2008 (edited) YES! Cleary's easily one of the top 5 most important members of this team. He was easily up there with Dats and Z in terms of how crucial he was to the Wings success last post season and he single-handedly turned broke Calgary's back with his clutch goals (including the penalty shot) and his abrasive play. Hopefully the Wings can convince him to take 3 million or less, even if it means signing him to another year on the deal. With guys like him it's often possible to drop the yearly pay a bit in exchange for more job security. Edited March 4, 2008 by Drake_Marcus
NeverForgetMac25 483 Report post Posted March 4, 2008 The nice thing about the five year term is it should make the cap hit more reasonable. No complaint from me.

edicius 3,269 Report post Posted March 4, 2008 Five years sounds great to me. And the reported salary of $2.5 - $3M doesn't bother me one bit. He's worth it.
Lidsyukerberg 0 Report post Posted March 4, 2008 (edited) Cleary - "I'll take the deal but Psycho Sammy isn't going to be popping shots off at me in the crease any more is he?" Just kidding, but it would be funny if he did say that. I think this rocks, I like his energy on the ice. My wife and son will be happy too, they like him as well. rick zombo 3,739 Report post Posted March 4, 2008 Also noted from this article Holland is also talking with the agent for defenseman Andreas Lilja, whom the club hopes to sign to a two-year deal. Not sure I like this one. I was hoping there would be more room for the young guys (Ericsson, Meech, etc.)
NeverForgetMac25 483 Report post Posted March 4, 2008 Also noted from this article Not sure I like this one. I was hoping there would be more room for the young guys (Ericsson, Meech, etc.) For the salary Lilja draws and the role he's *supposed* to play on the team (5-6 Dman, PK'er, Shot Blocker), he's a great fit. I don't mind re-signing Lilja at all for his current contract ($1 million) or little less.

NeverForgetMac25 483 Report post Posted March 4, 2008 (edited) I do! Let's hope they don't re-sign Lilly or the young kids will never get a chance Go Cleary - get it signed! Keep in mind that Stuart probably won't re-sign with Detroit, meaning the Wings only have Lids, Raf, Kronwall and Lebda locked in for next year. That leaves two spots open and possibly 3 depending on Lebda's play from here on out. There is nothing wrong with Lilja in the 5-6 role, especially for $1 million or less.
