Matt 1,049 Report post Posted March 6, 2008 Listen guys (and gals), most of you know I've opted for years not to activate a curse word filter here on the message forums. This is mainly because I believe that the vast majority of the members here know how to conduct themselves and realize that, if you're going to curse, there's a time and a place for it. However, over the last several weeks it has begun to get out of hand. If you take a look at the Forum Guidelines (required reading for everyone here), it clearly states that I don't mind it, but if it gets excessive it'll result in the filter getting activated along with suspensions for the worst offenders. So, please -- clean up the posts. I don't mind cursing with the situation dictates it (everyone needs to vent, and this place is as good as any to do it) -- but do it in moderation if you need to do it at all. No one-word curse posts, no posts consisting of just cursing, no derogatory slang terms, etc.. Thanks!

Turkey 0 Report post Posted March 6, 2008 Thanks Matt, LGW has always been a pretty classy place as far as internet forums go. Good to see we'll be trying to keep it that way.
GoCryWolfe 0 Report post Posted March 6, 2008 Don't worry, once Lilja leaves town, the collective cursing of Wings fans everywhere will simmer down. Hopefully this happens this summer. Come on, Stewie!
Drake_Marcus 890 Report post Posted March 6, 2008 I just want to pipe in on this really quick: Far too many posters here use "***", "***" and "homo" to describe players they don't like. This is no better than saying someone "jewed you"- it's stupid and childish at best (and bigotry at worst). Using these words as insults just makes the entire forums look bad and reflects poorly on all of us. Sorry to sound preachy but this is a pet-peeve of mine because it's one of the last venues of "socially accepted bigotry". Honestly- it's no different than being racist in the 50's. commadore183 103 Report post Posted March 6, 2008 I'm certainly guilty of this. I normally don't curse a lot, but sometimes I get worked up, leading to a string of curses (and, occasionally, a new word, such as in the SJ game, I think ) I'll keep a better hold on my language. Actually I've never sworn on here until just the other day in the thread you started regarding the GWG off the netting. I noticed your F-bomb and thought, oh it must be ok to occasionally emphaize your point. So I followed suit. I certainly understand the sensitivity towards others, I also understand the fact that this isn't an age specific site. I will go back to occasionally cursing with "*". Thanks Matt, you and your site are F**King awesome!!!
KDDRWINGS1 9 Report post Posted March 7, 2008 (edited) I agree 100% with everybody on LGW, I hope I haven't hurt anyones feelings by expressing my own, personal thoughts and exercising the right to free speech or by disagreeing with them. I know this isn't my website and there are rules to play every game so hopefully I can abide. It's impotant for everyone to remeber how sensitive people are today. I hope we can all be tolerant to all ethnicities, religions and the heteroly challenged members. It's funny how hockey is supposed to be the toughest sport but someones words can destroy a person. When people preach tolerance, it's mostly about their personal situation, but what about the person their preaching to, where's the tolerance to let their words be heard? This is a message board for a very intense sport with the most fervent and loyal fans, sometimes words can't describe the passion felt by a fan and sometimes words can but they take on different meanings to different people. Hopefully, as most of us do, when we read another members thoughts, we remember that that person is just as anonymous as you and just as opinionated. I do think this a great site and has a lot of great members, I just bums me out when people take away from the thread topic to express their non-hockey related feelings. There's one sheriff on this website who does a darn good job, so stop playing police and start talking hockey. Edited March 7, 2008 by KDDRWINGS1

Sorry to sound preachy but this is a pet-peeve of mine because it's one of the last venues of "socially accepted bigotry". Honestly- it's no different than being racist in the 50's. I agree that those words are overused. I've got a possible reason why the word *** is overused though. I'm a teacher in a middle school and this past year or so, we have noticed a tremendous increase in the word "***" in the hallways by students. Recently a student used the word in my class while referring to a book we were reading. I pulled her into the hallway and asked her to define the word "***". She told me that it means "stupid". I explained that it was inappropriate, blah blah blah. My point is, I think we may be seeing one of those times when the meaning of a word changes. For example, *** used to mean happy, then it switched to meaning homosexual, and now it appears to be changing again. I think the word "***" originally meant "cigarette" and so on. Now, in terms of the abundant swearing. Some of the threads lately have sounded like a bunch of teenagers were typing them. I admit, I swear occasionally, but it's usually justified (for example the goalie interference call on homer during the ducks game or the "off the net" goal against the sharks). j/k I realize it's wrong, though, and that kids are probably reading these posts. I wouldn't want my kids to see some of the stuff being said on here and I'm sure those with kids would agree with me. I'll clean up my language and I hope others do the same.
