Wings_Rule_1010 4 Report post Posted March 12, 2008 This is the best news I have heard all week. Went to the game, listened to the post game and heard about the deal. Have liked him since his first training camp and am definitely glad to see he is going to be here for 5 years.
IceMunkee 15 Report post Posted March 12, 2008 You're on crack if you think that Franzen will be a 4th-line player next season. The same probably goes for Kopecky, who is improving daily. I agree Crym. Kopecky has been playing very well and takes some big hits and keeps coming. Franz has been impressive to. I think that Kop could take Huds or Sammies spot. I really like Kopecky and was happy to see him get some playing time with Datsyuk tonight, but he will not be replacing those 2 guys next year. He is a different type of player. I don't think anyone thinks that Thomas can replace both Sammy AND Hudler. But one of them? Quite possible. Hudler has 12G playing a top six role for more than half a season. Kopecky's 4 goals, for sure, turn in to at least 10-15 next year, if he gets Hudler's minutes and line mates. And Sammy's 1.2M salary can get replaced by Kopecky's 525k salary any day, if it means freeing up the cap space to sign a legit top six winger like say Brian Rolston. edit to add: good deal for both Cleary and the DRWs by the way..... cirov19 1 Report post Posted March 12, 2008 Five years of Cleary should be awesome! I'm so happy with the Wings and Cleary right now... Anybody think he's going to end up as an Alternate within the next five?
Nev 1,085 Report post Posted March 12, 2008 Anybody think he's going to end up as an Alternate within the next five? I thought this just the other day b) Tells you everything about Cleary when you see the number of comments in this thread alongthe lines of "you deserve that $14M Danny". How often do you hear that about a pro-sportman? Interesting to see the no-trade clause in there as well....
Guest Crymson Report post Posted March 12, 2008 Kopecky and his 4 goals are not going to replace Huds or Sammy next year. I really like Kopecky and was happy to see him get some playing time with Datsyuk tonight, but he will not be replacing those 2 guys next year. He is a different type of player. Kopecky is big, he hits, he's got speed, he's difficult to take down, and he scores on very limited ice-time. Further, he's consistently improving his offensive game. On top of that, he doesn't cost much. He'll be in the lineup, and he'll probably beat the 4th line.
joshy207 156 Report post Posted March 12, 2008 Great news!!! Perfectly stated here... Excellent deal for both sides. Cleary gets the long-term financial security he deserves, Detroit gets their 3rd best forward signed for the next 5 seasons at a decent price. Looking forward to his return to the line-up

Not true. He's been the #9 forward in ice time pretty much all season long. He's had a handful of games here or there where he had more icetime, but more often than not he's been on the 3rd line or lower.
Cicada 4 Report post Posted March 12, 2008 as much as i like Hudler, i think it may be time to call it a day with it... he's just far too streaky, i don't think he'll ever make the top
Yc172 3 Report post Posted March 12, 2008 I dont really understand all the Hudler bashing. The guy has 38 points (12 goals 26 assists) and he is still only 23 or just turned 24. So he may be small, but he is deceptive enough on the ice to get away with that. I look at his goal to assist ratio. He's a natural play maker. So he may not have the vision or defensive ability of a great player, but that will come, i mean he is going to finish the season getting the equivalent of a point in every other game he plays. Everyone is so high on flip right now (including myself) but we should look at him a little closer. Getting 6 more minutes a game he has five less points, and if thats not enough, he only has 15 assists to go with his 18 goals. Filppula needs someone to get him the puck so he can put it in the net, and that is exactly what hudler can do. Hudler makes everyone around him better (excluding on the defensive end) and is a key part of this team. People should be ripping on someone like who has been awful this year Franzen (although he has picked it up a lot recently.. hopefully that continues into the playoffs). Hudler reminds me of datsyuk with his type of production.. high assists low goals..while filppula reminds me of zetterberg's type of production... high goals low assists..(although watching a game you can tell hudlers playing style is more of a natural shooter like a Lang combined with a zetterberg.. i cant believe i just said those two names in the same sentence.. while filppula is more of a fancy moves guy like datsyuk. Anyways my main point is although Hudler may seem like the most easily disposable player in the future, he is still just a kid and has a lot of room for improvement. This guy ranks 7th on the wings in terms of points, 2nd among people not on the 1st pp unit. Hudler will come relatively cheap and i would love for him to be a contributor to the team in the future. redwingschick33 0 Report post Posted March 12, 2008 I'm a PR intern for the Wings so last night before the game, I actually passed out the press release informing reporters about the deal. Some of their reactions were priceless to say the least! Personally, I am quite happy with this deal. Less than $3 million and we kept a gritty forward who played great in the postseason for us for another 5 seasons. Go Mr. Holland!

WhiteLightning91 105 Report post Posted March 12, 2008 (edited) Stupid Question: Anyone know what the qualifications are for a player's salary to be counted against the cap? For example; do Hartigan, McCarty, Quincey, Ericsson, Stafford, and Howard count against our cap number for this year? This is the spreadsheet I have for our current salaries. If you see any errors, feel free to point them out. 2007-08 Pavel Datsyuk 6.7 Henrik Zetterberg 2.65 Tomas Holmstrom 2.25 Kris Draper 2.128 Mikael Samuelsson 1.2 Jiri Hudler 1.015 Johan Franzen 0.941667 Kirk Maltby 0.883333 Valterri Filppula 0.733333 Daniel Cleary 0.6625 Dallas Drake 0.55 Aaron Downey 0.525 Tomas Kopecky 0.5 Matt Ellis 0.358 (Waived) Mark Hartigan 0.168 Darren McCarty 0.12 Nicklas Lidstrom 7.6 Brian Rafalski 6 Niklas Kronwall 3 Chris Chelios 1.15 (Bonus Included) Andreas Lilja 1 Brad Stuart 0.767 Brett Lebda 0.65 Derek Meech 0.483 Jonathan Ericsson 0.124 Kyle Quincey 0.1 Garrett Stafford 0.011 Dominik Hasek 4.05 (Bonus Included) Chris Osgood 0.85 Jimmy Howard 0.09 Cap Number 47.259833 Source: www.NHLnumbers.com Edited March 12, 2008 by WhiteLightning91

eva unit zero 271 Report post Posted March 12, 2008 But all those points would have come earlier in the season. Thus, streaky. For the middle 23 games of the 69 he has played, Hudler scored 19 points. This is also coincidental with Zetterberg and Holmstrom being out of the lineup for many of those games, putting Hudler on the top two lines. In the first 23 games and last 23 games, Hudler has been on either the third line or fourth line almost exclusively with only spotty power play time. In other words...if Hudler is played in the top six, he will score nearly a point per game. If not, he'll still score better than most third or fourth liners. Uncle Danny 155 Report post Posted March 12, 2008 To those that pointed out the interesting NTC, I think it makes perfect sense for Cleary to have one. I don't think anyone doubted that he wanted to stay in Detroit, given Babcock's presence and his own rejuvenation there... that, coupled with him taking a lower salary than he likely could have gotten on the open market made a NTC a no brainer. Without it, he ran the risk of taking a lower salary and then being traded. Imagine next trade deadline when the next Hossa comes on the market if he didn't have this clause. We've now got an underpaid, instant performer, under contract for 4 more years and at only 30 years old. Trading him up to a seller would be a no brainer. Savvy move on Daniel's agent's part. And I'm happy to keep him for another 5 years

Unless Cleary vastly underperforms next season...which would mean he wouldn't be the primary piece in a Hossa deal. With the NTC, I'd have rather seen a deal close to 2m...but I'll take it. Holland wasn't trading him anyway, or he'd already be gone.

I never said that Holland WOULD trade him away... what I was trying to point out is that his lower-priced, long-ish term contract makes him more attractive to other teams, and that he COULD be traded away after leaving money on the table, ostensibly to stay in Detroit. In other words, without the NTC in place, Cleary would have left himself open. Make sense? Contract negotiations 101: Plan for the divorce, not the marriage. Opie 308 Report post Posted March 12, 2008 Didn't bother reading the whole thread, my only thoughts on this, is GREAT FOR DETROIT, and GREAT FOR DAN!!!! This will be a good deal, especially if he builds chemistry with Dats and/or Flip. This will help the PK for years to come.
