Games now equal, San Jose is closing in

San Jose is up 2-0 in the third against the worst team in the league. Thats their 12th win in the past 13 games. Where are all the folks saying 8 points back is a lot??

After tonight, a smoking hot San Jose team is just 5 points back of a lowly Red Wings squad.

The home ice advantage is useless against the Sharks, they're insanely potent on the road, so really I could care less about going in at number 2 yielding home ice to them only.

Only on this board would the possibility of not winning 1st seed be a cause for panic. Come on, people--let's stay real here.

Regardless, the Sharks winning the Pacific is good for us; it means we certainly won't face them in the first round.

The most intelligent post I have read all day. Thank you.

Why would somebody really care much even?

The top seed is meaningless. The NHL gives almost zero advantage to the higher seeded teams in the playoffs.

The Sharks are a monstrous threat whether they're first or eighth.

I'd love for the sharks to win the pacific and have the stars against the ducks in the first round.

While I'm ecstatic one of these three teams cannot advance past the first round, I'd prefer Sharks v. Ducks. I see the Stars as less of a threat.

Seriously, we'll wipe Turco like a dirty ass in a 7-game series.

good post. for me, any team that makes it into the playoffs is scary. even facing the wild or the avs wouldn't make me feel all warm and fuzzy inside. playoff series are tough. (most of the time, with a few exceptions.) i'd love to not meet the sharks or ducks for sure in round one, but stars, canucks, or really anybody else doesn't excite me, per se. except for the fact that it's ******* PLAYOFF HOCKEY and it's going to be awesome no matter what, win or lose. bring anybody on at this point. i don't care what seed we are, what seed they are, who gets a whopping 57% of the icetime at home. sit back and enjoy the show; there's nothing we can do, no matter who we play...but enjoy it. because we're fans. and aren't fans supposed to enjoy the sport that they're watching? hell. yes.

why i am not afraid of the sharks: the hockey illuminati (probably scotty bowman and harold snepsts) will forbid da cup going to california 2 years in a row. ph34r.gif

dig the illuminati reference. : )

You know what 12 wins in 13 games mean? The Sharks are about to go on a losing streak. They're a good team, but they're not the 1978 Montreal Canadiens reincarnated.

Wings go .500 the rest of the way and we'll win the presidents trophy.

Since February the Wings look ordinary. I'm not panicking, but I am concerned. They certainly don't look like they could take very many playoff-bound teams right now. The injuries shouldn't be used as an excuse either. Colorado is still fighting for the Northwest Division lead, despite the injuries the Avalanche has suffered.

I have no problem with us not taking home the presidents trophy. Sure it would be nice to take home some extra hardware. Unless it is big and silver with a bunch of names on it then i don't really care.

Right now I care about matchups more than either seeds or home ice advantage. There are certain teams I wouldn't want to see the Wings play in the 1st round, even if we're the number one seed.

I agree completely. Being the number one seed, as us Wings fans have experienced so many times, means nothing. When the Wings won the Cup in '97 and '98, they went in as the number three seed behind Colorado and Dallas both times I believe (although please correct me if I'm wrong) and it obviously did not hurt them as they won the Cup both years. San Jose can have the first seed for all I care; we know all too well it guarantees nothing.

This isnt about the presidents trophy, this about matchups. Dallas has had a rough go and the Ducks are without Pronger. Its a lot more likely that either of those could drop to 7th, than they would drop to 8th. Unlikely, yet still possible.

And its also very likely San Jose and Detroit face off in the WC Finals. Personally, Id prefer 4 games at home instead of having to cross back to San Jose one more time if a game 7 arises.

Totally agree. Not only that, but hot streaks come to an end. I'm glad they are hitting that streak now, maybe they'll be on skid when the playoffs start.

Just a thought: if everything plays to form (it never does, but still...), as 2nd seed, we'd get the #3 (Northwest winner) in the 2nd round, while SJ gets the winner of Stars-Ducks. With no upsets (again, never happens), I'd almost rather be #2.

I like the way the standings look for now, I think we could mop the floor with Colorado in the first round...in theory anyway (3 shutouts in 4 games against them this season right?)
