Majsheppard 203 Report post Posted April 13, 2008 I honestly thought those goalie name chants were the dumbest things fans in every other building could do. The fact that I never heard that from the Detroit crowd made me proud. But today, I was like 'WTF IS THAT?" when it started. Oh well. At least we won, but yeah I agree, it sounds like something some expansion team would do. Finally someone feels exactly the same way I do. That may be the first time ever lol. Agree, it feels like something fans from a non-orginal six team would do. I like class, I like hockey. I don't like drunkin frat boy crap.
seeinred 1,488 Report post Posted April 13, 2008 I just have to point out that the Ole chant far outdates the Bouncing Souls. And what's the big deal about class? If a goalie is sucking, tell him he sucks. I don't mind it once in a while. If the fans did it all game, every game though, then I might have a problem with it. Yak19 303 Report post Posted April 13, 2008 (edited) I would love for the Wings to have a song like in soccer just everybody joining in on something that pays tribute to the team. I know there are ppl here who dislike soccer but im just talking about taking a ritual that could become a part of Red Wings hockey. P.S - I am a Football (soccer) fan example. Majsheppard 203 Report post Posted April 13, 2008 (edited) Whats funny is you call Nashville classless then refer to them as trashville. Come on guys any chanting in the Joe is great. Since when is hockey a classy sport? I love the ___ you suck chant. And I was not a drunken fool. It drives me nuts when people ***** about supporting thier team and dissing the others. Mr Maj I follow our post and you are anything but classy my friend. To all who were at the Joe today, you did great it was loud and electric. Probably better then Nashville which have one of the rowdiest crowds. Bottom line. Chant, ___ you suck. Chant, I love bananas! Just chant. Make noise support your team. Please be anything but classy, classy is Bettman. Hockey is Chuck Norris... Kay Bro-heim. But don't refer to Bettman as Classy, he is a rat. Classy and a fan, and being loud are not mutually exclusive. Rowdy, sure that somethign to want to emulate. I suppose you would like an anouncer who yells ON DA POWER-PLAY!!! as well? That seems to be rowdy, get all the expansion team fans to chant like mindless drones. You most likely also think that any fight is a good fight, even if the player does it without honor, without sticking to the code. I personally like when the guy beats the crap out of the other person without being a total dick. Bottom line, it makes you look like a hockey idiot to chant you suck to a goaltender that is keeping a team in the serries just because he allowed a goal. And if you think that it unnerves the goaltender and actually has an effect on his play, then you might agree that it could embolden the player and he could turn his game around and shut the team down. I know the people who are like this, as a season ticket holder I had four seats in front of mine they sold together on a game to game basis. Every game it is the same type of four people. They show up very late in the first period. They act beligerent and chant stupid things paying no attention to the game. They leave early in the first to get more booze, and they come back for maybe the middle part of the second and leave. Meanwhile real hockey fans, the same faces in the same seats during every game sit and watch the damn game. That is hockey, people intrested in showing up to see the game. They cheer and celebrate, and when the team needs a kick in the pants they chant let's go red wings. When there is a bad call they get on the refs. When there is someone who has earned their ire with constant poor sportsmenship they let them have it. They don't act foolish, they don't live to listen to whatever song they play or gimmick given between the whistles, they don't stand up and block peoples views to get their face on TV, they don't talk on cell phones, they don't upset other fans around them, and they don't give up on their team. They show up every game and they live hockey and pay alot of money to watch the best sport in the world and pay no mind to chicken dances or what have you. They erupt in anger at a bad call screaming from 24 rows back "THAT'S A HORRIBLE CALL". They say WAKE UP after a bad start, they really get into the LGW's chant when the team needs it. Otherwise they sit around in relative comfort taking in a grand experience. You know like these folks have since the fifties when some of them started coming. You want to tell me these fans are bad fans, you want to tell me they are wrong and you are right. Whatever, I have been to JLA in every situation you can imagine. When they couldn't get anyone to come and gave away a car every game in hopes to draw a crowd. I have been there for Cup clinching goals. I have been there on the 30th central division game of the year, and I have been there for the last two games. I tell you what, our fans are plenty loud and plenty into it when they need to be. The constant I see are those who are truely loyal. The way they act is the way fans acted for Howe to Yzerman. You want to change that, I suggest you just go become a fan of any team that has a mascot or cheerleaders. I know what hockey is, it is class. This isn't college, this isn't a rodeo, this is hockey. Chuck Norris is a bad actor, not hockey... Edited April 13, 2008 by Majsheppard

seeinred 1,488 Report post Posted April 13, 2008 The thing with the EPL chants/songs are that they have absolutely nothing to do with the game or even sport really. I mean, I absolutely love YNWA, but something like that seems kind of stupid for a Wings game.
Yak19 303 Report post Posted April 13, 2008 Thats the thing it doesnt have to do anything with the game its just the fans united together in a chant, more of a bonding between fans and the team.

Legendary D In 03 50 Report post Posted April 13, 2008 I was at the game today, and what bothered me too was when they announced the second star (I think) as Radulov, everyone booed, and I clapped. I obviously cheered my ass off for Detroit's players, but I at least gave a small low key applause for the competition. I just don't see the benefit in telling a professional athelete who is one of the best in the world at what he/she does that they suck. They obviously don't. Word, LDi03

Word, LDi03 I would like to make the case for suckage being a relative thing. No NHLer sucks compared to an average guy, but for example Parros sucks compared to Datsyuk. The whole "you couldn't do any better" argument thing never made any sense to me.
Shockwave180 0 Report post Posted April 13, 2008 Sorry, but all of you Wings fans who think the "You Suck" chants are classless or the sole territory of "rednecks" should watch a UM college hockey game at Yost Arena, or any other local college arena. That's where the chant originated, and Michigan (and many other college hockey fans) still use it regularly. Classy? Not really, but Nashville didn't invent it. Can't say the same about Red Wing fans overall at JLA. Doesn't make their fans classless at all. So I find it pretty hypocritical (classless could be stretching it but it comes close) that we are giving Nashville fans crap and lessons on "how to cheer" when JLA and Red Wing fans could easily make more noise on a more consistent basis. That certainly doesn't make us Red Wing fans on here sound good, so I think the original poster and the rest of us should stop acting all high and mighty like we are better. We sound spoiled, in a bad way. And while I personally don't like the OLE chant, at least the Canadian fans are doing something instead of sitting on their hands. New Orleans used to have a minor league hockey team in the mid/late 90s and fans there did the exact same chant when N.O. scored a goal as well. It isn't sole property/creation of the oh so horrible terrible classless Nashville franchise base. (/sarcasm) Seriously, I fail to see what is so terrible about it and it's pretty comical that people get so irked in here by it. Aussie_Wing 354 Report post Posted April 13, 2008 (edited) I hate the Ole chant, hate it big time. Leave it in soccer. Personally I love the You Suck! Chant and despise the Ole chant. Again I'm biased as I attend the UofMN and the you suck chant is very loud and quite impressive actually. Nothing wrong about trying to rattle the opposing goalie. And the Ole chant just reminds me of soccer and I cannot stand soccer as I believe it is the worst sport ever so anything tied to soccer should stay there. Pretty much sums up my thoughts!
