Day of anticipation for Detroit sports....

Rate this topic

Recommended Posts

So today (Monday 28th) there are no sports teams from the Motor City playing today. I know this is a Red Wings forum but the Tigers and Pistons need our support as well.

Today, is indeed a day of anticipation with the Red Wings playing the Avalanche, Tigers playing the Yankees, and the Pistons playing the 76'ers tomorrow night. All big games for each franchise. I know most of you here are not big fans of baseball and basketball, but its good to see Detroit have successful teams (Maybe Illitch will buy the Lions, far fetched I know, but I can dream).

Go Detroit Sports!!!

Hmmm.. that's interesting. I always assumed that hockey fans and baseball fans were linked. Maybe not?

Anyways I am a hardcore Motorcity sports fan and am very much anticipating the sporting events of tomorrow!

Deeeeeeetroit.

I know I've never been more excited to see the big three win all on the same day, i knwo I can't recall the last time that happened!

 The last time that happened would be tomorrow.

Seriously though, I was close to that Saturday with the Wings winning 5-1, the Tigers winning 6-4 and Toronto FC (you are probably all like 'wtf?') winning 2-0.

Well, I hate to let you down in a moment of positive energy, but I'm a Red Wings fan first, I don't watch basketball, and well I'll be watching baseball today and.....I'm sure I'm getting flamed for this one *shields himself from incoming airborne beer glasses* ...... LETS GO TRIBE!!!!!!

I will happily cheer on the Tigers (especially against my Yankee loving boss) and of course the Wings get 100% of my attention, but I refuse to root for the Pistons. I absolutely despise basketball. If the Stones win, cool! But if they don't I really could care less. Its kind of obvious what my 2 favorite sports are considering these are the only 2 bracelets I ever wear...

p.s. this is not a shameless plug, just think these are the greatest bracelets ever!

Playoff is playoffs, so I'm interesting in the Piston. Go them.

Maybe I'll make an effort to watch some of the game.

I'm guessing the effort you put into watching the Pistons will be more than the Pistons put into the actual game. They are about the most frustrating team to watch ever. I'm hoping the Pistons come out and act like they want to play tomorrow night. The Red Wings may lose games, but they almost always show up and play hard.

Football - I'll usually watch the wolverines > buckeyes game and the superbowl.

Baseball - I lived in NY State for 3 years, I want no part of that awful sport.

Basketball - huh? Is Rodman still playing for Detroit?

Hockey - RED WINGS! Hockey is the only sport I care to follow really.

Its amazing how so many hockey fans (atleast that i know) hate the game of basketball.

its almost like we've grown up watching this fast paced, tough, amazing sport and just can't comprehend what people like about a bunch of guys slowly running up and down a court, crying everytime they get touched where you score over a 100+ points per game. personally, i'll never understand hillbilly america (yes, im american to the fullest, not some canadian or immigrant) that loves the sport of basketball over hockey!

Well it's pretty personal, everyone with his own thoughts....

I can say i feeling pretty much the same for Baseball, yeah i'm not from North America but still i LOVE the Red Wings & Pistons.

I'm rooting them for years and will do forever.

Whether baseball is a pretty boring and stupid sport for me.

I don't mind the Tigers to win,but Red Wings & Pistons is the real sports and thing.

LET'S GO RED WINGS! -- BOO Lions, Tigers and Pistons!

Actually, I could care less about the other 3 Detroit teams. I can't stand the NBA, I really don't have anything against the Lions or the Tigers other than I'm a fan of the Packers and the Brewers.

Its actually quite simple. Americans like simple things. Football and Baseball (not so much basketball) are slow sports. Between each play or pitch there is generally an extended period of time, where the teams strategies are discussed. This is allows the average viewer time to realize whats going on. As opposed to hockey, where it is a such fast paced game that most Americans have not played themselves or are unfamiliar with the rules. The game is so fast paced that the average viewer is clueless and doesn't know whats going on at all. These fans wonder why the whistle is blown at certain times, and things like "icing," "offsides", and even penalties require explaining to do to the non hockey fan. You guys remember when the TV stations did that highlighted puck thing???

Another thing. Growing up and playing baseball, basketball, and football is extremely cheap and it is usually provided for by schools or the local community. Hockey costs thousands of dollars to play....think about equipment, ice time, travel time, etc. Also, you can play baseball, football, or basketball anywhere. Hockey requires either cold weather for the ice or a building that can support ice. Back in the 1900's it would have been hard to support an ice rink in warm weather climates. So the tradition of hockey is not as strong is the US as baseball, football, etc...

The biggest reason why hockey does not do as well is people don't care to understand the rules and the game. Every single person that I've met that has played or is knowledgeable in all four sports (hockey, baseball, football, and basketball) will say hockey is their favorite sport. Also the people that do not seem interested in hockey know nothing about the rules, history, the game, etc. The find more entertainment in watching cars go around a circle (NASCAR) See how Americans like simple things????

At last but not least, another reason why hockey is failing to grab new viewers is....drum roll.

The illustrious, Gary Bettman who actually is alienating the current fans, and failing to bring in new ones.
