hak 21 Report post Posted May 3, 2008 (edited) Congrats to the wings for a very successful postseason appearence so far. I'm very impressed so far and I can honestly say I havent been this excited for years. The drive and energy seems much greater than recent past post-seasons. Before creating this thread I went back a couple of pages to see what Round 1 MVP discussion looked like. And while browsing through all the threads I found a couple of ...interesting threads. Seems like there was a lot of sceptic and pessimistic posters here who didn't even think the wings would make it past the first round. I just hope they eat their crows now and hold there negative comments for themselves in the future. I was going to post some quotes but I decided not to. Lets leave this thread for a round 2 discussion Round 2 MVP Det 4 - Avs 0 Who had seriously predicted a sweep? Not me. I thought it would be an even series - taken to 6 or maybe even 7 games. The avs were a total failure and dissapointment. But the wings should have a lot of credits - they played like a team on a mission for the cup. My pick for the round 2 MVP is Johan Franzen. Everytime he scores I'm like did franzen just score again? I just can't believe how hot he is right now and that he's NOT SLOWING DOWN but rather if it is possible getting even hotter. He had 2 hat-tricks in 4 games. Breaking a NHL record for most goals in a series ever and the wings franchise record for most goals in a series. And it's just been 10 games so far. He's big and strong with alot of skills. Going in deep and working in the crease. If he use his body more and gets a bit dirty he'll be one of the more fearsome players in the nhl. HM Datsuyk & Z Your pick/picks for round 2 MVP? And what are your thoughts of round 2? GO WINGS! Edited May 3, 2008 by hak

redwingsgirl 0 Report post Posted May 3, 2008 The Fans! I was fortunate enough to be at the Joe for game 2 of this series and it was the loudest and most energized it had been in a long time! From singing "Sweet Caroline" to the constant OZZIE chants through the third period when the puck even came near him, it was fun and memorable. Franzen is amazing right now, no doubt about it. Ozzie is coming up with some timely saves. Z and Pavel continue to defy what should be physically possible to do with the puck. The entire team is really firing together right now. RedLightGoesOn 81 Report post Posted May 3, 2008 Is there any need to ask this question? Franzen. And Kudos to everyone else, everyone played great (except Lilja, for some reason he always finds a way to make a mistake to allow a goal).
Anomalously 0 Report post Posted May 3, 2008 My ballot would be Franzen (9G, 1A), Zetterberg (5G, 4A), Datsyuk (2G, 6A). One, two, three. There's no way you can't give the three stars to the offensive players this series, I thought they played excellent. Beyond them, how can you not give honorable mention to Chris Osgood (4-0, 2.26, .914) and Nicklas Lidstrom (4A, +4). Osgood didn't have to be incredible this series, but stood up tall late with small leads. Lidstrom was out there in every key situation, and I see him trying to compensate a lot for his partner's miscues (I specifically remember two instances, one with Lilja as his partner, another with Rafalski). He has a lot on his shoulders, and he always performs well. An interesting note about effective offense: Samuelsson, after being held to one assist in six against Nashville, went 2G, 4A in four, which is promising. Hopefully it isn't just touching the puck before Franzen puts it away. I hope that whole line is and stays hot.
awingsincebirth 0 Report post Posted May 3, 2008 Das Mule! On the one hand, you've got him scoring 2.25 goals per game in the series, which is ridiculous. On the other hand, you take him, whose a real legit scoring threat every time on the ice, and put him on the second line, and no team in the NHL is defensively strong enough to shut down both of our top 2 lines. Thus, you've got ZDH basically running around doing whatever they wanted for the majority of the series, and the Wings averaging over 5 a game. Basically, if Franzen keeps this up, this team is going to be IMPOSSIBLE to defend against effectively. Add to that the fact that our D and goalie are about as stingy as any in recent history, and you've got a team thats gonna be incredibly hard to beat, whether your Dallas or San Jose. Hopefully Babcock is still pushin the boys hard right now because I'd hate to see them lose their edge. MVP - Das Mule 1st runner up - Sasha 2nd runner up - Ozzy 3rd runner up - Pasha 4th runner up - Lids 5th runner up - (merely out of very low expectations) I though Sammy played a great series in general, with just a couple "O s***" moments. Go Wings!

vangvace 12 Report post Posted May 3, 2008 Strangely ESPN summed it up the best... Johan Franzen scored three goals in the Red Wings' 8-2 victory over the Avalanche. Franzen set an all-time NHL record for goals in a four-game series with nine. And he set a team record for goals in a playoff series of any length, breaking a mark set by Gordie Howe 59 years ago. Franzen was the first player to record two or more hat tricks in one postseason series since Jari Kurri had three hat tricks for the Oilers against the Blackhawks in 1985. He is the second Red Wing to post two hat tricks in one playoff series, joining Norm Ullman, who did it against Chicago in 1964.
