Nightfall 871 Report post Posted May 25, 2008 Well, on a closing note.... I am very impressed with what I saw from the Wings tonight. The second and third lines really kicked it into high gear. They accounted for 3 of the 4 goals which is promising to see. Cleary's play was impressive to see. He looked like a new man without that jaw brace on, and as a hockey player, I can understand why he probably was playing tenative with that device on. I really didn't rag on Samuelson too much, but I have to say, "I apologize". Good to see him come up big in game 1. Both sides had chances in this game. For as much as the analysts said that this could have been a 8-0 Detroit win, the Pens hit posts and had close calls as well. A few bounces go their way and the game could have been tied late. The Wings capitalized on their chances, the Pens didn't. Wings win. Every game is important, but Detroit has a chance to take a leg out from under the Pens if they win the next game. The refereeing was good as well. As a goalie, I can understand why that goal was waived off. If I was trying to go down in butterfly, and a forward has his stick in my five hole or interfering with me, I would be bent. As a Wings fan, I thought the call was weak, but I can't fault the refs for making that call. Great game! Lets hope for another strong effort on Monday night! Namingway 146 Report post Posted May 25, 2008 (edited) woooooooo so glad we got the first game. Time to celebrate until game 2 I was impressed by the whole team, especially Sammy. I mean who would've saw that one coming? Two unassisted goals from SAMMY. I also have to give lots of credit to Osgood. He was great tonight, when the refs stole that one that should've been the first goal, I thought the game would go down like game 4 from the Stars series. But we Ozzy stayed sharp and kept us in the game. I was really expecting more from Fleury and I'm sure I wasn't the only one (not to mention from the rest of their supposed "all stars") The Wings were stellar, not even the guys from Versus were able to deny that tonight. Cheers to all! LET'S GO RED WINGS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Edited May 25, 2008 by Namingway
Firehawk 305 Report post Posted May 25, 2008 Wow, MT said some pretty ruthless things. Too bad it really doesn't matter what his team does. Those comments he made could destroy his team's chemstry as much as it could motivate them...wow.

Firehawk 305 Report post Posted May 25, 2008 The Pens are what, 12-2 (now 12-3 in the playoffs and he's talking as if the Pens have lost 6 straight. I disagree with MT's comments. Not the right way to get on his team.

Firehawk 305 Report post Posted May 25, 2008 (edited) what did he say? You can watch the link that was just posted, but he was essentially saying his defense's goal is to be the worst defensive in the league and they don't care, and they should only take 30% of their salary because they're only trying for some of the game...stuff like that. LOL Good God. EDIT: Oh and he also said he never seen so many soft defensemen, and he is very disappointed because they don't care, and it looks like men against boys (i actually agree on the last comment lol). Never_Retire_Steve 35 Report post Posted May 25, 2008 Was out watching game with friends so didn't participate in GDT so I will include my final thoughts........ I can't believe the run of bad luck that Holmstrom has had. I mean that was a total bulls*** call to disallow that Lidstrom goal and seeing Holmstrom take a couple early penalties got me thinking how ineffective he has been these last few games and I really think it is because of the refs not wanting him to play his game and it has gotten to him. Apparently Sammy isn't completely useless!! Kronwall is a beast and has been amazing this post-season, even if you take away the 5+ huge hits that he has had he has been really good in his own end and leads the team in assists, he has been putting up a Conn Smythe effort very quietly. Detroit's team defense is unbelievable. Datsyuk and Zetterberg are absolute magicians with the puck, how about that shot by Z? M-V-P, M-V-P!! Osgood is solid despite seeing very long stretches with no action but still makes the big save when we need it. All in all a very positive first game to start off the finals with. Cern 0 Report post Posted May 25, 2008 Two observations: -I called it in the (looooong) wait between series - one needs only to look at Crosby's numbers to see that he's the key to Pittsburgh's excitedly-discussed offensive depth. The Wings' defensive play shadowed him effectively from start to finish, and although that first period had a few close shaves, that effort reflected itself in the Penguins' score. -What excites me is that unlike NYs or Philly's wins, this wasn't a case of Detroit getting a couple quick goals at the start of the game then finding themselves on their heels for the next 40 minutes as the Penguins play catch-up. They were a little slow to get on the scoreboard (disallowed goal nowithstanding) but the Wings showed that a team is capable of beating the Wings through 60 minutes of dominating hockey. This was a much less 'flukey' win than the Rangers or Flyers had, and that bodes very well for Detroit in upcoming games.
Nightfall 871 Report post Posted May 25, 2008 They missed alot of calls, including malkin dagerously sleuthing pavel Meh, the same could be said if you are a Pens fan. I have a friend who is a pens fan who pointed out a couple interference situations that should have been called. Fans of a team will always see the game differently and want more calls for their team they are rooting for.
Dabura 12,232 Report post Posted May 25, 2008 good god. how many times did Crosby mention them moving their feet and hopefully next time they'll "get the calls?!" I'm liking Crosby less by the minute. Show some composure and leadership captain. QFT. I think this was a terrible start for him. He was running guys, putting himself out of position, diving, whining, being owned physically -- in general, not being a great leader. I don't know, maybe he compensates with great locker room speeches? Meh.
