up2here 41 Report post Posted May 30, 2008 (edited) His post game press conferences should be interesting. Switching from commentator to coach. The mullet returns! He's such a pompous ass I forgot that he actually has a good minor league coaching record. Edited May 30, 2008 by UP2HERE

haroldsnepsts 4,826 Report post Posted May 30, 2008 (edited) I don't get why people think Melrose hates Detroit. He played for the Red Wings, and won a Calder Cup coaching the Adirondack Red Wings. He's also cousins with Joey Kocur. His first year as Kings coach (which he talks about all the time, unfortunately), he took them all the way to the finals. And was the last coach to get that miserable team past the 2nd round. Sure he says some stupid stuff from time to time, but mostly the guy's a goofball with a great mullet. I've never really gotten the hate for him. He does know hockey, and there's plenty of commentators who are much worse. Edit: Though to be clear, hiring him as coach of the lightning after over 10 years away from the job is a strange move. haroldsnepsts 4,826 Report post Posted May 30, 2008 He wanted the coaching job we gave Scotty So because he lost out on a coaching job 15 years ago to the best NHL coach of all time, he must hate the Wings??

Maybe that was just a joke because of the haircuts but I thought I remember hearing that Barry and Wendell were related when the wings picked up Clark. Turns out we're both right. He's cousins with Kocur and Clark. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Barry_Melrose
servo 15 Report post Posted May 30, 2008 So because he lost out on a coaching job 15 years ago to the best NHL coach of all time, he must hate the Wings?? well he has certainly been very anti-Detroit in all of his picks and commentary since then with the exception of this year. Leads me to believe that he holds grudges.

Leads me to believe that he holds grudges. I think he has a lot of man-love for Forsberg and by extension the Avs, I've just never really felt like he hates the Wings. NeverForgetMac25 483 Report post Posted May 30, 2008 So because he lost out on a coaching job 15 years ago to the best NHL coach of all time, he must hate the Wings?? I don't necessarily think he hates the Wings, but he sure has a hard time picking them to go far (or win it all for that matter) until he's absolutely certain it won't blow up in his face. Like in '97 when he talked about how the Wings didn't have a prayer than all of a sudden when the Finals shifted back to Detroit for Game 3, he made comments like he knew the Wings were gonna win it all along. While I agree the guy is just a goofball hockey personality, I just don't care for people that don't give credit until the absolute last moment when it looks like there's no other alternative. Also, it was really funny hearing up until a few years ago how it was going to be "the Kings' Year!"

TheWestWing 71 Report post Posted May 30, 2008 IMHO, this is the sad part of all of this - what ever happened to just winning - guess I didn't realize that coaches further sell the team - I mean, he's not Gretz or anyone who is about the only coach I know of (at least here in the Colonies) that fits the bill: According to the Star, incoming team owner Oren Koules has pushed for the hiring of Melrose in an effort to further sell the team and the sport in Florida. kylee 727 Report post Posted May 30, 2008 (edited) so does this mean he wont be on ESPN after this season/ we dont have to hear him "analyze" hockey? ps. anyone think at least maybe NHL2night might return next year? it seems Sportscenter has really picked up coverage of the league but maybe thats just because its the Wings/Pens? who knows... i think it would be cool for some NHL games to be back on espn2 but doesnt the NHL have a contract with Versus for like 3 more years?
