It's going to be tough for them, no doubt. Back at the trade deadline, I remember thinking that the Hossa trads was a good one, but only if they win the Cup this year.

It's sort of developing into a worst-case for the Pens if they don't win, because guys like Hossa, Malone and Orpik have had a good playoffs and possibly priced themselves out of Pittsburgh. And don't forget about the deals that Malkin and Fleury will get...

Some people call the Pens the next dynasty. Right now, they're closer to being the next Tampa Bay Lightning (minus the Cup, hopefully) if they're not extremely careful over this offseason.

They are a Dynasty.

Well like the show Dynasty anyway.

just makes me thankful Ken Holland/Jim Nill/Hakan Andersson don't go crazy at the deadline/don't sign free agents that don't fit in with the team's style of play (save a few names, but nothing major).

i just marvel at the way things are done in the organization to continue to produce a Cup contender year in and year out. and if all goes well monday night, another Cup championship team!

The Penguins are indeed in a bad spot this offseason. Unfortunately for them all of their postseason success will amplify their problems. A guy who gets his team deep will want rewarded.

Several UFAs (not positive you're right about 14), but July 1st is also the first day they can negotiate with Malkin and Staal. Any multi-year deals they sign with any of their free agents from this year will have to keep in mind that Malkin will ask for $9 million and Staal will probably ask for more than $4 million. That's about an $8 million raise over their current salaries, minimum, for just those two guys.

And then factor in that MAF is an RFA. He'll ask for $4-6 million. Before factoring in any UFA, their guys are getting $12 million in raises.

It's unfortunate that a team like this will inevitably split, especially considering before the Hossa deal, they had decent depth players that they could afford.

Wait until its comes out ALL these players want to go and play for Toronto, to fulfill a lifelong dream.

I'm surprised Roberts hasn't already been mentioned as a possible replacement for dear old Cliffy.

John Buccigross, late in the season, suggested that maybe Pitt should explore the option of trading Malkin right now. They want to keep Malone and Staal around longterm, and Malkin could fetch an obscene amount of young, inexpensive talent and draft picks for them in return.

Not a bad plan; his short-term value might have diminished somewhat after this series but any number of teams would probably give their left nut to have him. I don't see Pittsburgh bailing out on him though yet.

They were 9 million under the cap this year and with the expected increase they should have the money available to get most of these guys resigned. We know Roberts is gone and I doubt if they resign Laraque so that frees up 3.8 million right there. If I were the GM I would be focusing on acquiring a couple of seasoned defensemen via free agency - Hossa is most likely a goner because they aren't going to be able to sign him to a long term deal with Syd's big contract and Malkin's impending one....

I would love to see how Malone could fit in on our team.... for the right price! Anyone else think he could be an interesting addition?

Interesting angle they could get quite a bit for Malkin despite his poor performance but maybe premature.

Z and Dats needed a few years of seasoning to get to where they are now.. I wanted us to trade Datsyuk a few years ago! I was worried he was turning into Fedorov Jr... I was wrong and am very happy to have him as he has and continues to develop.

I'd take his combination of grit and scoring anytime...I think he's just entering his prime, and if we got him at $3.5 million or so long-term, he could prove to be a steal.

Orpik and Malone will be let go. Hossa and Fleury will be brought back. The rest are fillers.

 True, but I don't think that's a brilliant move by the Pens if that happens. Orpik and Malone are key players for that team. Hossa was a stupid, stupid, stupid trade. Mind-numbingly high priced for a rental. Fleury still has the potential to spiral back down into the depths of garbage he's been known for inbetween hot-streaks. Hopefully for the Pens he continues the stellar play he's been known for this post season because they're going to have to cut him a big juicy deal and he's short on consistent success aside from the last 4 months. That being said- they obviously realize all this and are going to deal with the situation as delicately as possible.

Not to mention the 27 mill in cap room.....

Whittle that down to Malone, Orpik, and Hossa...everyone else can be replaced if they dont re-sign at a decent salary

Fleury is a RFA...Staal and Malkin arent due til 2009....

How GOOD do some of the Wing's long contracts look now?! Datsyuk 7 yrs at 6.7mil, Kronwall 4 more yrs at 3mil, and CHRIS OSGOOD for 3 yrs at 1.416mil!!! Go Holland, what can I honestly say that would do him and the rest of our organization proper justice?

If Pitts trade Malkin then they better make sure they get a HUGE return and one that isn't dominated by picks...

Malkin's going nowhere....

Everyone (Including Pens fans) forget that Staal is 19...Crosby 20...Malkin 21...Fleury 23...

They are all 3-5 years from being in their "prime"

Lemieux didnt win a cup until he was 25.....

Shero is a damn good GM...the future is very bright....

Perhaps not this year...Detroit IS a great team....but this core will remain intact

It's not about being in their prime. The whole point is that Pittsburgh will be in an impossible situation in a year or two with all 3 of Crosby, Malkin and Staal on the roster. Crosby will make the max, Malkin will demand it as well, and Staal could be north of 5 million. If they pay all 3 of them, they'll have little to donate to their wingers and defenders. They have to be savvy about it, and the savviest move might be to keep Staal and retain Malone, trade Malkin for anything they want, and manage to replenish the rest of their roster with quality talent.
