toby91_ca 620 Report post Posted June 4, 2008 no remember it was the linesman calling goalie interference from way back on the blue line. No, I don't remember and I'm pretty sure this cannot be the case either. Linesmen can give their interpretations to the referres on certain plays, but they cannot make the penalty call on something like goaltender interference. However, a linesman can make a call when he sees something the ref did not when it comes to certains violations, see list below: (i)Major penalties (ii) Match penalties (iii) Misconduct penalties (iv) Game Misconduct penalties (v) Abuse of Officials (vi) Physical Abuse of Officials (vii) Unsportsmanlike Conduct (viii) Double-minor penalty when it is apparent that an injury has resulted from a high-stick that has gone undetected by the Referees

XxGoWingsxX 0 Report post Posted June 4, 2008 Thats Correct. Linesman cannot call penalties, with the exception of those stated above. Wow really? Thats just even more of an inconsistency by the NHL at this point. what a joke of a professional sporting league. It's pretty bad the wings can't play their game because they don't know anymore what they will and won't be allowed to do from game to game....especially with ohalloran at the wheel. Ohelloran was shot in detroit 20 years ago....and i believe it to be some kind of conflict of interest for him to be reffing detroits games, especially with him PUBLICLY in the media saying he hates detroit. Not to mention, every game we've lost so far these playoffs....was reffed by ohelloran...coincidence? maybe...but it just looks suspicious...even to my friend in florida who is a penguins fan. What is the inconsistency?? I'm not O'Halloran's biggest fan, but I think you are reaching rather far on your rant here. The Wings have lost 6 games in the playoffs so far, O'Halloran has only been apart of 3 of those games. They have also won games he was been apart of in these playoffs. Looking at the 3 games they've lost with him involved, the Wings were called for 13 penalties, while the other team was called for 17. I know this doesn't tell the story of missed calls, but it is useful information when someone is trying to build some sort of conspiracy. For the record, I think a lot of teams' fans dislike O'Halloran.

Ehh my fault, i had my facts a little off about ohelloran reffing all our losses....but the inconsistency is the penalty part....nobody knows what will be called, nobody knows the clear cut rules anymore, and nobody knows WHEN or IF things will or won't be called....just the whole officiating, and keeping the rules to the books...its inconsistent....i didn't mean it was conspiracy

eva unit zero 271 Report post Posted June 4, 2008 no remember it was the linesman calling goalie interference from way back on the blue line. Paul Devorski is a referee, not a linesman. The primary purpose of the linesman is to determien when infractions such as offsides or icing occur. The secondary purpose is to call a limited number of infractions (as stated above) if the referee does not see the play occur. I still believe a switch to three referees with a crew of off-ice linesman (not terribly dissimilar to the line judges in tennis) with one referee designated as the head ref (with the ability to overrule calls) would be a better system that saw most missed calls get called, and most bad calls corrected. And with fewer officials on the ice in the way of the play, too!
