lomekian 201 Report post Posted June 5, 2008 Don Cherry is a mildly entertaining old bigot who woudl prefer it if hockey was big canadian meatheads knocking seven shades of S**t out of each other. no suprise about his anti europe jibe.....but he picked Detroit from the start, and favours us for a repeat, so at least he's not sufficiently xenophobic to be blind! zaxx 0 Report post Posted June 5, 2008 Thank-you for posting a link to his ESPN video. I was looking forward to his thoughts. Anyone who thinks he was knocking Detroit or saying anything bat is a fool. He said he picked us to win a long time ago, and he thinks we can repeat next year. He also admitted to liking the big bruising style of the ducks more then our style but he loves the talent of Z and Dats. He likes the hitting more then the skill, he has always been like that, but at least he knows skill and appreciates it when he sees it. He had a lot of great things to say about our team. As for the European comments, well he loves Canada and he should since he is Canadian. I do not think he should have to appologise for loving his country. Sure he goes further with it then most should but he has fun playing off the non-Canadian players suck thing. Come on we all know a great hockey player is great no matter where he comes from. But Don is Canadian and should never have to appologise for loving Canada and their players more then other's. Just my two cents!!

haroldsnepsts 4,826 Report post Posted June 5, 2008 Yeah, that quote he was actually knocking Euro captains, saying Alfredsson was the only other one in the finals. I've always like Cherry, but more and more he's seemed like a douchebag who's getting left behind by the game.
red and white forever 10 Report post Posted June 5, 2008 i watched his comments after the first per. in game five on coach's corner and he pissed me off how much he praised the pens and barely mentioned the wings other than to say they'd win the series, which they did, but i've lost a little respect for him

Guess what its not 1975 anymore, I grew up with you and have all your rockem sockem but I have enough of all your s***, learn to adapt and get with the program. Maybe if the "good ol canadian boys" actually had some talent other then going hard in the corners with their hands up they would beat out all the European players for a spot on on of the 20 plus NHL teams in the league. Sorry if you didnt know the obvious... its about talent as a HOCKEY PLAYER. NOT where you are from. ******* bigot!!! Sorry to offend the prob thousands, just had to say it!!!! pucker4fischer 0 Report post Posted June 5, 2008 I like Don Cherry for all his crazy ass, off the wall comments. I don't fault him for loving his country. All Canadian players (and North American players alike) grew up around the Cup legends, rich history and dedicated their hockey careers to the thought of one day hoisting the Cup. Hockey originated from Canada. So for him, to see a team full of Euros who weren't so much bred in that same passion, obviously deep down disgusts him. Which shows in how he was gushing over Gary Roberts and mostly talked about the Ducks in the ESPN post game commentary. Being set in his old ways, he's just got to accept that hockey is turning into a universal sport where many euro players are just coming to grasp the whole canadian upbringing (Lidstrom is the exact example of the perfect Captain to bridge the gap between Canadian passion and Euro passion: see his post game comments). So what? Cherry's old and he has a right to be set in his preferences and opinions just like everybody else. He grudgingly gave us props and even picked us to win next year. The Detroit Red Wings organization made huge strides in growing the game overseas in bringing over and developing such a highly skilled, talented mostly European team. I'm all for adding European flavor because ultimately it makes this sport the most entertaining sport out there and a better product for us all to enjoy. This was landmark!!! Congrats to the Detroit Red Wings 2008 Stanley Cup Champs. All in all, Don could be more of hockey ambassador if he was a little more accepting and a little less bitter. I still love him for his rants and passion for the sport.

It's just that he likes smash mouth hockey better. No big deal. Yep. Look I know people in here love to twist and scrutinize every. single. word. of a player, coach, or analyst....but seriously, our team just won the . Why must we find pointless stuff to complain about NOW of all times? Cherry said we'd win the Cup from day 1 of the playoffs and stuck to it. How can you be bitter when you picked somebody to win from the start?
Doggy 130 Report post Posted June 5, 2008 I just hope this Cup can end all the talk about Euros and Canadians. Seriously, a good player is a good player. It shoudn't matter where he comes from. Lidstrom is a great captain. Where he's from can't change s***. Country of origin should only matter in internationals tourneys. I'm over it. The Detroit Red Wings won the 2008 Stanley Cup with 20 great players and a great captain.
