Question: Will the Wings sign a big name free agent?

I know, I know we just won the cup, if it aint broke don't fix it, but we have cap room. The second line is still shaky IMO due to the inconsistency. I still think the Wings could use a good scoring second line winger. Someone like a Ryder or a Rolston or a Demitra would fit in nicely.

Z-D-H

Franzen-Flip-Rolston/Ryder/Demitra

Cleary-Draper-Sammy

Hudler-Kopecky-Maltby

Helm

What do you guys think? Will the wings sign a big named free agent? I mean Sundin, Hossa, Jagr and Nasuland are available as well... I just dont see why they wouldnt go for a big name when they have the cap room and a second line spot open.

Discuss.

avery is great at what he does but he doest not fit in w/ this organization. no chance in him comin here.

i think if drake retires, avery could take his spot. plus he played on the second line for the rangers and when you get past his nonsense , hes actually a pretty good player that can make plays and put the puck in the net

i think the Wings will focus on resigning/extending their own players. i wouldn't mind seeing rolston in the Winged Wheel though. with a guy that can shoot like he can on the roster Babcock would have to take Samuelsson off the point on the second PP.

also, there's no way Helm stays on the roster as a 13th forward. if he isn't going to have a regular shift he should be in Grand Rapids.

no way to avery.

i could dig Demitra or Naslund.

Hossa seems like he wants to stay in Pittsburgh. as for Jagr, he is one of my favorite players but just off a random assumption he would probably want too much money and he also said that if he was going to play anywhere it would be in New York.

my vote goes for Naslund, but only at the right price, and with Kenny Holland never forgetting the big pay day coming up for Zetterberg.

Demitra always seems hurt, so I'd pass on him.

I wouldnt' be surprised if Naslund could sort of revive his career in Detroit, especially with the Swedish players and the talent around him. Also, the pressure of being a captain in Canada would be off his back.

Sundin and Hossa will probably be too pricy, hampering our chances of paying Hank the money he'll want.

He wants somewhere in the 4 mill per range, more than hes worth.

Jagr was entertaining offers from Russia, there was a report from Russia I think it was during the playoffs saying he would play there next season. Nothing official said here though.

Naslund would be a dream come true for us. Granted he was making 6 mil a season, things are different now. Hasn't scored over 60 points in two seasons, so his value has lowered contract wise. Plus being he is a swede, and at 35 years old, he has a REAL shot for a cup with the wings. Hmmm, I wonder how Franzen and Naslund with filp would do? Pretty god damn good IMO

You have to understand that the cap room is a bit of a mirage. Unless one of these guys decides to sign a 1-yr deal, we don't have the capacity to offer guys 4+ yr, 20 mil contracts. That cap room will disappear after next season when Franzen and Zeta will both be locked up long term.

The biggest possible acquisition I could see is a replacement for Stuart if he leaves. Wade Redden comes to mind.

A big-name free agent? No. Unless the guy is willing to sign a one-year contract, we won't get one. Why, you ask? It's because we'll need the cap space for Zetterberg's and Franzen's extensions. We can't tie up that cap space with a big-namer, and such people don't tend to take one-year contracts these days.

Avery is a scumbag. This organization does not sign scumbags.

Once Kenny signs Z and Franzen to extensions I think he'll make a splash and sign Sergei Fedorov

Actually Feds might not be a bad idea at the right price but I'd like to see Sundin here. Expensive or not, he's motivated to win and with the Swedes he'll fit in. I like the idea of having him on the second PP too

Why are people so hung up on Naslund? If we had hardcore offensive issues, I could see where hed be helpful, but hes nothing special. His offensive offput has been steadily decreasing for the past three years. He only averaged 55 points last year. Give a little extra time to Filppula, Hudler or Stein, and you could see any of them or all of them break that 50 point barrier.

Naslund has been dogged by the Canucks organization for a few years now. Why? Because hes lacking in energy, consistency, and leadership. Hes a shadow of his former self and is closer to the Robert Langs of the league than the Johan Franznens these days.

If we sign any big name UFAs, the only ones I could see fitting our organization are Rolston or Commodore. Those guys have a lot of heart. Commodore is a similar player to Stuart and would be a great #4 fit with Kronwall. Rolston has the speed and the defense to fit right in amongst our top 6. Other than that I see no reason why to go town on free agency. Flip, Hudler, and Franzen are only going to get better, and the bottom liners like Abdelkader and Helm look better and better.

Although I dont see the Wings going after any big names, its possible that the Red Wings could have Zetterberg and Franzen locked up in July and still have a crack at some of this years UFAs.

have to switch those two around... i think helm will be awesome next year, as he was in the SCF. most of his face off wins came against Sid the baby which i know Kopecky wouldnt be able to do so i think he stays in

i've been saying for years that i have wanted Rolston and have thought that he would be a great fit for our team. Im a sucker for a Hometown Boy as well! His slapshot is the best in the league by a forward in my book. His style of play is classy just like our team now. I think if we are looking for a big name free agent this offseason and are factoring in the thought of who will fit and mesh with our team and style of play, along with a reasonable salary as to not kill us to bad, i think Rolston is the only one that fits that mold. Bring him home Kenny, please? For my birthday (as if a stanley cup wasnt enough of a gift haha)
