Penguins file for arbitration w/ Fleury

He will only get a one or two year deal... if they do not sign him by the time it goes to arbitration.

Allows the Pens more time to sign him and keeps the RFA offers away for a while.

Malkin said at the award show he is not interested in making more than Crosby ($8.7 million) and thinks they will come to an easy extension of 5-6 years.

Hossa has hinted he would take a pay cut to be with a cup contender...

I hope they keep both. $25 million on three forwards will ensure about half the team is made up of AHLers.

Go Pens, sign them all! :D

So lets say in your scenario:

Crosby 8.7

Malkin 7 (at min)

Hossa 7 (at min)

Fluery at least 5 if not 6

At best they are looking at

27.7 mil there, you add 6 more for Gonchar (not sure if that is a full hit or not)

2.7 in sykora

36.4 mil tied up in 4 forwards, 1 netminder and one D-man OUCH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

They still have to sign Orpik and Malone, How with that kind of money already sewn up in those 6 players!!!

Then you add

Ryan Whitney at 3

Sydor 2.5

Gill 2.1

44 mil

Scuderi and Letang barely make a mil combined so there d is full, in terms of having enough warm bodies;

Staal, Kennedy, talbot are about another 2.5 mil

47.5 mil in 14 players and still no Orpik or Malone.

With a 56 mil cap they are hurting badly they need atleast another 7 players at bare minimum!!

And no backup!

Granted my numbers for Fluery, Malkin, and Hossa are guesses but I would say accurate guesses, seeing as Hossa made 7 last year maybe he goes to 6, still that is over 46mil for 14 players they will need a bunch of players signed at about 500k.

looks like Malone is gone though, and no news about Staal yet...

i wonder how much a 19 year old 3rd line centre really expects to get

He's only a 3rd line center because guys like Crosby and Malkin are ahead of him.

He'd be a solid #2 on a LOT of teams.

Malkin will make no less than $8M.

Hossa will likely hit real close to $8M.

Whitney's cap hit is $4M.

Gonchar's cap hit is $5M.

Both Malkin and Staal are under contract for another year, both are due to be RFA's after next season. I think Malkin will sign an extension this summer, not sure about Staal, but if he doesn't, not a big deal for the Pens. I think the Pens would love to sign Staal to an extension now as I suspect it may be more costly for them next year.

So are we going to see a trend where every RFA will go through arbitration

No. There's a limit to how many players a team can take and how often. I'm firing up the CBA I'll have a definitive answer shortly.

The big limits are as follows.

A player can only be taken to club initiated arbitration once.

A team can only take two players to arbitration per year.

...just a comment on your sig pic. SWEET! If those guys are up next year that is a total of 9 Swedes on an 18 skater roster! I do believe that would be a record and an NHL high! If they sign Sundin or Naslund... WHEW! Team Sweden for sure!

...ok, back to the regularly sceduled topic...

...just my naivity, but who is the Swede next to Holmstrom?
