Rate this topic

Recommended Posts

The Hockey Hall of Fame induction committee meets tomorrow to decide who goes into the Hall this fall.

This is a unique year in that due to the lockout, no new players are eligible for induction.

Notable candidates looking to get the nod tomorrow are:

- Tom Barrasso

- Doug Gilmour

- Dino Ciccarelli

- Pavel Bure

- Glenn Anderson

- Guy Carbonneau

- Igor Larionov

- Phil Housley

- Kevin Lowe

- Adam Oates

- Vincent Damphousse

There will also be one person named as an inductee in the builders category. Longtime NHL linesman Ray Scapinello is expected to be named an inductee under the Referee/Linesman category.

Canadian Press journalist Neil Stevens will receive the Elmer Ferguson Memorial Award for print journalism and Mike 'Doc' Emrick will receive the Foster Hewitt Memorial Award for outstanding contributions as a hockey broadcaster.

The announcement of the 2008 inductees will be made at 3:30 tomorrow.

I'd love to see Bure get in, but it's never going to happen.

Also, why in the hell is Glenn Anderson not in the HOF? He was always a great clutch player, and even though he played with other great stars, his playoff numbers are almost as good as anyone ever to play the game.

This will probably be Anderson's year to get the nod....

I'd love to see Larionov get in based on his entire career, both before his departure from Russia and his days in the NHL. Based on NHL history alone, I don't think he gets in. However, if the voters take into account everything he did for the game, from his days as a premier player in the world with USSR and his role in leading Russian players to defect and come to the NHL, then the voters should not overlook him.

Other than that, I think Housley most likely gets in (1200+ points from Dman) and Oates, Gilmour and Ciccarelli (600+ goals) all have great chances.

Well considering there are players in the Hockey Hall of Fame that HAVE NOT EVER played in the NHL, and the fact that it is the HOCKEY hall of fame and not the NHL hockey hall of fame, then yeah, you can be sure they'll take into account his entire career.

Given that -- no new players were added -- this is one of the best reflections I have ever seen of how hard it is to get into the HOF. Now that I am getting older, I am seeing people's careers from start to finish. There are atleast three players on here that I thought were sure thing HOFers when they played that probably won't make it...

It is important to remember that in the early part of this decade some questionable players were admitted and they have made things a touch more exclusive since -- I do not know "the lack of true greatness" argument, but I know that it has been made...

I also know that the HOF has always been criticized for focusing on NHL players (right or wrong)...

One of the Biggest debates: (stolen from Wiki)

[Paul] Henderson has not been inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame, and there has been much debate over his omission. He scored one of the most famous goals in Hockey and Canadian sports history when he scored the winning goal in the deciding game eight of the 1972 Summit Series between Canada and the Soviet Union. If Henderson was inducted, it would be due almost entirely to the historical significance of that goal (plus his game-winners in games six and seven as well). Although his NHL numbers were respectable (236 goals and 477 points in 707 career NHL games), they are not close to the levels of those generally selected for induction. His candidacy has led to many debates among hockey fans, because although his performance in the Summit Series made him one of the most well known names in hockey, many fans feel that it is not right to honour a player's entire career because of one highlight.

Anyway, I don't know for sure what counts, but I think in the end Larionov gets in and Dino doesn't... I think Oates gets in but Damphousse doesn't...

I think Doug Gilmour will make it too, but I would hate to argue this stuff for a living.

Fetisov, is the only modern era player who had a substantial career outside of the NHL that I can think of, aside from him its all really NHL players (unless go back to the pre-NHL era).

Actually, Paul Henderson scored the GWG in the last 3 games of that series. The guys on wikipedia need to edit that properly.

Likely to make the HHOF eventually...

- Doug Gilmour

- Dino Ciccarelli

- Glenn Anderson

- Igor Larionov

- Phil Housley

- Adam Oates

I would say that Larionov, Gilmour, Anderson and Ciccarelli are the most likely to make it from this class.

Ciccarelli does not beat Oates. Probably not Housley, either. People look at the fact that Dino was never really even close to being the best player at his position. All of the others were, at one point, considered the best or one of the best at their position. Dino never reached that top tier in his career.

I'm rooting for Dino and Igor...it will be nice to have a couple more fellows with Red Wings ties in the Hall. Just think - Igor was Pasha's hero growing up, and Dino was the one who must have taught Homer everything he knows. Nice how the two tie into each other in a way.

I think Dino gets in on his numbers. It is awfully hard to repeatedly turn away a guy who has 600 career goals in the NHL. Phil Housley is in. I think Larionov could get in... he was great on the national stage and had a productive NHL career. Glen Anderson should get in this year too. He was too clutch not to be in the Hall.

Doug Gilmour or Adam Oates... that's tough. Gilmour was a great 2 way player, and Oates didn't win much, but is one of the best setup men in history. They could both get in.

Go back and read it again. It is correct. Remember, it was an eight game series.
