Russian League poised to offer Malkin $12.5 mill/yr

Dominik Hasek once said that it takes a european player about 5 years in the NHL to care about the Stanley Cup more than Worlds or Olympics. Luckily for us, I think it's been clear the last two years that Datsyuk has hit that point.

Malkin is another matter.

I think he likes it here to be honest, the atmosphere of the NHL is way more exciting, and hopefully he has enjoyed the fame and success he has accomplished. For any Malkin lover, maybe a thing that could keep him here is the lovely North American ladies that he can get. Hopefully he takes that into consideration.

Are you sir insinuating in some way that Russian women are not attractive? I submit this video to prove that the Russian woman is indeed quite fashionable:

How the heck do you imbed a movie any way?

P.S. Look what capitalism has brought!

I know he was fazed as the playoffs wore on (mainly because the Wings were able to shut him down), but I can't believe I didn't hear this quote.

Anyone have a link?

I don't have a link but I remember hearing him saying it too.

What are you basing your statement that he likes it here on? You two buddies, do you call him up and say "Malks, how's North America treating you?"

I have seen the backstage antics him and his teammates pull on each other. The Pittsburgh Penguins as a team are like a family, they all seem to get along and really treat each other like brothers. Malkin is no exception to that, at least from what I have seen in locker room footage.

Oh and about the ladies comment...

I'm just going to assume this is him manwhoring it up in North America.

Does anyone know if his agent has commented on the situation? I mean I'm guessing if he has, it was somewhere along the lines of "we have no comment at this time".

THE GLOBE AND MAIL: Eric Duhatschek reports Malkin's agent JP Barry claims his client has no interest in returning to Russia to play and is focused instead on re-signing with the Pittsburgh Penguins despite the possibility of earning considerably more in Russia. Duhatschek also reports the new Russian league stands a better chance to sign Jaromir Jagr, who's believed interested but could opt to re-sign with the NY Rangers for less money for personal reasons.

If you'd rather be rich than in teh best league in the world, then go.

with contracts like that being offered I think it is potentially debatable as to whether the NHL will continue to be the best league in the world...

dont forget Ford and GM once scoffed at the idea of an upstart foreign competator gaining a foothold in the industry...look where they are now

remember when Datsyuk pondered an offer from AK Bars? I think these offers are token and half-heartedly genuine... to help promote these foreign leagues. In the end, all it accomplishes is a leverage tactic to aid the contract talks.

Personally, I'd like to see Malkin take this offer. maybe the Pens could reap a transfer payment.

Malkin has no interest in Russian offer

Friday, June 20, 2008

By Dave Molinari, Pittsburgh Post-Gazette

OTTAWA -- Evgeni Malkin might have a chance to become the highest-paid hockey player in the world.

But he would rather, his agent said this evening, continue to play for the Penguins.

A new hockey league in his native Russia reportedly is willing to give Malkin a contract that would pay him $12.5 million per year, tax-free.

Doesn't matter, J.P. Barry said this evening. Malkin isn't interested in leaving, and has the framework of a new contract in place.

"He's not interested in (playing in Russia)," Barry said. " He wants to stay in Pittsburgh. He wants them to keep, hopefully, as many of these players together (as possible) and he wants to try to make a run next year."

Malkin is believed in line for a five- or six-year deal that will pay him roughly $8.5 million per season, well under the maximum allowed by the NHL's collective bargaining agreement.

Per that labor agreement, Malkin's next contract can't be formalized until July 1

hmmm... so greedy, lazy russian if he takes the deal. Idiot for turning down the large sum of money and playing in his homeland if he doesn't take it. Talk about a lose lose.

The fact that the league is shotgunning contract offers out to signed players scares me a little bit. A couple of non-russian players being treated well over there could lead to some fear for the NHL.

:scared:

What does that girl have against attractive men? Malkin looks like some freaking ogre or something.

That just shows you what money can buy. That girl is probably already thinking about what his future contract can do for her closet.

But I believe the Beatles summed it up best, "Money can't buy me love." :sly:

To be honest, I couldn't care less.

None of the North American superstars will ever go over there and if a few Russian's or Europeans head that way so be it.

Besides, former NHLers who've played over there recently have said the arenas and conditions in the RSL (or KHL now) are so poor that the league is easily 20 years away from being anywhere near the standard the NHL employs.

Let guys like Fedor Fedorov go home. They won't be missed.
