GMRwings1983 8,804 Report post Posted June 30, 2008 Liles is overrated, and now overpaid. Isn't this gross overpayment of players one of the reasons the league went into a lockout several years back?

tiff_luvs_homer 5 Report post Posted June 30, 2008 (edited) I am happy about it, I really like both of them and I'm glad they're sticking with the avs I'm still sitting around biting my nails waiting for a decision from Super Joe though.... don't go Joe! YoungGuns1340 1 Report post Posted June 30, 2008 Foote is 36, but regardless, 3M is a pretty good deal on the market these days. 3M at age 39 is a little tough to swallow, but who knows where the cap will be at that time, or market value for Dmen either. Liles got about what I expected. He might've even got more on the open market. A lot of teams are desperate for puck-movers, and likely would've bidded out some team to get it. I know how much everyone loved Stuart here, but I wonder if Salei might've filled in just as admirably with the Wings. Hes a very underrated puck-mover, and more physical than Stuart as well. The difference is, Salei isn't a rental. When the Avs traded that (2nd?) pick for him, he still had 2 years left on his contract at 3M. Ironically, thats exactly the type of contract the Wings could take on.
Dabura 12,232 Report post Posted June 30, 2008 I know how much everyone loved Stuart here, but I wonder if Salei might've filled in just as admirably with the Wings. I wanted Kenny to go after Salei at the deadline, but after seeing him screw up time and time again in that series...meh. Not so fast, not so great with the puck, not so smart. Sakic has been one of my favorites even through the rivalry years because he is so much like Steve Yzerman, even has the same number. I will be almost as upset as the day The Captain called it a career when Joe hangs up the skates. If he splits to another team it just won't seem right. I can't see that happening. He's been with the same organization his whole career.
Rice 42 Report post Posted June 30, 2008 Isn't this gross overpayment of players one of the reasons the league went into a lockout several years back? Yes, but the cap ultimately limits gross overpayment. If teams want to be stupid let them be stupid within a limit.
NeverForgetMac25 483 Report post Posted June 30, 2008 Yes, but the cap ultimately limits gross overpayment. If teams want to be stupid let them be stupid within a limit. The funny part about being stupid within a limit is it truly screws your team much more than before the cap era. Atleast back then if you had an owner that didn't mind spending, you could always bring in other talent without reservation aside from money.
RockyMountainWingGal 108 Report post Posted June 30, 2008 Liles is overrated, and now overpaid. Isn't this gross overpayment of players one of the reasons the league went into a lockout several years back? Exactly. Foote belongs on the Avs - expected (although I still think he should have stuck it out in Columbus and been their "C"). Their defense is bad any way you put it - Foote is a decent mid-level Dman - but he's now their elite defenseman and he got burned something awful over and over in the Wings series. Detroit # 1 Fan 2,204 Report post Posted June 30, 2008 If Liles is a 4 million dollar defenceman, I wouldnt be surprised if Stuart wanted 4.5 or 5 million. Lidstrom, Niedermayer and Pronger, those calibre defenseman are all 10-11 million dollar defenceman if you make the comparison between Liles new deal and them. Gonna be nice if the Avs fall flat on their faces next year.
Superman54 91 Report post Posted June 30, 2008 The real truth is a guy like Liles probably shouldn't get 4 Million a year. Its a definiate over payment in my books, but I am not a GM so....
