nkuehnl 0 Report post Posted July 2, 2008 Vancouver has an amazing defense and one of the best goalies in the league. Their young players are stepping up, and Sundin would instantly legitimize their 2nd line. Vancouver is a couple of forwards away from being a serious contender. Sign Sundin now, make it to the deadline, and acquire a big name forward and you're set for a good chance at the Cup. Detroit: great chance at winning, 7 million dollars Vancouver: decent chance at winning, 20 million dollars It's not an easy decision.
StevieY9802 6 Report post Posted July 2, 2008 (edited) This has been a boring day so far hasn't it? Give me something. Hossa, Sundin anyone. Not really to the Wings, just want some action. Edited July 2, 2008 by StevieY9802
b.shanafan14 733 Report post Posted July 2, 2008 (edited) I like that the Wings have offered him a 1 year, $7 mil contract. I think that is perfect. Its not chump change or a cut, its just not insanity and it gives Mats his best chance to win a Stanley Cup. Really nothing to lose here. I just hope Kenny gets to signing Filpulla already. All the Wings really need is another scoring winger to play with Flip, but if we can land Sundin (which I still give only about a 25% chance of happening) thats good too. More likely is a cheaper player with a finishing touch (which is not Bertuzzi, some people are confused. NeverForgetMac25 483 Report post Posted July 2, 2008 I know a Cup should be important but if Vancouver is offering $20mi over 2 vs 7 over 1 its a very tough decision. The guy is going to retire soon and he has his family's security to think about. Thats alot of money! I firmly believe family monetary security is the least of Mats' worries. From 1991 up until this season Mats has accumulated $74,042,632.00. No doubt $20 million over 2 years is beyond tempting, but I don't think Mats is too concerned about getting his next paycheck. Valas19 50 Report post Posted July 2, 2008 Maybe he'll just pull a Selanne/Niedermeyer/Forsberg like last year and sit out for awhile and wait to see which team looks like a true contender or is a comfortable fit (and still has money to burn).

I refuse to believe that he is really mulling this over due to money. He's going to get paid, and he and his family will be fine.
BeeRYCE 2 Report post Posted July 2, 2008 I don't want him here, especially for $7 mil. Sundin would probably be worth 6M, so paying an extra million wouldn't be too bad of a deal considering we could sign him and still have plenty of space left. It also wouldn't effect our chances of re-signing Franzen and Zetterberg next season, since it's only one year.
T.Low 1,011 Report post Posted July 2, 2008 Is Sundin still sleeping?!! Somebody wake his ass up and get his decision, already! I guess its easy to sleep in when you're dreaming about your millions.
McCartyFanForLife 17 Report post Posted July 2, 2008 Is Sundin still sleeping?!! Somebody wake his ass up and get his decision, already! I guess its easy to sleep in when you're dreaming about your millions. He's in Sweden right now; I don't think he's under any rush to make a decision. Some reports indicate that he wants to stay in the Eastern Conference, but I'm pretty sure it's all conjecture at this point.
CUJO#31 0 Report post Posted July 2, 2008 So I guess this will say a LOT about Sundin's character, is he in it for the Title? Or is he in it for the money? I was thinking the same thing. An interview with his agent on TSN said he had like 9 offers on the table and he hasn't thrown any team out yet. I think he is in the position to take his time since he doesn't exactly need to go to a team who is in a hurry to rebuild around someone. I'm sure he will go where HE thinks he has the best chance to get a ring.

The guy is going to retire soon and he has his family's security to think about. Thats alot of money! What's amusing is that say he takes the Vancouver offer and then retires after next season... the Canucks still have that $10-million cap hit for 09-10 even if he's not playing. Now, there may be a "loophole" in there regarding the signing bonuses, etc., that are rumored to be part of the Sundin offer, so the possibility is there to work around it -- but I'm pretty sure the CBA prevents those shenanigans. We'll see.

Guest Dump-N-Thump Report post Posted July 2, 2008 Awesome At this time of his career i highly doubt money is a top priority.. I think winning a cup is however.. If he wants 2y/20m in van or 1y/7m in detroit.. Ill take detroit's offer simply because i want that damn cup.. Can you honestly find a weakness in Detroits team? only one it could be is we are on the softer side, But for the past 2 years we have proven that is a non factor *almost* Make it happen mats
servo 15 Report post Posted July 2, 2008 IMO, if we had him on our roster and assuming he has a decent year, he provides an ancor for the best second line in hockey. WOW
Matt 1,049 Report post Posted July 2, 2008 I'm thinking Sundin will be this year's Forsberg. If that's the case then I think that greatly improves the Red Wings' chances of landing him. As it stands adding him to our payroll at the reported offer would put a pretty good squeeze on the cap when you're looking at re-signing Filppula, Chelios and a 3rd/4th-line grinder type -- and that goes without mentioning Howard, Ericsson and whatever happens with Quincey. I'm just not seeing how it's possible for the Wings to get him signed at that offer this summer.

StevieY9802 6 Report post Posted July 2, 2008 I hope he doesn't do the Forsberg thing. Peter at least had the injury as an excuse to sit out a while, Mats doesnt. I would look at it as Mats waiting to see who was doing well and then go to the best team. I don't like that at all. And "I don't want to be a rental" sure wouldn't be true then because that would be exactly what he would be.

There's a lot more to the NHL than just playing hockey. The travel in the west is down right brutal.. The reporters following a team on a western road trip get exhausted, and they're not even playing. Teams like the Rangers rarely stay in a hotel for conference games, let alone take any four/five hour fights like the Canucks have to quite often.
Matt 1,049 Report post Posted July 2, 2008 Sundin will be signed by a team before training camp. Remember that whole speal last season about starting a season with a team and seeing it all the way through? I never said that his decision would lag into the start of the season, just speculated how that would, in effect, be a benefit to the Red Wings because of the cap. Should be interesting how quick he signs if Hossa, et al, start signing on the dotted line.
