Do the Recent Signings get Butts in the Seats this Year?

Ok,

I have to say, I'm absolutely amazed we got Hossa coming in next year. I am so excited. I was about to leave from work and a guy at his cubicle says, "Hey Dave, check this out..." and he has the article with a headline "Hossa signs with Detroit for 7.4 million". At first I was like, "What did you do, alter it in word or something?" I totally didn't believe it.

Then I saw it on freep.com and was like "wow, if we don't cause some serious damage in the playoffs next year, there's something wrong.

Anyways, do you think that these recent signings will bring some butts back to the seats in the regular season games, or do you think with the economy the way it is and hockey not being a big deal until the 4th round of the playoffs around here, it won't matter?

Marian Hossa isn't really a household name. Not that anyone in hockey really is, but he's not a butts-in-the-seats guy.

Now, the defending Stanley Cup champions, that's what ought to fill the seats. Much better than "oh here we go doing pretty good but losing in the playoffs again."

The signings along with the winning the cup will definatly help fill some empty seats. However I think having someone that doesn't mind dropping the gloves or stirring the pot consistently during the regular season may help for sellouts...

I heard 3 groups of people in my travels today discuss Hossa and hockey in an ignorant fashion. The point is they WERE talking about hockey. Sellouts may still be sporatic, because this doesnt solve the economy.

No doubting that this made the expectations of the Wings a repeat, and Detroit loves a winner. They have offically usurped the Pistons position, and if the Tigers miss the Playoffs, they will surely be number one in the D again.

Heck yeah! I would pay a couple hundred to see Hossa play with Dats and Z. I am really aiming for opening nite when they raise the banner! I would love to see the Wings play anyone in the Central this next year. I have a feeling with the hawks under new leadership that team is going to turn around, and the hawks/wings games have always been fun to watch. I have seen the Wings play in Chicago twice, but not in Detroit. I would love to see the Wings whoop the Hawks in Detroit. I have only seen an exhibition game in Detroit, against the Sabers. I have however have seen Notre Dame play a BUNCH of times here in South Bend.

Yeah, it's not like the fan base isn't interested, just that times are tough. It seems like no one's buying cars right now.

One free agent signing isn't going to change the economic climate in SE Michigan. It's still too expensive for the average family here to go to a game. There may be a buzz but it will fade once the season starts.

I'm going to a game for the first time ever next season. It has nothing to do with winning the cup/free agent signings. 21 years as a fan and my brother is finally treating me to a game :D

At the very least I want to go to Anaheim to see them play the Ducks. Not a big fan of the Staples Center as it's almost 40 more miles further, high parking costs and a-hole ushers. I have some Kings fans for friends who are pretty cool, so maybe we could all go. My ultimate goal is to fly out to Detroit to see a couple of games at the Joe.

San Diego used to have the Gulls minor league team but they folded in 2006. Have to go to Anaheim to see hockey live and in person.

Nope, Crosby wouldn't fill the seats in Detroit. Unless companies move back to Michigan, and gas drops 2 dollars.

I'm trying my best to go to home opener but my work schedule might say otherwise.

Doubt it, our success and big signings will probably yield less actual attendance than ever. As long as this team does well (imho) ticket prices aren't really going to move too much, hell they could probably raise them and still "sell" every seat.

Having said that, the problem isn't that weren't not selling out, the problem is getting all of the people that bought the tickets to show up. With all of the corporate accounts and online ticket brokers pony'ing up to buy season packages now think how many more will keep hopping on the bandwagon to make a buck.

Example: I got free tickets to a game in the Dallas series from a friend's business, he said his boss walked into his office and plopped 4 tickets on his desk and told him to have a good time because he didn't have any clients in town to give them to so he had no use for them. So with people like that holding season tickets its no surprise to me why there are some vacant seats.

They should just start making people take blood oaths before they sell them season packages. That ought to weed out the weak links!

Here sir *hands them a paring knife* now if you could just remove the tip of any finger you please and kindly write "Steve Yzerman rules me" 20 times on the corresponding lines we'll get that ticket package finalized and you'll be all set.

For some people, the ticket price is only about half the cost of going to a game. Gas prices, parking, and vending prices almost equal 2 tickets to watch a game at the JLA. Even if someone plopped tickets on my desk, I'd only be able to make a couple games a season with all the other misc costs.

Lowering ticket prices will bring more people in - plain and simple.
