The Washington Capitals have re-signed forward Sergei Fedorov to a one-year $4 million contract.

The 17-year NHL veteran, a trade deadline acquisition from the Columbus Blue Jackets, was a key member of the Capitals improbable run to the playoffs last season.

In the final 18 regular season games, Fedorov contributed two goals and 11 assists and chipped in with five points in Washington's seven-game, first-round loss to the Philadelphia Flyers.

The 1993-94 Hart Trophy winner is the highest scoring Russian-born player in NHL history, amassing 472 goals and 674 assists in 1196 career NHL games.

I would rather have Fedorov, but Naslund has been producing more....

Given the market, not a bad deal for Fedorov, but certainly highlights to me why he will never be a Red Wing again.

To some he is overpaid. To others he is just right.

Personally, I think 3 million was just right. 4 million is over. 2 million is under. Just my .02 cents.

Good signing for Washington though.

Fedorov is worth closer to $4m than Kris Draper is to $2.5m or Rob Blake is to $5m...who is overspending?

Yup,

Draper: 17 points at 2.5 mill 147,000/pt

Fedorov: 41 points at 4.0 mill 100,000/pt (based on last year's stats and this year's salary)

Both play very good defense and both are very overpaid. Having said that, there's a better chance that Fedorov can improve upon his numbers from last year since he'll be playing with Ovechkin. Draper will be in a defensive role and won't be expected to score.

Feds is overpaid, but not terribly overpaid, imo.

Good deal for the Caps: Feds will be mentor for AO, Semin, Backstrom. He can still show great hockey, can be used as Dman. This one - year deal won't kill Washington.

I like this comparison for some reason.

Jiri Hudler: $1,015,000 salary 07-08 with 42 points is $24,166.67 per point.

Sammy: $1,200,000 salary 07-08 with 41 points is $29,268.29 per point.

But to stay on topic, Feds has those intangibles that can't be quantified on the stat sheet. I would be willing to bet that his presence on that team will help Ovechkin become an even more dangerous 2-way player, and his playoff experience will be invaluable to them as well.

Draper isn't just about points. He's a clutch faceoff man (arguably best in the league), a teriffic penalty killer and he's been with the Wings for FOUR Stanley Cups making him a clear fan favorite. Draper at 2.5 is just fine by me with his level of contribution.

I think $4 million looks like a lot due to Fedorov's production over the past few years, but that's only due to expectations from him. If you only look at his production compared to others in the league making $4 million, it doesn't look that bad. Also, Fedorov's worth goes way beyond offensive production, it always has, but even more so now.

Fedorov is almost as good as Draper on faceoffs.

He's as good or better defensively and on the PK.

He's bigger, stronger, and more physical.

He has more offensive skills and knowledge, by a WIDE margin.

Fedorov can play any position in any situation, Draper can play center or occasionally wing and can do it at even strength or shorthanded.

Over 82 games, based on production last season, Fedorov would have out-produced Draper by about 30 points. This includes many games where Fedorov spent the entire game playing defense. By comparison, many on LGW feel Johan Franzen and Val Filppula are worth between $2.5m to $3.5m. Neither brings close to the offense Fedorov does OR the defense he does, or for that matter the defense or speed he does. Yet he is overpaid at $4m?

Doesn't matter if they are overpaid or if Eva is overpaid. Blah, blah...4 million for Fedorov is yet another stupid signing this off season. Caps must have money to burn.

What kind of mentor does Ovechkin need? He's arguably the best offensive player in the world. He's proven he can shoulder a big load at a young age. He's atop the leader board in goals, points. He's fiery, has passion.

He needs a mentor like Scotty Bowman needs a mentor.

Fedorov is almost as good as Draper on faceoffs. This is an ass backwards way of saying Fedorov isn't as good at faceoffs as Draper. b/c he isn't.

He's as good or better defensively and on the PK. NOT!

He's bigger, stronger, and more physical. NOT!

Yeah, and if I won the mega millions I'd quit my day job.

You damn skippy he's overpaid at 4 million. Does that mean Jeff Finger isn't overpaid? Of course not. But try to keep up and stay on topic. The guy is overpaid. And so is Draper for that matter.

By the way

Draper is more physical

Draper is faster

Draper is more durable

Draper is better at faceoffs

I'd rather spend 2.5 mil for what he brings than 4 mil for what Fedorov brings

People always talk about Fedorov's intangibles. You know what, they have a point b/c that's all you can talk about with him anymore. For all of his offensive knowledge and wisdom and speed that you brag about...he hasn't done s*** in the past few years.

f***** played 68 games last season to the tune of a whopping 30 points. OooohhhhH! So impressive. He was still a minus player even when he went to the Caps, played with good players on a super hot team. He hasn't been a plus player since he left Detroit in 2003.

He's going to be 39 years old this season. I swear, the guy is going to be 42 years old and still playing and people will still say he's "physical, fast, yadda, yadda..."

He's at the end. Luckily for him he's so damned talented he still has something to offer. But still having something to offer does not make you an elite player anymore no matter how much sunshine you want to blow up his ass.

He's a less than 1/2 a point player per game. He's lost a step. He isn't anymore phsyical than jiri Hudler is.

If I am the Caps I give him 3 mil based upon his knowledge and experience and remaining ability.

But he's still overpaid at 4 million freaking dollars.

The same people said Steve Yzerman didn't need a mentor either. Yet, Bowman helped make him a complete 2 way player. Ovechkin needs that kind of mentoring as well in addition to other things.

What if Feds has 90 points this season playing with OV, which can totally happen, than everybody says it's a steal at $4 mil and all sudden everybody will want him back to Detroit! :)

I'm still smiling when I think how many people here said Datsyuk at $6.7 too much money for so long. :) Realistically it's a steal comparing what Briere, Gomez, Drury and some other players are getting.
