Need Help

I'll be honest and say that I'm a little embarassed that I have to ask this, but I need a little help in remembering the forward lines and defensive pairings for the three Stanley Cup teams prior to this year, mostly the first two. Part of my ignorance on this subject is because of my age during these championship seasons (7,8, and 12) and the fact that I wasn't really focused on the fourth line matchups as much as I was constantly trying to find #19 on the ice. I'm not asking for any other reason than to satisfy my own curiousity as my understanding of the game is much more advance at age 18 than it was at age 7, 8, and 12.

So, can anyone help me out here?

I won't even try to remember '97 and '98, but here's my best shot at '02.

'02:

Fedorov - Yzerman - Shanahan

Holmstrom - Larionov - Robataille

Maltby - Draper - McCarty

Devereaux - Datsyuk - Hull

Lidstrom - Olausson

Chelios - Fischer

Dandenault - Duchesne

Hasek - Legace

Close?

I'm with you on not remembering the lineups (and I was 2 years older for each team). But if you are close, the thought of a team having Brett Hull and Pavel Datsyuk on the 4th line is mind-blowing even at their ages (young and old). That team was staccccked.

Yeah, I don't remember if they were playing fourth line minutes or whatever, but I do remember Hull pairing up with Datsyuk and Devereaux during 5-on-5 matchups. However, on PPs, Hull played with Yzerman, Shanahan, Fedorov, and Lidstrom IIRC.

Well, here's my best guess on the '97 lines, because I'm bored and have nothing better to do. I'm just looking at the playoff games played at Hockey-Database and combining what I know (Grind Line + Russian 5) with complete guesses.

Shanahan - Yzerman - McCarty

Kozlov - Larionov - Fedorov

Maltby - Draper - Kocur

Lapointe - Sandstrom - Brown

Lidstrom - Murphy

Fetisov - Konstantinov

Rouse - Ward

Vernon - Osgood

You got our 4th and 2nd line mixed up. I know this because I remember Robitallie had one of the highest goals scored per minute, and seeing as him and Hull scored the same amount Robitallie must have been on the 4th line.

Besides that 02 looks as I remember it also.

The 97 and 02 ones posted look right

98:

Shanahan-Yzerman-McCarty

Holmstrom-Fedorov-Brown

Kozlov-Larionov-Lapointe

Maltby-Draper-Kocur

Lidstrom-Murphy

Fetisov-Mironov

Rouse-Macoun

Osgood-Hodson

Gilchrist, Dandenault, Knuble, Ward and Eriksson were also on the team, but I believe the above were the startes for majority of the games. I remember Gilchrist played in some games cause Stevie was talking about him playing with his groin torn .

Sandstrom and McCarty should be reversed, otherwise it's correct.

Eriksson was the #4 defenseman on the team and played in the spot you have Mironov listed in. Mironov was SUPPOSED to play there, but bombed horribly as a Wing and ended up only seeing spot duty in the postseason after playing in the All-Star game as a Duck that same season.

I have a hard time ever remembering Sandstrom on the top line in '98... But I guess it may be true.

98 no, i don;t think he was even on the team

but in 97 he definitly played a lof of the time on Yzerman's wing...

you can't read a huge amount into it though, as Bowman would constantly change lines looking for favourable matchups

Sandstrom left the team in the summer of 97. He was a rental acquired from Pittsburgh for Greg Johnson. He was possibly the team's least effective forward in the postseason despite playing prime minutes; there's a good chance NOT trading for him might have been better in the long run.

...there were no set lines, besides Doug Brown WAS NOT 4th line...

...Brown was more important to this team than FagCarty (that is why Kocur was part of the grind line, and prior to that, LaPointe was) so if anyone was 4th line it was him...

...McCarty = Waste of roster position then as well as now...

...yeah, considering the player Greg Johnson turned out to be! Man I wish he could have stayed around for those Cups...

That might be the most clueless comment in the history of LGW.

Without guys like McCarty, the Wings wouldn't have won any Cups. You need guys like that for grit in the playoffs.

And now we have a new most clueless comment...

While McCarty gave valuable contributions, to say we wouldn't have won ANY Cups without him is, simply put, retarded.

Settle down, Beavis.

I didn't say we couldn't win without him. I said we couldn't win without guys like him. You just overreacted too soon or misread my post.

Sounds like another anti-enforcer comment to me. :D

Um... Wtf... How is this relevant? These kind of comments will completely derail the entire topic and serve absolutely no purpose.

...it's relevant because, Doug Brown was more important to those 2 Cup teams than McCarty was. Period. And to suggest that Doug Brown was a 4th liner and McCarty was a top liner is absolutely assinine...

...Who tied the Washington game when we were severely outplayed? And on a completely individual effort? Exactly. Anyhow back to the original topic...

...yeah, McCarty sucks...

...uh, Joe Kocur? Marty Lapointe? Bob Rouse? Vladdy? We had plenty of gritty players, we didn't need McCrappy then and we didn't need him last year...

...Aaron Downey can more than be the grit we need. Hopefully he gets tons of playoff time next year and McCarty can go back to Flint...

..all I was saying is that no way Brown is on a lessor line than McCarty, even though there were no set lines combos with Bowman, so at anytime, anyone was with anyone...

Gotta love all the love for McCarty going on in this thread, but wasn't this supposed to be about the old red wings line ups?
