Bowman named Senior Advisor to Blackhawks

This isn't a big deal, since he's left several franchises before after long periods of service.

I never did understand what his position was with the Wings lately, or how much he contributed to this team's management the last couple of years.

For me, we lost Bowman when he retired in 2002. All of your reactions are misplaced and unnecessary.

it's never a good thing when the greatest hockey mind ever leaves your organization in a role where he's basically handing out advice to go to your rival to turn their franchise around.

Let me know when Lidstrom becomes captain of the divealanche.

Until then, I won't worry about losing a hockey mind to a rival organization.

It is bad that he's going to a division rival.

I have to think that his son is a HUGE factor in this, especially if he is battling cancer.

It's good for the Hawks because it's another major hope for them turning that franchise around. That's also good for the NHL.

Just not that good for the Wings.

The Detroit Free Press, June 24th:

"An unsourced report out of St. Louis had Bowman joining his son Stan in Chicago as director of player personnel. Stan is the team's assistant general manager for hockey operations. 'I don't know anything about that,' Scotty Bowman said this evening. 'As long as I'm healthy and there's no change in ownership in Detroit, there'll be no change. I'm perfectly satisfied.'" - Detroit Free Press

I don't understand why he would say that.

Un frickin Believable. Oh well, I can see him wanting to work with his son. I absolutely hate the Blackhawks. Thanks for the memories Scotty, of course I gotta admit now i'm really gonna love it when the Wings beat the Hawks this year.

Ehh maybe him and his son sat down and had a chat and Scotty realized that he really would like the chance to work with him. Hes earned the right to do whatever job he pleases no matter what he has told the press.

What kind of role did he have within the organization as of today? Like same as yzerman or what?

To be perfectly honest, I can understand him wanting to go work with his son, he doesn't have to move far either. At the same time, though, what the hell! The guy has said AAAALLLLL summer that he is happy where he is and that he doesn't want to go anywhere else and yada yada yada. Don't say that s*** so much when rumors come up about you going somewhere else, especially when you are more than likely planning on moving on.

It's sad that he is going to go, I wish him luck, but I am pretty irked about this news.

He just watched hockey and gave his opinion, his role was really passive.

While this may look worse than it is, losing Bowman at this time isn't really that much of a loss at all. He was a good sounding board for Babcock and I'm sure the front office learned a lot from him over the years but he didn't make any decisions for the Wings nor was he someone that our success hinged on.

Seems like his role will be almost exactly the same in Chicago, watch the games, doing a little scouting and give his opinion.

Farewell, Scotty, we'll always have 1997 . . . and 1998 . . . and 2002.

Part of me is very happy about this because I was more than a little sick of seeing Dollar Bill keep grinding the 'Hawks into the ground. It appears that Rocky is far more serious about winning than the old man ever was. A strong team in Chicago is A Good Thing for the NHL. It would also be nice to have a team in the division that mattered.

s***ty.

at the same time, who would pass up an opportunity later in life, to work side by side with your boy. I didn't need to read anything past his son working for the hawks to know exactly why he made the call.

Good luck Mr. Bowman. Your time with the wings does not go underappreciated. And there are no hard feelings.

And there are no hard feelings.

Agreed. I have no hard feelings, none, about Scotty going to Chicago. Also, I was unaware, untill I read this discussion, that he'll have the opportunity to work with his Son. I think that's great!

...Bowman, OUT! Take McCarty with you! Good for nothing, how could you turn your back on the WINGS! (trumpets blare) and how could you go to the Hawks, thine enemy of the WINGS (trumpets blare)

....:sarcasm: Good luck Scotty, thanks for the 4 Cups! I know I know he only coached 3, but he was still very influential on last years team, so heck lets give him a little credit!

...BTW, since it is traditon in Detroit, when you leave the WINGS (trumpets blare) you will now have to get booed everytime you touch the puck. Uh, whatever it is you'll be touching, expect to get booed, because nobody shoudl ever leave... you guessed it, THE WINGS (trumpets blare!)
