haroldsnepsts 4,826 Report post Posted August 26, 2008 (edited) Beyond just his playing years with the Hawks and captaining that team, Chelios was born and raised in Chicago and played hockey there as a kid until moving to southern California in high school. Even though he played almost as long in Detroit and Montreal, Chicago was his youth, and his prime NHL years. It's no surprise he'd have thoughts of returning. VM1138 1,921 Report post Posted August 26, 2008 It's a shame. I guess I always assumed he'd retire a Wing, but I understand why he thinks Chicago is home. I hope he doesn't play for the Hawks, though.
LeftWinger 5,153 Report post Posted August 26, 2008 (edited) ...this is stupid! He was interviewed IN Chicago by a Chicago news reporter OF COURSE he's gonna say that he wouldn't mind returning one day! He also said he found a NEW home in Detroit, but Chicago will always be "Home." Well, guess what, Ottawa will always be "Home" to Stevie and guess where he retired, his NEW home, bet when asked a few hundred times about the possibilty of coming home and playing in Ottawa, guarantee Yzerman said stuff similar to Chelios, it would be cool, it would be nice to play where he grew up, but Detroit is his NEW home... ...Chelios is being politically correct when answering the reporters questions. No need to piss off what little fans you have left in your "Hometown." Edited August 26, 2008 by LeftWinger
daniel1 32 Report post Posted August 26, 2008 I think the Wings should trade him to Chicago for Patrick Kane. ... and a 2nd rounder.

YoungGuns1340 1 Report post Posted August 26, 2008 This could be more of an opportunity than anything. The Wings can sign Chelios, and if guys like Ericsson and Quincey really prove their worth, Chelios could find himself fairly low on the food chain, and something like this would likely facilitate a mid-season trade between Chicago and Detroit. Especially since Chicago's young captain has less than a seasons worth of experience in the NHL, ZERO playoff experience, and very little veteran presence on the roster to speak of that can help him out. NeverForgetMac25 483 Report post Posted August 26, 2008 Chelios has been one of my favorites since he was dealt here, but that doesnt change the fact I wouldnt be able to look at him again if he re-signed in Chicago. I really dont think it will happen though, Chicago are far from contending and needing veterans, but if Cheli stays around for a couple more years, who knows. They're really not as far as you think. They're not gonna challange Detroit for the top seed in Division or anything, but they've already made some major strides this year and this offseason. With the addition of Bowman and the new players that team is making its way in the right direction. It'll be really nice to have that rivalry heat up again. It sure meant alot to me back in the early 90's.

Based on their increasing success in the league, and like you said-- some key moves in the last couple years, Chicago will become a contender within a couple years. Even more exciting, like you said, there's a possible rivalry there, seeing as Chicago has showed up to play the Wings in the last couple seasons. If they're able to get in stride, this will prove to be a very interesting match-up in upcoming years.
dobbles 252 Report post Posted August 26, 2008 That's exactly what he'll do next year, and those ******* moronic Blackhawk "fans", who spit on the idea of showing those losers hardware most of them haven't had a sniff of, save for 1991 (or was it 1992?). Keep rooting for the Cubs... don't get cubs fans confused with blackhawk fans. us cub fans are a tortured group of souls. we don't get to smack talk as none of us were alive the last time we won the world series. regarding chelios, i think if he wants to go to chicago, now is a good time. his role with the wings has finally diminished to where chicago might have more to offer him as a player. but i personally see him doing as others have suggested, signing a $1 contract so he can retire as a hawk and join their organization. but they do have lots of young d men that might benefit from having him around. also, i agree with those that say he was probably just playing to the media. heck, everyone loves to bring out that video of him hating detroit, yet he had no problem playing here. he just said what hawks fans wanted him to say. Kp-Wings 3 Report post Posted August 27, 2008 What's to stop Chris Chelios from demanding a trade to Chicago himself? ...heh, I couldn't resist. It's been a while since we've had a "what's to stop Chris Chelios" joke on here, so I thought it was time to bring it up again. Man, I miss sirdrake... Opie 308 Report post Posted August 27, 2008 I think Chelios is awesome. I still think he should retire though. To me the two aren't mutually exclusive. I am pretty sure that if this is the case GMR is referring to other people, because many many people have trashed his play since the cup was won!
haroldsnepsts 4,826 Report post Posted August 27, 2008 I am pretty sure that if this is the case GMR is referring to other people, because many many people have trashed his play since the cup was won! Well, it's somewhat the same thing. He's a warrior to even be playing at his age, but his level of play has dropped enough that it would be better to go out with the Cup win than to be a 7th d-man playing half the season. He was pretty bad against Dallas, but it's hard to tell if that was legitimately injury or he just had nothing left in the tank.

GMRwings1983 8,804 Report post Posted August 27, 2008 That's completely unrelated. sirdrake was the ultimate Chris Chelios fan. Don't you remember? It wasn't just sirdrake. There were plenty of posters who at this time last year were overjoyed at how amazing Chelios' performance was in the playoffs, and how they wanted him to play till he's 50. Everyone wanted to see Holland give him a life tenure. Where are those posters now?
dobbles 252 Report post Posted August 27, 2008 though i am not one of those people you speak of, i think that perhaps adding stuart into the equation certainly changes the dynamic. he slots everyone down and makes it harder the keep cheli. additionally, i think there was a lot of positives in the young guys play when we had all those injuries. helped show that these young guys can play at a similar level as cheli/lebda/lilja.
