SouthernWingsFan 854 Report post Posted August 29, 2008 (edited) A lot of us have probably heard or read this more or less during the offseason but thought I'd post a formal/official confirmation that is in righting. Mods, merge with other threads if necessary. http://www.detnews.com/apps/pbcs.dll/artic...1128/sports0103 Don't shoot the messenger... The Wings will be over the salary cap when they re-sign Chelios and Quincey, and will need to trade a player (likely a young defenseman such as Quincey or Derek Meech) before the regular season begins. The above quoted is something I would rather not see happen even though I don't mind seeing Chelios back in a limited role that's been defined and understood during the offseason, but it's not like the Wings aren't loaded on defense already, so if the above happens with one of those two guys, I'll live... Kp-Wings 3 Report post Posted August 30, 2008 As if it's been stated enough, but I'll say it again anyways, 'cuz I'm bored: one of the young guys is not going to get the Wings under the salary cap. It has to be someone who makes a fairly decent salary that would actually be shedding money. I don't know why these bloggers are so afraid to say Lilja's name out-loud to be moved; he's not Jesus on skates (he can't be, because Mikael Samuelsson is ). Opie 308 Report post Posted August 30, 2008 What if Lilja decides to go 'Viking' on Chelios/Quincey/Lebda/Meech, and beats any one, or all of them to a bloody pulp in the fall camp?
wingnut40 176 Report post Posted August 30, 2008 I thought my idea of not paying Fil 3 million a year to be on the 3rd line was good, but oh well. I'd rather not see either of them go. If I had to pick I'd lose Lebda.

58Miles2Joe 12 Report post Posted August 30, 2008 it might not be idiotic since we have really strong prospects coming up through the ranks. If we trade, for instance, Lilja for 1st round picks or a solid offensive prospect, we'd be getting deeper for the class coming after the Quincys and Ericssons. Thereby we're good today, good tomorrow and might be better the day after that, so to speak.

Agreed, but you and I both know the Wings value this "veteran leadership" cliche like it's gold. Chelios will be here until he decides to quit, because Ken Holland isn't going to get rid of him. Any player who is worse than the guy who many consider to be a washed up old man will go back to GR or be traded or lost to waivers. If they can go back to GR, great. I'd rather see them traded than lost to waivers. That last paragraph was the emotionally unattached businessperson in me. The real me wants to keep all of them. See my sig. I'm less than thrilled of possibly trading Quincey or Meech as the original article suggested, but when you put it that way, along with the fact that the Wings are already stacked as it is on defense, it doesn't sound as bad. And remember February people? Depth on defense is never a bad thing.

Why is it that professional sportswriters fail to understand the simple concepts regarding the salary cap that I have explained repeatedly in my posts on this subject...trading a player when you are over the cap by more than the player makes does not provide cap relief unless you make additional moves. If that player makes at or close to the league minimum, then it cannot be considered cap relief as the team plans to carry 23 players which means if not him, they will be carrying someone at his salary or higher. Cicada 4 Report post Posted August 30, 2008 idiotic. So we trade a young defeseman to make way for a 46 year old who we didnt need to win stanley cup? gotta disagree there... we'll likely trade Lebda, Meech or Qunicey and lets be honest, none of them are ever going to be better than bottom pair defensemen, and will likely be gone as soon as Ericsson, Kindl and Smith lose their waiver eligibility.... losing one of them to bring back Chelios isn;t the end of the world

Guest Shoreline Report post Posted August 31, 2008 Lilja is not the kind of guy to pick on non-fighters. Just, one of these days Lilja will end up checking a linesman while the player he's defending flies past with the puck and scores on a breakaway due to his apparent short attention span. As for Chelios and McCarty, uhm.. trade 1 or 2 young players for some rock songs and a bowl of chili?

I read both smith and kindl are first rounders while the other two are drafted late but are older and have more experience as of today... hm? It's pretty likely Smith and Kindl will be better than Meech and Quincey will ever be but right now Meech and Quincey are NHL-ready players. You can't really say that for neither Smith nor Kindl. Kindl maybe next year, Smith in 2-3 years.
eva unit zero 271 Report post Posted August 31, 2008 Because players will come off the payroll as they're sent to GR. I know you think we need to trade Lilja but you're wrong. The Wings currently have 22 players signed who cannot be sent down without clearing waivers. This does not include contracts for McCarty, Chelios, or Quincey. The Wings, with only these 22 contracts included, are only $400k under the cap. The Wings intend to carry 23 players, the roster limit. The NHL minimum salary is $475k. Please explain to me how the Wings will be getting out of this situation if not by clearing cap space, which CANNOT BE DONE BY REMOVING MINIMUM SALARY DEFENSEMEN such as Meech. Here; I'll detail it for you. We'll assume that Chelios, McCarty and Quincey are signed to league minimum deals since they are unsigned. This pushes the Wings to 25 players; which is 2 over the roster limit and 1.025m over the cap with 14 forwards, 9 defensemen, and 2 goalies. We'll assume that McCarty, the worst forward, is waived and sent down. This puts the Wings with 13-9-2 at about 625k over the cap. Please, oh wise one, tell me who gets sent down to Grand Rapids next that gets the Wings under the cap? Would it be Meech and his 483k cap hit? How about Chelios or Quincey with their 475k hits? Lebda with his 650k cap hit would do it, but would leave the Wings butting right up against the cap. Oh, I know; is there a defenseman who makes more than Lebda, Meech, or Quincey and is competing with them for a position? Why yes, yes there is. Andreas Lilja, and his 1.25m cap hit. Please stop wasting bandwidth by forcing me to re-explain this to you over and over.
