MacK_Attack 108 Report post Posted September 4, 2008 The Montreal Canadiens are in preliminary talks with the management of the Olympic Stadium in Montreal, attempting to organize an outdoor game on Dec. 4, 2009, the 100th anniversary of the founding of the Canadiens. NHL approval of the game would be a mere formality. The Canadiens would be expected to play against the Maple Leafs or Ottawa Senators.

Detroit # 1 Fan 2,204 Report post Posted September 4, 2008 Ottawa or Toronto? I mean they have alot of hockey history and all, obviously, but giving Montreal a free win isnt fair. I dont even think they deserve an outdoor game, the "100 year anniversery" bull is starting to get old, and the season hasnt even started yet!

I dont even think they deserve an outdoor game, the "100 year anniversery" bull is starting to get old, and the season hasnt even started yet! What are you talking about? Nobody is giving anyone a free win. Montreal is in the same division as Ottawa and Toronto, and they HAVE to play each other. I am not sure I understand your point. P.S. The 100 year anniversary IS a big deal. They have by far been the best hockey franchise ever, and playing for a century is pretty impressive. If anyone deserves an outdoor game, its Montreal or Toronto.

What happens when the rest of the original 6 gets to their 100th season?

shoe 165 Report post Posted September 4, 2008 Montreal has already played an outdoor game in Edmonton I like the winter classic idea I just dont like that Detroit dosnt get to play at home for it, so my thinking is this let Montreal have their outdoor game at home then Detroit can start pushing for a game at the Big House in Ann Arbour. Hey Montreal got 2 so we want 2 fair is fair no?

Hey Montreal got 2 so we want 2 fair is fair no? I would love to see a "Cold-War 2" at Michigan Stadium. It would probably have to wait until 2010 when the renovations at U of M are completed. But a Wings/Avs or Wings/Leafs game at U of M would be great.
lfd250 1 Report post Posted September 4, 2008 Man, are you guys bitter about Montreal or just don't like them? What are you going to do when Phoenix wants the sweatwar 2010 Vegas vs Phoenix? I love the wings as much as you do, and wish they would have had this years outdoor game, but come on, 100 years is huge. What other team in sports has been around that long? Took the words right out of my mouth. You'd think with the bitterness in this thread that a team like Florida or Nashville was hosting an outdoor game in the middle of July. Could you imagine Wings/Avs at the big house. that would be epic, Mostly because a- Downey/Lappy last year... b- our blowout of them in the playoffs.... c- Deep down inside, eveyr wings and Aves player knows this was a rivalry and each player wants to win this game that much more.. d- i'd be primetime, alot of media coverage.. alot of people talking to mccormick, lappy, mcleod, the sherrif trying to get them started in on tryingto start up the rivalry again or something. I'd just love a Det/Col game at the big house, i just couldn't imagine 106,000 people standing at there feet, with hate and disgust for the aves.. i'd be a sight for sore eyes. The only reason this hasn't happened at a college stadium like the Big House is because of the alcohol rules. There is no alcohol allowed to be served there which is a huge turnoff for a lot of people. Personally, I don't mind it. However this has been discussed before by the NHL and the NCAA. The NCAA won't allow it so the NHL really has no choice but to look at professional ball parks and football stadiums. A Cold War 2 with Michigan/Michigan State at the Big House would be awesome! I would much rather have a game against a team that people hated still if we were to host one. Toronto, Anaheim, Chicago, St Louis, Calgary and hell even San Jose and Nashville would be on a list of teams I would put before Colorado. The rivalry is dead, this wasn't Michigan/Ohio State, the Cup isn't determined by these two teams anymore. If the Joe didn't sell out against a game against the Av's in the playoffs then the rivalry is gone. Yzerman, Shanahan, Fedorov, Kocur, Lapointe, Roy, Lemieux, Bourque, Blake and all those other gritty players are gone. It's over. This past playoffs solidified it. MacK_Attack 108 Report post Posted September 4, 2008 (edited) We have the best chance of getting the cup in our 100th year. Isn't that like 20 years away? The Leafs as a franchise have the next centennial, which is 2017, but I doubt they'll do anything until 2027, when the Maple Leafs name/the purchase of the team by Conn Smythe is 100 years old. For whatever reason, they tend to act like the Toronto Arenas/St. Patrick's weren't the same team as the Maple Leafs. MacK_Attack 108 Report post Posted September 4, 2008 (edited) The Canadiens are now saying that if they have an outdoor game next season, it will not be on December 4th, as their 100th anniversary game will definitely take place at the Bell Centre. At this point, it appears that scheduling is up to the group that runs the Olympic Stadium, as they have planned to replace the roof at Olympic Stadium (most people in Montreal would prefer they use dynamite to get the roof off) sometime in late 2009 or 2010. The game would take place during that time while the roof is removed from the stadium. Of course, this is all contingent on the Olympic Stadium not falling down between now and then, which is always a possibility.
