j.hoop 64 Report post Posted September 19, 2008 Flyers D Hatcher likely out for season http://www.tsn.ca/nhl/story/?id=249909&...s=headlines_nhl Philadelphia, PA (Sports Network) - Flyers defenseman Derian Hatcher will be placed on the injured reserve for the start of the 2008-09 NHL season due to a to a possible career-threatening right knee injury. Flyers general manager Paul Holmgren announced on Thursday that Hatcher will not participate in the start of training camp Saturday and that the 36-year- old will take some time to contemplate retirement. "Due to the class and character of Derian, we believe that it is important to continue to let Derian try to make his way back and we will give him as much time as he feels necessary to make a decision, if in fact, a decision is coming in terms of retirement," Holmgren said. "As of right now he still wants to play. Presently, our doctors don't believe he can." Hatcher, a first-round pick -- eighth overall -- of the Minnesota North Stars in the 1990 draft, played in just 44 games with Philadelphia last season, his third with the club. He compiled two goals and seven points along with 33 penalty minutes. "It is something that has been talked about all summer long so it comes as no surprise," Hatcher said of starting the season on the sidelines. "But I guess now that it's official, it is a little bit tougher (to take). The Michigan native spent the first 12 years of his career with the Minnesota/Dallas franchise, and has recorded 80 goals, 251 assists and 1,581 PIM in 1,045 game with the Stars, Red Wings and Flyers. Yzerfan1999 81 Report post Posted September 19, 2008 (edited) Jeez. I barely remember the guy played for the Wings. How many games did he end up playing? Like a dozen? I remember a lot of people being pretty stoked when he signed here. Too bad it didn't work out. Edited September 19, 2008 by Yzerfan1999
puckloo39 5,686 Report post Posted September 19, 2008 that's too bad. He wasn't much help to the Wings and was a bit of a disappointment to some, but I hate to see any player go out like this. Best of luck, Hatch.

Aussie_Wing 354 Report post Posted September 19, 2008 (edited) I don't remember much during his time here, except for that terrible turnover against Nashville in the playoffs. He's a huge man, suffered an ACL injury early in the season, perhaps he shouldn't have played again that season. chrisdetroit 189 Report post Posted September 19, 2008 I don't remember him playing for the wings :S We signed him as a free agent in the summer. He blew out his knee early in the season and missed most of the year. Then we bought him out the year after the lock-out.

Hockeytown0001 7,652 Report post Posted September 20, 2008 That's too bad. I remember being excited when the Wings signed him over the summer, and we hardly ever got to see him; and he wasn't that good when in the lineup. If this is it for him, congrats to Hatch on a good career.
LidstromIsASuperhero 29 Report post Posted September 20, 2008 So is this knee injury related to the one h got here or is it completely different? I want to know the details on what a career ending knee injury is like with modern medicine and all. I mean, stevie y had some crazy knee surgery and he came back. Detroit # 1 Fan 2,204 Report post Posted September 21, 2008 That's too bad. Always liked Hatch, and thought what he did with one knee in the playoffs last year was admirable, although for the good of his career, probably shouldnt have.
