Read towards the bottom:

Sergei Gonchar, the Penguins’ top defenseman, left the game in the first period after a hit from David Koci. He didn’t return, and the Penguins didn’t provide information about his injury.

Wonder why they didn't release a statement. That could be a big loss if he is injured, but maybe it is just precautionary!

They did release this:

http://www.pittsburghlive.com/x/pittsburgh...=rss&feed=3

Injured Saturday on a hit by Tampa Bay forward David Koci in the Penguins' exhibition opener at Mellon Arena, Gonchar's left shoulder will undergo a Magnetic Resonance Imaging test sometime this week. He did not practice yesterday.

The Penguins will play Tampa Bay at 7:30 p.m at St. Pete Times Forum.

Losing Gonchar for an extended period of time - "just speculation" that general manager Ray Shero wanted no part of yesterday - would certainly make the Penguins' goal to repeat as Atlantic Division champions more difficult.

Man, the Pens are screwed.

Maybe they'll take Lilja.

That would be interesting. Of course, him and Godard would have to compete in essence for the same job. I think this would be a good way for Godard to prove that he is indeed a capable heavy in this league.

Of course, I'm still not condoning that we should under any circumstances get rid of Lilja.

The penguins had regular season losses, so they've already faced adversity and this will be no problem.

If this loss was at the F position I would be more inclined to agree with you, however they are not deep at all on D, however neither is most of the eastern conference. But you add to the fact that Whitney is already out with surgery, it looks shakey for their D to start!

Plus it looks like a separated shoulder and he will be back sooner rather than later.

Cicada's link:

The pre-season is barely underway, but one team already has a significant issue they will have to overcome at the start of the season. The Pittsburgh Penguins will open the 2008/09 season without the services of their two top defencemen. Ryan Whitney had surgery on his left foot in August and should be out three to five month and Sergei Gonchar suffered a separated should in Saturday’s pre-season opener against the Tampa Bay Lightning and should miss a few weeks. This is a significant blow to the Penguins. Likely, it will slow them out of the gate when the season opens. You cannot overcome two big defensive injuries like that with any ease.

Pittsburgh had a short summer, due to their appearance in the Stanley Cup finals, and that alone might have slowed their start. Injuries to their top two defencemen will make it even harder. Pittsburgh hopes that a young player like Alex Goligoski or Kris Letang will step forward and establish himself as a legitimate number one defenceman early in the season, but that probably cannot happen over night. All teams face bumps in the road over a long NHL season. Pittsburgh’s first one is coming very early.

I was only mocking cidney when he said that they had faced adversity akin to being 2-0 down in the Stanley Cup finals and yet to score because they had regular season losses. :D

You're right though, without gonchar they're lacking big at D, but I don't think he'll be gone too long.

We won't be trading for roster players, dude. Have you seen our cap numbers?

Draft picks then, idc, I just want to get rid of someone using up cap..
