DatsyukownzU13 1 Report post Posted October 8, 2008 I like reading and hockey so I figured it would be a good idea to read some books about hockey. The problem is, I don't really know of any single hockey books that are considered good books that I haven't already read. The one book about hockey that I did read was The Game by Ken Dryden, which was really good. Other than that I can't think of any books that I have heard talked about in regards to hockey. Any ideas? DyingAlive 27 Report post Posted October 8, 2008 (edited) I would highly recommend this book: http://www.amazon.com/Hockey-Peoples-Histo...6710&sr=1-3 I bought it for my father last year for Christmas and it is a great hockey book. Also has great pictures. It's based off a CBC Series, so you know it's good stuff. Edited October 8, 2008 by DyingAlive

I also liked "What it Means to be a Red Wing" Bud Lynch's "My Life: From Normandy to Hockeytown" is okay. I was hoping it would have more stories about the game, but it is still a good read. auxlepli 17 Report post Posted October 9, 2008 Blood Feud is very good, Wings related, and very easy to read. Another one I really like is Boys of Winter. It's about the 1980 U.S. Olympic hockey team.

RedWingfaninCO 43 Report post Posted October 9, 2008 I agree with some of the above recommendations. "What It Means to Be a Red Wing" and "Blood Fued" are great reads.
pinkprincess027 0 Report post Posted October 9, 2008 I have read the Bruise Brothers book, What it Means to be a Red Wing, and Blood Fued, and I enjoyed all of them. I also have Heros of Hockeytown but I did not find that to be as good as What it Means to be a Red Wing, and I have not read the whole thing like I did with What it Means to be a Red Wing. What it Means to be a Red Wing has short stories from players from the 50's all the way to the present (no yzerman or howe)Chelios, Lidstrom, Datsyuk, Zetterberg, Lindsay, Delvecchio and many others about their time as a Red Wing. Heros of Hockeytown has a page of discription about players, but it's more from the author's perspective rather than the player's perspectives. The Red Wings have a book about Yzerman called 19 and there is a book about Howe called 9, I have not read either but as a Wings fan I plan to purchase both at some point. I think that the Yzerman book you can only get from the Red Wings I put the link below. I also have heard that Why is the Stanley Cup in Mario Lemieux's swimming pool is pretty entertaining. http://redwings.nhl.com/team/app/?service=...int_article_150
miller76 463 Report post Posted October 9, 2008 my wife last year somehow aquired an autographed copy of '9' Gordie Howe's book. Its excellent. Great stories and photos.
Tane 17 Report post Posted October 9, 2008 What about a Boy at the leafs Camp? Anybody else read that one? Yeah, I know it's Leafs, but It's a really good fiction hockey book. I remember reading it when I was in grade 5, and remember Loving every second of it. I'm more into biographies, or jsut Hockey story books, I like Hockey History Books....But a boy at the Leafs camp I just remeber it being So good. Granted I was 11 when i read this and I don't remember much about it, you might pick it up, and be done in a day and be sorry you wasted your time on it. I've actually thought about this book a few times lately, and this topic reminded me about it, so I jsut went on ebay and Snagged a copy. There are still a couple left at the time of this post, looks like they're 10$ a piece...I got the one that had the cheapest shipping to canada. Check it out, enjoy

55fan 5,133 Report post Posted October 9, 2008 (edited) Blood Feud is great. If you like the fighting aspect (or need it explained to you), I recommend The Code. If you don't get the whole fighting thing, the prefaces by McSorley and Twist will give you all you need to know. My only beef with it is that it's a bit tough to read as there are all these interview quotes interspersed with the text, often at places where you are required to either go back a page and catch them up, or stop reading in the middle of something to read the quotes. Other than that, pretty good book, but then, I love enforcers. Thanks to everyone for the suggestions. Christmas is coming, and they all say I'm hard to buy for. Drimo 0 Report post Posted October 9, 2008 I have been enjoying "King of Russia" by Dave King and Eric Duhatschek. King has coached several NHL teams and the book describes his experiences coaching in the Russian Super League. It puts a different perspective on playing hockey there so it is a good read. http://www.amazon.com/King-Russia-Russian-...6217&sr=8-
joshy207 156 Report post Posted October 10, 2008 The Rebel League, about the World Hockey Association of the 1970's. VERY interesting book, some great stories, that league was a true gongshow. http://www.amazon.com/Rebel-League-Unruly-...201&sr=1-22 The Rink: Stories from Hockey's Hometowns, about some older rinks in Canada and their role in those towns. Some nice history. Stories are told by some of the CBC broadcasters.

FedorovGurl 2 Report post Posted October 12, 2008 The Phil Esposito book (Thunder and Lightening) is one of my faves. It really gives you an insight into how things were done back then and how hockey has changed but also remained the same.
