NeverForgetMac25 483 Report post Posted October 13, 2008 These are the risks in playing hockey, especially at this level. Sucks to hear this. May he rest in peace. To be fair, this doesn't necessarily sound like it was a risk of playing hockey. I wonder if this kid had an internal problem that doctors never picked up on. Otherwise, this just doesn't make much sense.

betterREDthandead 58 Report post Posted October 13, 2008 I may be rumor-mongering, but I hear it may be "from non-incidental contact" with Jagr??? http://newyorktrueblue.wordpress.com/2008/...uring-khl-game/ Please feel free to delete this if I am out of line. Obviously a terrible tragedy. No way a normal, healthy person takes an elbow to the chest, even if it was a viciously savage blow (which it sounds like it was not), and it stops his heart. Chris Pronger took a 90-mph slap shot there that one time, and it knocked him down and fluttered his heart some, but he was OK. I hope nobody blames Jagr. Cherepanov is probably just the victim of the same sort of thing Fischer almost was. The real shame is the lack of proper medical attention, despite all the fabulous wealth that's supposedly behind the KHL. I bet it makes guys think twice about heading to Russia for the $$$ now. esteef 2,679 Report post Posted October 13, 2008 Not to feed the rumor flames but my wife was a respiratory therapist for a while and she said you can totally die from a shot like that in the chest. If you hit the right spot/bone if could certainly kill you. Just sayin'... esteef

Just sayin'... esteef Reports are out saying that he did collide with Jagr's elbow prior to collapsing and that Jagr was in tears, yelling "wake up, Alexei!!" It is truly heartbreaking that this happened. Hope Jagr is OK, too, even though it was a total accident and freakish, if in fact it had anything to do with the collision. bit more info Poor guys, all of them, who had to witness this. I thought of Sergei Zholtok just now, and how hard it was on his team-mates when he died in Latvia during the lockout. It's a risk they take, to play a game they love -- you simply never know when it's your time. Edited October 13, 2008 by puckloo39

12Newf 0 Report post Posted October 13, 2008 i agree that they should have those defibrillators at every sporting event. about 3 years ago i witnessed an 18 year old kid die during a soccer game. seems like this is a well-documented problem and that keeping people trained in their usage and a defib on hand at all times. the ambulance left? ridiculous, there must have been an emergency elsewhere though. r.i.p. alexei and i really hope this stuff about jagr comes back untrue.
