Personally, I wouldn't mind if they implemented one as long as it didn't bite a big one. I stumbled upon this blog (http://nhllogos.blogspot.com/search/label/red%20wings) that has a number of third and alternate options for Detroit. So, how about it? T.Low 1,011 Report post Posted October 16, 2008 While i do think that the black Wings practice jersey is awesome, I don't think they should have a 3rd game jersey. Alternate or 3rd Jerseys seem to be for teams trying to create more hype around their team. The Wings don't need more hype. Throwback or retro jerseys are for teams trying to create the fealing of nostalgia. The Wings are the epitome of living nostalgia, they are Original Six, and currently in the middle of a dynasty. There is so much history and legend behind the Wings jerseys. And whats more, is that there is nothing that can be done to a Wings jersey to improve upon the two they already have. I would feal let down if I went to one game a year, and it happened to be one when they were wearing the 3rd. The Wings have never had an alternate or third jersey, save for the 91-92 season when the NHL mandated that all O6 teams wear throwback jerseys to celebrate the league's 75th anniversary. What does it tell you, that in the 12 seasons that 3rd jerseys have been in the league, the Wings and the Devils are the ONLY teams to have never worn a third or alternate jersey? And I'm sorry, but that link provided for the suggested third jersey or alternate logos for the Wings? Anyone who thinks that THIS abomination would be a good way to "upgrade" the Wings' current logo cannot be taken seriously... The "Candy Cane" jersey that you're reffering to was actually worn by the Detroit Cougars for a resounding ONE TWO SEASONS, 1927-1928 & 1929-1930. It was used as the league-mandated throwback jersey for the Wings for the 91-92 season, so at MOST it has 3 years of "tradition" and "heritage" going for it. In all seriousness, just to show that I have somewhat of an open mind on this, I'm not completely against a 3rd jersey idea as long as it doesn't go off the deep end like the jersey in the pic above. Something simple like the Rangers jerseys of a diagonal name or what Pittsburgh had on their dark jersey in the early/mid 90s or even what the Avs did for their recent maroon 3rd jersey. The Wings don't need to bring themselves down to the level of other teams who change jersey's every two months, How many jersey's has Pittsburgh had in the last 4 or 5 years. If the Red Wings are going to use a third jersey, it better be the white ones with the red stripes that just say Detroit on them. Honestly, I understand that the logo itself should never be messed with, I totally agree with people on this. HOWEVER, there is zero reason for not coming out with a black 3rd jersey.
