The Secret 304 Report post Posted October 31, 2008 he really didn't decisively lose a fight last year, he may not be the greatest but he doesn't back down from anyone and does protect our players. There are plenty of worse fighters in the league then Downey and maybe 9 or so better. Avery as much as people may hate him really isn't known for being a cheapshot artist, everyone else on the list he is more intimidating then though. 11iscoming 1 Report post Posted October 31, 2008 I might be the only person on LGW that thinks this but I think Downey is just as usless as McCarty and Maltby. His hands are made of cement, he fights but not very well! Not sure what type of message swapping one pilon for another is going to send except we are desparate. I think we are all starved for an actual physical presence that Downey is as close as we have.... thats sad! Downey being in the line up will not change a thing... I think Pronger would dumby Downey personally and I can't see how he would intidate any other team in the league. I give Downey credit for dropping the gloves but he is a terrible fighter and a worse hockey player. Don't hate me for having a different opinion, I'm sure he is a great guy but I want to see some positive changes not different faces achieving the same results! no, you are not the only one! as much as i agree with most people here, that maltby and mccarty bring not very much to the team.... it wouldn´t get any better with downey. a good fighter/enforcer might bring some energy, but his skating and his hockey skills are far far far away from nhl standards, even for a fourth line. so bringing him up would do nothing to change the situation. guys like helm or abdelkader, with their forechecking pressure in the offensive zone, would help a lot more. but i think its not going to happen, cause of the cap issues. Superman54 91 Report post Posted October 31, 2008 Having an enforcer is definitely important, despite what some other posters here might say, who nod their heads like mindless idiots to everything Holland has ever said or done. That said, if this defense and the forwards (who are often praised for their defense) don't start playing better, the Wings will end the season as one of the league leaders for most goals allowed. There's no defensive responsibility out there at all right now. Mindless idiots? 4 cups the man has brought us, and we are mindless idiots.... By having just one enforcer out there will not change anyones approach against the Wings. Our team is not physically tough, thats not how we play! Having one guy might stop the goons from doing something stupid, but it won't stop them from laying the body. People make it sound as if we have Downey in the lineup we are all of a sudden, a puck possesion team, that as tough as f**k too. If it gets out of hand, then we need more change then just Downey, our whole fourth line would need too change into a grinding physicality role. Excellent post, the bolded points alone show what kind of attributes he can bring to a team on top of enforcing. He isn’t the best fighter but is better fighter (today) than McCarty who is useless (he can’t fight, hit, skate…) i'll have to agree with this. downey is the best we have. unfortunately, i just don't have confidence in him. i just can't imagine him going toe to toe with any serious fighter in this league. i agree that mccarty is not doing much at all, and what i'm about to say could be said of him as well, but what's the point of giving a roster spot to someone who can't play and is just going to give the other team momentum by losing a fight? still, that statement is more true of d-mac than it is of downey, which is why i agree that, while he isn't the answer, he is the best we have. What's the frickin dif? why is Downey a *****? if Downey didn't prove to Red Wings fans that he is capable of enforcing and capable of fighting quality opponents last year then there is no hope for you... you're more than likely just a negative person and always need something to ***** about. Roy, Shelley, Fedoruk, Walker, Parros are all legit heavyweights that Downey held his own with last year, there's about maybe 15 guys who I'd rank ahead of Downey on the NHL heavyweight list, that's not a bad ratio when you consider the amount he's better than, and half of those 15 are too slow to ever do some real damage through a hit. If the argument is that Downey can't skate then that's a whole different story, but to say he is a horrible fighter or a ***** is just plain dumb, you're dumb.
