FIGHT: Aaron Downey vs Jeff Cowan AHL

What a classy fighter. Notice how when Downey lays Cowan out he immediately stops punching and just lets Cowan try to resupport himself again. He could've knocked the guy out in such a helpless position, which is something many other fighters would do without even thinking about it.

That being said, I still prefer enforcers like Dave Brown or Bob Probert, who showed no mercy to anyone.

People were afraid of messing with someone on the team when they knew that a guy like that could pounce upon them at any minute with no mercy.

Yeah, I'm pretty sure Downey wouldn't have done that if Cowan or someone had taken a dangerous run at Haydar or Abdelkader into the boards. I guarantee mercy would not have been shown.

I'm ok with that opinion but looking at the fighting in the NHL (well ok, AHL in this case) as a whole, this kind of "classiness" is most likely a requirement for it to sustain. The minute players start to mess each other up too bad, with UFC-style KO's (bare-knuckled at that), head injuries etc, fighting will begin to lose its support. The realist in me regard Downey as a perfect example of today's NHL fighter.

Realism aside, I love him for his classiness and sacrifice and can't wait to see him back.

Edit: I also love him for his cool dialect. Is it canadian?

Bob Probert wasn't the kind of guy to keep wailing on a guy who was down, not sure what you guys are talking about there. But this is great to see from Downey. He really took strides as a fighter and was right on the cusp of cracking the top ten heavies in the NHL last season. I hope he sees some action.

Met him last month at the Griffins boosterclub meet & greet dinner, real nice guy. He talked with my girls and asked about how school was going and telling them to do a good job. Its great to have him in GR.

On halloween I met Aaron in Milwaukee at the Hilton. I was in town on business and did not realize GR was in town. I think he was surprised that someone in Milwaukee recognized him. He chatted with me for about 10 minutes, real nice guy and seemed very appreciative of me as a fan. I am sure he will be back with the big club soon.

Downey was on fox sports last night, I just watched it again. The key information I got from him is that he is that he is planning to be back in Detroit this year, and while he is in Grand Rapids he is enjoying encouraging the young kids.

It was a short interview, but here is what I took as the key quote from him

"I see myself actually playing this year in Detroit, hoisting another Stanley Cup, and see myself doing it again next year too in a Detroit Red Wings uniform. I don't see myself any other way. You are what you think about."

I like his optimism, and I feel like right now he is a better fighter than McCarty, if it is coming down to one or the other playing 3 minutes a night I would rather have Downey right now.
