Detroit # 1 Fan 2,204 Report post Posted November 13, 2008 Lidstrom is probably the most boring player in the NHL. He doesnt dazzle with speed, or a bomb from the point, ridiculous passes. He's just amazing at doing the little things, and the things a great defenceman does. That's what makes him great, he doesnt need to do anything spectacular looking on the ice. As far as the Wings go, at times, they can be boring to watch. In the regular season. If this guy is judging off the playoffs, he's a dumbass. Red Wings playoff hockey is probably the most exciting form out there.
betterREDthandead 58 Report post Posted November 13, 2008 Avery isn't famous. He is just talked about a lot. That sounds pretty close to a definition of famous right there.
RockyMountainWingGal 108 Report post Posted November 13, 2008 The first thing I notice is that this is under the NASCAR heading for some reason. That says it all right there. Watching cars drive in a circle for hours is exciting? I suppose the occasional one that blows up or crashes is exciting? This was humorous to read. Michael Phelps is boring? Did this idiot watch the 800 relay vs France? Maybe the most exciting Olympic swim event of all time? Whatever, he wants to watch cars drive in circles. Lidstrom is a kind of quiet champion. Yet Yzerman was too, so were champions like Mario, and Wayne. Methinks this idiot doesn't like hockey in the first place. So my advice is: don't write about it then. I'll take any hockey player in the league over one of his beer swilling, red neck, car drivers.
HockeyCrazy3033 168 Report post Posted November 13, 2008 Did he just use Wings and boring style of hockey in the same sentence? SERIOUSLY? What a joke.
stlwing14 0 Report post Posted November 13, 2008 Wings are boring? Compared to what? The breath-taking losing of Ottawa, Florida, or St. Louis? The jackass team called the Flyers? The loaded up but can win the whole thing New York Rangers? The often talked about but can't crack the third round Sharks? Gary Bettman's girlfriend Penguins' captain? The whole league is a bit more boring than say the mid-90's but then the game itself has changed. How can anyone follow Fox's glow puck? We knew once that was gone, the game was finished. I'll take classy D-man Captain and winning or exciting losing like we had the other night.

betterREDthandead 58 Report post Posted November 14, 2008 The first thing I notice is that this is under the NASCAR heading for some reason. That says it all right there. Watching cars drive in a circle for hours is exciting? I suppose the occasional one that blows up or crashes is exciting? The point is not the sport itself, the article talks about the people. Richard Petty and Dale Earnhardt did the same thing Jimmie Johnson does, but nobody would ever call them boring. Whereas Jimmie Johnson really is the Lidstrom of NASCAR, and vice versa. haroldsnepsts 4,826 Report post Posted November 14, 2008 (edited) Other guys on his list besides Lidstrom: Tiger Woods, Pete Sampras, Roger Federer, Michael Phelps. This guy apparently is more interested in drama that happens outside of the game than the drama inside a game. Because all of those athletes have had some pretty historic and incredible performances. As for this quote: The Detroit Red Wings' captain is a pleasant, exceedingly competent, soft-spoken gentleman -- which is exactly what you don't want in a freakin' hockey player! Does the guy actually watch hockey? That is exactly what you want in a hockey player. It's how the majority of them are! No matter how tenacious or nasty they play on the ice, most are talented, professional, and humble. Edited November 14, 2008 by haroldsnepsts
DatsyukownzU13 1 Report post Posted November 15, 2008 Hockey is only boring to people that don't understand it or make an effort to. As far as the whole nice guys are boring, it's pretty sad that our sports culture is completely based around what dance move X football player does to mock the other team and what trash talk X basketball/football player says about Y in public. Sean Avery is the only person that really fits into the category of this in hockey (i.e. why he is the only player talked about on all these lame websites like ESPN). I'll take classy individuals and competitors over the publicity anyday. The NHL has legit role models for kids (not that all other sports don't have some, it just seems like they are few and far in between).
seeinred 1,488 Report post Posted November 15, 2008 Nick Lidstrom is boring. There's nothing wrong with that, but he is the least flashy, least controversial player in a sport that doesn't have a lot of controversial characters. That takes some doing. Off the ice, sure (Which is why I was suprised that he drives a Bentley by the way). But on the ice, if you know what you're looking at anyway, he's one of the most exciting players to watch I think. His consistency, the one handed poke-checks, the batting of pucks out of mid-air, the crisp tape-to-tape passes? That's exciting stuff to me. If we win it all in a boring fashion, I'll take boring every time. This times a billion.
SouthernWingsFan 854 Report post Posted November 15, 2008 In terms of the article/journalist, he is right in the sense that Lidstrom is boring in terms of consistent play and not being outspoken or a drama queen off the ice. The journalist seems to be focused more on the "entertainment" and off-ice/off-playing surface part of games. Stories outside the game. That I disagree with. I like entertainment to a degree, but not to the point or you are a distraction in the locker room or create drama or or controversy where there's no point or reason to create drama. That is where I disagree with the journalist. I'm all about going about your business in a quiet fashion and just playing the game and doing your job. While I don't follow the NBA much anymore, back when guys like Jordan and Magic played, one guy I really liked and thought was an excellent role model in terms of how he presented himself on and off the court was John Stockton for the Jazz. Never created any drama, never really did much PR stuff in terms of "HEY LOOK AT ME!", just did his job, was a leader, and was one of the best at doing what he did, and was extremely humble. I think he is in a similar mold of leadership/play as Lidstrom.
Doc Holiday 0 Report post Posted November 15, 2008 That sounds pretty close to a definition of famous right there. He won't be hardly talked about once he retires. When you are famous your accomplishments are discussed for years. Gordie Howe for example. Avery's 15 minutes of fame will be up once he leaves the league.
