Opie 308 Report post Posted November 17, 2008 Anybody think this team is looking similar to the '08 Tigers? By means of trying to load up on all star players and not enough on defense or team chemistry? maybe too many egos in the locker room?? Before asking this question shouldn't we wait until the Wings record at least begins to resemble that of the tiger? Why worry now, simple so that if the Team doesn't win people can say, see I knew it all along. It is easier to predict doom and gloom and that the world is falling than it is to say, well at least they are winning and I believe the coaching staff and the team will figure this out. And if you do the former no one labels you a homer for having faith in your team. Now let the yelling at me begin.

Johnny Law 15 Report post Posted November 17, 2008 Part of it is poor play defensively and not wanting to do the work necessary to dominate. The other part is unbelievably high expectations, you win the Stanley Cup and then nab the best free agent in the game. Unless they win every game 20-0, someone would be disappointed. Some people like to head off any major disappointments early on, so when a team they have bought into and become a full %100 supporter looks like it may be headed for major disappointment some will jump off early to try to avoid the full impact. Its human nature.
Saran 1 Report post Posted November 17, 2008 The funny thing I've been thinking about is over the last couple years, before we won the cup, we were complaining about how the Red Wings just cruised through the regular season. A lot of us hoped that they would face some adversity; forcing them to improve their game and be in more "playoff like" games. Now that we are facing some adversity (3rd in the League isn't much adversity) most of us (including me) are just losing it and snapping. This is what we asked for in years before. Our team will just improve to get better in the areas they are suffering. Hopefully this adversity will make our team stronger and warm them up for playoff battles. NEpats1028 1 Report post Posted November 17, 2008 Maybe. Babs ought to be able to handle that, though. I have faith in him. I have faith in him as well. However not all All-Star teams succeed. The '02 Wings were filled with vets that knew how to spread the puck around. can this team do it? Ozzie needs to get his head in the game, 7 goals vs. Pitt aint gonna cut it. Is Conks starting tonight vs EDM?
redwing_sparty 0 Report post Posted November 17, 2008 i worry because i dont want to see this giving up 3 goals + a night turn into the story of the season. On paper the wings have what ought to be one of the top defensive units in the nhl. but lately the defense and goaltending has been more like what fans in toronto are used to then what wings fans expect to see. and its not like the wings played great defense for one season and then are falling back into an old pattern. we are used to seeing excellent d. I can't recall seeing this many high scoring games in years. Hossa has been a beast. If we had not signed him we very likely would not have the relatively impressive record that we do. (apologies for the "we's" to those of you who are offended)

Gutierrez 7 Report post Posted November 17, 2008 As someone mentioned , this team reminds me of the 05-06 team. Great power play, a lot of talent, but too much pressure on the offense and decent goaltending but nothing spectacular. Hopefully this season doesn't end the same as that one did. It just feels like guys are relying on their talent too much and not working.

Red Crazy 201 Report post Posted November 17, 2008 Not to take anything away from them, but they've been a scary scary team for the past 4 years and nothing really happened when it mattered most. We're worried because our 11 wins are 1-goal wins (empty net goals count as 1 goal win for me) and mostly against bottom feeders. When we faced a true test again SJ, Anaheim and Pitt we failed. We haven't showed the kind of puck possession dominance we're used to seeing the last couple of years in any one game so far. This is so true. when faced against a playoff team we have been beat 0-3. The teams we have been beating by a goal or two are the ones we should be killing. As Detroit fans we have come to trust that our defence will be awesome night in and night out. So far this year they have been just average so we become concerned.
TheBigRedMachine 2 Report post Posted November 17, 2008 I'm not worried. The team will get it together. I think Conklin coming in will aid in lighting the proverbial fire under Osgood's arse. As well, having the goalie switch will let the players know to pick up the slack. As for the defense, Lids is the King of D and I will leave it in his hands confidentely. Perhaps I should ask myself, "Why am I not worrying?" Slainte, TheBigRedMachine
Heroes of Hockeytown 694 Report post Posted November 17, 2008 maybe too many egos in the locker room?? It's the same team as last year, plus Hossa and minus Hasek. That's a net gain, yo. The Wings locker room oozes leadership and discipline and class, there's no way ego's got anything to do with anything.

Guest Crymson Report post Posted November 18, 2008 When the Wings regress to a borderline playoff team like Edmonton my expectations will change accordingly, but for now you'll have to excuse me if watching the team that dominated the league last year + Marian Hossa eke out mistake-laden 1-goal slopfests against teams they should be soundly defeating on a fairly regular basis does not meet my expectations. Then alter your expectations. I'm sure you'll find the games much more enjoyable if you're not being constantly disappointed. That's well within your control; don't act as if your expectations are somehow absolute, because they entirely hinge upon your choice of perspective.

That's well within your control; don't act as if your expectations are somehow absolute, because they entirely hinge upon your choice of perspective. I don't expect perfection from the Wings, but I did think they would keep more pucks out of the net then they have given up. I probably would enjoy games more if I expected flaky defense and blown third period leads all the time, but somehow I think the Wings are capable of better.
