to create even more tradition in the nhl all third jerseys should be THROWBACK ONLY. Every team, regardless of how long they have been a franchise for. I think the third jersey is a good idea, but the nhl isn't spot on with some of the styles

The "Bolts" and "Sens" jerseys are dumb in my opinion.

Dallas' is a little weak but I like it.

Atlanta and Buffalo are alright but I don't like the modern slashes and armpit piping. The Sabres jersey isn't a genuine throwback because of that.

The black jerseys in Carolina, Chicago, Boston, San Jose, Phoenix are fine but really lack imagination.

Nothing new with the Penguins, Canucks, and Leafs, but still good. The latter two teams should replace their primary jerseys with their thirds.

The Oilers', Flyers', and Islanders' are the obviously the best. The white name tape on the Flyers jerseys is weird but cool in a vintage way.

LA and St. Louis have great thirds as well. The best of those which aren't throwbacks.

i hate third jerseys. i hope we dont have one.

Rumor has it that third jerseys are going to become mandatory for all teams in two or three seasons. Would make sense what with the desperation for extra revenue and all.

If they scrapped the shoulder logos and (maybe) swapped the colours so that it's predominantly red I think the WC jersey would make a great third, though.

A lot of those teams change jersey's so often they have that "haven't we seen these before?" look. But I agree, the Leafs is OK, the Blackhawks jersey is good, but other than that, they're awful and pointless.

I, too, hope that if we're forced to get a 3rd we go back to the Cougars jersey or the striped one from '26.

I agree. Throwbacks are the best.

I really like Chicago's and St Louis's the most. I do hope the Classic Jersey becomes our 3rd Jersey.

In order of apearence on the slideshow....

Atlanta - Makes me want to puke. It's such a plain jersey. Awful coloring. I love the dark jersey they had when they first came into the league.

Boston - I like the general design, but all they really did was swap out the chest and shoulder logos. And don't they have like 7 different jersey's already?

Buffalo - Does this even count? Old logo on the new jersey, clever  .

Carolina - I like this jersey for a few reasons. I like that they went with a different color scheme, the black hurricane logo on the shoulder, and something else I'm a big fan of - different equipment colors. The latter may sound stupid, but I've just always felt that if it's an alternate jersey, the equipment should also look different.

Chicago - Is that Eric Daze?

Dallas - Did someone get really high Sunday night and forget about a project due Monday morning? 'Oh s***! Maybe if I change our jersey from black to white, no one will notice!'

Edmonton - I really love how they meshed the old with the new here. And again with the different equipment.

L.A. - Is that the new practice threads? Nice idea, just too plain. Bring back the purple and golds!!

NYI - Looks more like someone screwed up an order than an alternate.

Ottawa - It might be somewhat plain, but I like it for two reasons. 1. It's significantly different than anything they've had and 2. They didn't try to create a cheesy logo, they went with the K.I.S.S.

Philly - Same as Edmonton, love the old and new together.

Phoenix - My only beef is they kept the equipment. It just looks weird with dark jersey and socks.

Pittsburgh - It's really more of a throwback, but I like how different it is from the norm.

San Jose - Looks very similar to the blacks they used to wear. Not impressed.

St. Louis - Someone wants to be the Pittsburgh of the West...

Tampa - Love how different it is from the norm, but just wish they would have went with blue shorts and helmets too.

Toronto - I don't care what jersey it is. I love Toronto's jerseys. So my opinion doesn't count here.

Vancouver - Unimpressed. I think the old school red, yellow and black V would have been better.

I liked most of them a lot. Especially the Sharks, Blues (far better than the old note itself), and Hurricanes new third jerseys. The ones I didn't like were the "Sens" and "Bolts" jerseys, which are rather lacking in creativity. I'm pretty sure people know the team names and don't need it spelled out for them. Some teams made the wording work, and quite honestly I don't see anything wrong with Dallas's, especially if you ever saw their steers 'n queers third jersey from a few years back, it's actually quite an improvement over that. I mean, people around here proudly wear "SF" / "SFSU", and "SJ" logos from colleges / sports teams. I can understand spelling the city, or even spelling the team with a decent logo and color on the jersey, just not the spelling by itself (not sure where Atlanta was going with theirs).

Since when does crappy graphics = heritage? or old style?

Unsuprizingly, I like the red wing's winter classic jersey design. It takes the old design and makes it modern. something almost all other jerseys on this list horribly failed at.

The guy that runs this site was on xm last week, http://www.icethetics.info/

Here is kind of an answer about Detroit and others having third jersies.

All the new third jerseys are out. The ranking has been released. But is this really it for third jerseys?

This is from the link -

No. We'll get to start this all over again next year but on a much smaller scale. I can tell you there are at least two teams that are working on alternate sweaters for 2009. The Minnesota Wild are to have a green (finally!) third jersey for their 10th anniversary season and the Calgary Flames already have a final design in hand — though I can't tell you what it looks like.

Thought I'd get those seeds planted early. As far as the other 10 teams, I'm hoping for third jerseys from the Rangers, Ducks and Panthers next season. I don't expect anything from the Devils, Red Wings or Canadiens. So to sum up...

3rd introduced in '08 // Thrashers, Bruins, Sabres, Hurricanes, Blackhawks, Stars, Oilers, Kings, Islanders, Senators, Flyers, Coyotes, Penguins, Sharks, Blues, Lightning, Maple Leafs, Canucks

3rd expected in '09 // Flames, Wild

3rd status unknown, but hopeful // Ducks, Avalanche, Panthers, Predators, Rangers

3rd not expected anytime soon // Blue Jackets, Red Wings, Canadiens, Devils, Capitals

Quick note on those teams categorized as "not expected anytime soon." I didn't just pull that out of thin air. Blue Jackets and Capitals management have both publicly said a third jersey is not in their near future. The Canadiens still have a couple new Centennial throwbacks for next year (who knows, one may turn into a third jersey in the future). And the Red Wings and Devils have historically never had a third jersey. I wouldn't expect that to change without warning.

That should cover everybody. Just wanted to keep you guys updated. Speaking of updates, lots coming over the course of this holiday weekend. I'll let you know what's new via the blog.

Good news for Red Wings fans, imo.

I liked Pittsburgh's (which was last years WC jersey) and I've always like the Rink-and-Stick logo along with the colors of the Canucks throwbacks. Great uniform. I also like the Buffalo classic logo.

As for this years, I really like St. Louis' and LA's. Both sharp and classy (especially STL).

That's like saying nobody should have a problem with me kicking a puppy because it's quite an improvement over the Holocaust.
