Avery comments & suspension

I'm just glad the Stars are finally tired of him. Turco, Richards, the owners, coaches etc. are all done. That said, suspending him directly after this game would've been the right move by the league, everyone was excited for this game today, it's all I heard people talking about downtown. Some guy had an older Dallas jersey with Averys name and an X through it on the back. I'm still going to watch, but ratings wise this would've been the most entertaining all year. But there's still 3 games left in the year between them, so I'm sure they'll get another chance.

:blink::blink:

Does anybody besides me realize that nothing he said was untrue. His ex-girlfriends do date other NHL players. What's false about that?

This is why the NHL is not popular in the dumb-ass national media. Other sports leagues go out of their way to market stars just for situations like this, why this league suspends a guy for stating the truth in a meaningless comment.

If the league never suspended Forsberg or Kariya for diving, why are they fining someone for this comment, especially since it wasn't necessarily a disparaging comment, and was the god-honest truth?

Stars' owner Tom Hicks also released a statement on the team's website in which he said he supported the NHL's decision.

"Had the league not have suspended him, the Dallas Stars would have," Hicks stated. "This organization will not tolerate such behaviour, especially from a member of our hockey team. We hold our team to a higher standard and will continue to do so."

General Manager Brett Hull did not comment as he was too busy trying to hide his chuckle behind a cup of coffee.*

* Ok, maybe I added the last part.

So does this mean that NHL players are now forbidden from ever speaking the truth about anything any other player does, especially since it's in the public spotlight?

I mean, it's not like Avery stated that he saw Phaneuf entering a whorehouse or that Phaneuf is a secret member of the KKK or something. The fact that he's dating Cuthbert and that Stoll is dating Rachel Hunter is public knowledge. I don't understand what he did wrong, let alone to be suspended for it.

God I just hate this league sometimes for stupid s*** like this.

But... THINK OF THE CHILDREN!!!

Dallas actually already had one of their defenders, Janik, playing forward.... that's a rough suspension to an already depleted team, two hours before the game.

i'm not exactly sure i'd want a guy like avery being promoted by the NHL as their "bad-ass" or whatever. i definitely do not want to generalize but i typically associate players in the NFL and/or NBA as having less class than NHL players. if the NHL wants to promote class and respect then fine by me.

If the NHL ever wants the recognition that the other leagues get, than this is a mistake.

I would have loved to see these 2 players fight each other and for this story to possibly make it big on the sports networks. Now the only network that will talk about this game is the NHL network.

Bettman consistently does things to make the league as bad as possible both for fans and for non-fans.

You know, I'm mixed on this. Avery's an ass...but this seemed more fine-worthy than suspension-worthy. Now the game that everyone wanted to watch...is going to become the game that no one cares about (outside of Dallas and Calgary).

from perezhilton.com

Who knew the National Hockey League was so strict???? And lame!

The NHL has suspended Dallas Stars' winger Sean Avery indefinitely due to some remarks he made before Tuesday's game agaist the Calgary Flames.

Avery is being suspended for talking smack about the Flames' Dion Phaneuf.

So, what did he say that caused Avery to get suspended indefinitely? Seems kind of childish to us to penalize someone for s***-talking.

Avery told TSN on camera that, "I am really happy to be back in Calgary, I love Canada. I just want to comment on how it's become like a common thing in the NHL for guys to fall in love with my sloppy seconds. I don't know what that's about. Enjoy the game tonight."

Burn!!!

Turns out Phaneuf is dating Avery's ex-girlfriend, some D-list wactress named Elisha Cuthbert. We actually thought his comments were HIGHlarious.

Apparently the league's suspension is legal under Article 6 of the NHL Constitution. It allows for suspension due to any conduct "detrimental to the League or game of hockey."

This coming from a game where players are known to knock other player's teeth out????

Seriously, when did hockey get all uptight?

As for Avery, he'll be meeting with NHL commissioner Gary Bettman before a final decision is made on his suspension.

What do U think of the NHL's decision to suspense Avery????

Exactly, and that's why this league is always going to be an afterthought. It's run by idiots who are afraid of marketing themselves in ways that appeal to the mass public.

P.S. That's a great avatar. And as I remember it, I'm the one who provided you with the inspiration for making it. I see this as one of my great contributions to LGW. :D

Give me a break. The guy's a colossal ****** who, in the long run, is going to hurt the league more than he's going to help it. His own team's barely coming to his defense in the media.

I say good for the league/Bettman/whoever made the call. The general public already thinks hockey players are all idiotic goons. How is Avery calling his ex-girlfriend "sloppy seconds" supposed to help? 'Cause it could lead to a total beat-down zomg? Please.

You must work for Bettman's staff, which means that you've never heard of the idea that all publicity is good.

Comments like this aren't going to hurt the league in any way whatsoever, because the public enjoys this kind of stuff. Whether they should or shouldn't enjoy it is a different story, but facts are facts.

Oh, sorry, I forgot -- you're a meat head. Which explains why you're making the argument that frowning on comments like Avery's will definitely hurt the league, whereas taking no action against this sort of thing won't hurt the league "in any way whatsoever."

Hockey is, by and large, viewed by the general American public as a sport for talentless thugs. Avery's comment is exactly the kind of thing you'd expect to come out of the mouth of a talentless thug. And you're talking about how the league needs to break from its own conventions by...patting Avery on the back? Good job, buddy.

P.S. Obviously I do, in fact, work for Bettman.

i dont think hes that funny, just an attention *****. seems like some of the stars dont like him.

It's funny how Turco of all people is talking. With the way he's played this year, he should keep his mouth shut and focus on rebuilding his goaltending skills.

I'm flattered that you think I'm a meat-head, but unfortunately I'm not.

And where's the proof that hockey as viewed by others as being for untalented thugs? Where do you get that from? These are the types of things that happen all the time in other sports and get publicity, whether it be good or bad publicity. No one in the public would say that Avery is an untalented thug for this, because no one in the public knows who Avery is.

In any other sport, a guy like Avery would be a widely known person around the country. But because he's in the NHL, he like every other player not named Sidney Crosby, is completely unknown. The league needs to understand that in order to become mainstream, they're going to have to let things like this happen just like they do in other leagues. The American public doesn't like talking about choir boys. Just look at Plaxico Burress.

Can the league censor free speech? I don't think Avery said anything that wasn't true given that Phaneuf and Stoll are dating his ex-girlfriends. Perhaps he could have been a wee bit more politically correct than "sloppy seconds" but I'm sure he said it for effect and to raise the hype around the game tonight. It would have been awesome to see what Phaneuf did to him or if they would have gone at it. Seriously though, Burke and Lowe said worse things about each other and neither one of them was fined or suspended so the league shouldn't be coming down on Avery any harder just cause he's Avery. He's entertaining though, you can't deny that.

I can't speak French, so those ads may sound confusing if I'm working on them.

Seriously, though, does the league want all it's players to wear boy scout outfits when they're being interviewed after a game? The fact that the media in a city like Dallas is crowding around a hockey player for any reason is a good thing.

All he did was made TRUTHFUL comments about his ex-girlfriends. This is not a comment that will make all Americans look down upon hockey players.
