USA TODAY: Lidstrom looking up at Weber, Boyle in latest rankings

Nick didn't look a whole lot like Nick for the 1st 10 or 15 games. Now he looks like Nick again. I wouldn't be terribly surprised if the voters gave it to someone else this year just for that, but I bet he'll start getting quite a few people back in his corner as the season goes on.

Whatever makes you sleep easier at night!

It's my new mantra  But really, I think we are all expecting some better team defense to actually be a reality at some point. It's not like he is out of the hunt at all. Call me an optimist, but +11 with the team defense they've been playing is nothing to scoff at. If they turn that around as a team his +/- will take off. The point production is where he would need to pick it up, especially to shake off the defensive stink of the first 30.

Lidstrom is Detroit's number one penalty killer and number one defensive defenseman. Considering Detroit's cruddy even strength play, Lidstrom's +/- is outstanding. Boyle and Weber do not even play on the penalty kill. How many points should they need to beat Lidstrom by to overcome their average at best defensive skills?

1. Duh. Offense = win.

Edit for clarity: That 1 point can be a secondary assist.

Weber was a -13 at one point, which isn't all his fault, but his scoring has slowed down somewhat as of late. Lots of hockey left to be played and not many people really watch this guy play, especially the media from the East. He would have to have some eye popping numbers in order to get in the Norris finalist group.

Absolutely no way would I give Lidstrom the Norris at this point in the season. He's a Red Wing and I like that, but there has been more deserving this year. Wings fans can be unbiased.

if he doesn't change his play this season he has no reason being up for Norris this season... name alone shouldn't get you that trophy. Captain or not, he is not deserving it so far.

Lidstrom is a +11 on a team that is -2 at even strength. That is outstanding.

Him having an "off" year defensively still ranks him as one of the best defensive defenseman in the NHL. Of the defensemen that are currently outscoring him only Souray and Blake are top options for their teams on the penalty kill and none of them have as large of a +/- differential as Lidstrom compared to their team.

Most of the guys ahead of him in points should need a Coffey-like year in order to beat Lidstrom.

He looks very vulnerable defensively, and I'm sure being under the microscope, it means he better have one of the best second-half of a season in his career to not only be nominated, but especially win yet another Norris.

Chara has been by far the best overall defenceman in the league and is deserving of the Norris. Weber and Boyle have had good seasons, but not Norris quality. I think 30 games in Lidstrom has been top 10 in the league, but not Norris quality, he could always turn it around of course, but right now, yes, he is looking up at guys.

The Vezina for sure is changing hands this season.

Wow, that's a big call. You think it might have something to do with Brodeur being injured for almost the entire season?

Right now id give it to Boyle or Chara but Nick is by no means out of the race

If the voting were today - Boyle would get the trophy. Nick has better stats than Chara right now though. Weber won't get it because he plays for the Preds. Still alot of hockey to be played. Personally, although I love Nick racking up the Norris's I'd rather have the Cup! Here's hoping for that. :)

There's a lot of hockey to be played, so I wouldn't rule out the Captain.

I've repeatedly been on Nick this year about his defensive zone play. He hasn't looked like himself all season. However, he has been playing better and even if he does lose the Norris this year. If I had only 1 game to play and I needed a win. And I could pick 1 dman to play that game for me. I'd still pick Nick Lidstrom right now. Although Chara is nipping at his heels. Nick's still the top overall defender in the game.

As for Weber and Boyle. I like Weber, plays with an edge and offensively he's really blossomed. Pretty decent in his own zone as well and plays physical. Dan Boyle I don't know much about. Seems like a smallish, offensive only type of guy. I don't see him being mentioned with the best defensive dmen in the league so IMO he'd be a clear cut case of a dman winning the Norris purely for offensive stats, which is garbage.

The one guy in that article said it best, 'nick's a victim of his own success'. If he doesn't look like his normal self, it's not going to look good to the voters, even if a lesser nick lidstrom is still better than everybody else.
