RWK23 0 Report post Posted January 3, 2009 Chelios. And he played like 1 minute. Pointless... It's was a really classy act if you ask me. Just another example of why the Red Wings organization is the class of the league and why players love playing here.
Detroit # 1 Fan 2,204 Report post Posted January 3, 2009 Chelios did more in that 1:57 then Kopecky would've done with his 7:35. Peter Kopecky looks alright for Slovakia.

Mors 201 Report post Posted January 3, 2009 Not sure why anyone seems concerned with Kopecky being benched, he's awful and the sooner he's gone the better. (which will probably coincide with Hossa signing somewhere else and moving out of Kopecky's house )
GMRwings1983 8,804 Report post Posted January 3, 2009 His destruction of Patrick Sharp seems like it happened ages ago. For some reason, he's pussied out of every fight since then. Bizzarre.

Trust me, we will miss a guy like this come playoff time. You can never have enough good D, remember 2007 conference finals?
norrisnick 1 Report post Posted January 3, 2009 It's was a really classy act if you ask me. Just another example of why the Red Wings organization is the class of the league and why players love playing here. Was it classy for Kopecky who had played every game so far? He got robbed of playing in the playoffs last season by injury and now of playing in the Classic in favor of sentimentality for a guy that doesn't know when to quit. "It was (disappointing), but it's over," Kopecky said Friday following practice at the Excel Energy Center. "I don't want to think about it. It's history. It was hard. What can you do? You've got to move on. I wish like hell to play in that game, but on the other side, I'm so happy for Cheli. He deserved it. It's his hometown. I understood. But I couldn't wait for yesterday to be over. I shut off my cell phone. People were calling me, texting me. I just didn't want to deal with it. I just wanted it to be over." Time for Chelios to step up. He's a great guy, but he's know Gordie Howe so why even try. As a D coach of some type, helping the kids come up, he would be great. 12Newf 0 Report post Posted January 3, 2009 its a pretty tough call really and especially after reading that quote from kopecky. i feel for the guy but chelios has been in detroit for a long time and to deny him the chance to play in this game would have been a pretty big deal. As for Winter Classic, Chelios is still better player than Kopecky.
The Secret 304 Report post Posted January 3, 2009 Kopecky is a bum, he is filler and thats about all. Chelios at 46 has more to offer then Kopecky ever will and I'm really glad they let Chelios play for the Classic, how ever little it was! Perhaps Cheli can't contribute as much as he used to in games but he sure can in being a mentor to younger players... he's a winner, he's been a winner where ever he's played and he has alot to offer from his experience! Helm replaced Hartigan. McCarty replaced Kopecky. Chelios isn't remotely close to being better than Kopecky at this point.
GoWings1905 2,694 Report post Posted January 3, 2009 Kopecky didn't play in the Winter Classic? I hardly noticed the difference from when he actually does dress.

Pretty tough call on that one, considering the comparison. I don't disagree that it's time for Chelios to retire, but I'm not going to pity Kopecky who has contributed all of 19 points in 139 games now for the Wings. I think he's gotten more than his fair opportunity to play for this team.
