Son of a Wing 1,644 Report post Posted January 10, 2009 (edited) Tsn Link Brendan Shanahan is a New Jersey Devil -- sort of. Sources says the unrestricted free agent winger is joining the team, but has yet to agree to terms on a contract and it isn't clear at this point when that will happen or when he will be ready to play a game with them. But sources say Shanahan will start skating in New Jersey today and the details of him officially becoming part of the team will be worked out in the days to come. The Devils are in Los Angeles starting a six-game road trip. Shanahan, drafted second overall by the Devils in 1987, spent the previous two seasons with the New York Rangers but was not offered a contract to remain with the club. The 39-year-old became a free agent after last season and was planning on returning to the Rangers for at least one more campaign. Rangers general manager Glen Sather repeatedly told him to hold on as the team could make room for him. After four months of waiting, he decided to move on and his agent Rick Curran began listening to offers from other clubs. In 20 NHL seasons with the Rangers, Devils, Detroit Red Wings, Hartford Whalers and St. Louis Blues, the three-time Stanley Cup champion has 650 career goals and 690 assists in 1,490 games. Interesting.....Hope all works out for him. Edited January 10, 2009 by Son of a Wing
YoungGuns1340 1 Report post Posted January 10, 2009 Good thing New York sacrificed Shanahan's presence on the team by offering 6M to Wade Redden and 5M to Roszival.
GMRwings1983 8,803 Report post Posted January 10, 2009 (edited) Good thing New York sacrificed Shanahan's presence on the team by offering 6M to Wade Redden and 5M to Roszival. Both of whom are overpaid. I am a little confused with Shanny, because even though he's past his prime, he could still add scoring depth and experience to any team. I guess he must have limited his choices to only a few teams, which would explain why he hasn't been signed yet. SDavis35 140 Report post Posted January 10, 2009 I miss Shanny, why can't he play here for the 500k or so that we've got Cheli and Dmac for? I was wondering last night where he was now, good to know he's found somewhere.

revnic 0 Report post Posted January 10, 2009 what a loser. he could have stayed in detroit and retire as a legend, now hes gana retired a washed up nobody. All of this because apparently Babcock's coaching isn't up to his standards. lol....
Vincanni 1 Report post Posted January 10, 2009 Glad to hear he'll be playing again, Shanny is one of the NHL's best personalities and still my favorite player outside the Wings organization.

All of this because apparently Babcock's coaching isn't up to his standards. lol.... He already is a legend. Would the Wings have won in 97 without him? I doubt it. He is the walking definition of a power forward. Three Cups, six hundred plus goals and he's a nobody. Whatever. Hate to break it but at some point in the future Babcock's coaching won't be up to Detroit's standards and he will be let go, fire, etc. He won't be coaching this team forever. And where would Shanahan have fit on this team when Coach B came? Everyone complains for a hard hitting forward. Well we got rid of that guy when the new system came into effect. You get the power forward or the system and we picked the system. Glad Shanny is going back to his original team. Have him play this year and the next. Let him retire and then get him to run this league and throw that NBA punk out on his a$$.

You get the power forward or the system and we picked the system. I agree with the rest of your post for the most part, but Shanahan wasn't a power forward anymore when he left. He was purely a perimeter player and a PP specialist -- just like he is now.

As someone said at the time, when he spent that last season playing as Datsyuk's wing, he had the quietest 40 goal season in NHL history. Thanks for the memories, but I wasn't sorry to see him go. He's achieved everything possible in the game, by carrying on playing like this he's only tarnishing his reputation (a la Chelios).

Lets try to remember what awesome career endings those guys had. Don't void out the possibility that if Shanny stayed, the Wings may have still won the cup. If he stayed, he would have probably been given the C, would have had his number retired and would be a lot more recognized at this moment than he is now. Instead, he spends half a season begging teams to take him in. Sad. Says the person who made this post. Oh the irony. I didn't make this post, stupid. Guest nutz2u Report post Posted January 11, 2009 He left because he didn't like playing for Babcock because he demanded more effort than Shanny wanted to give.................. Glad he's gone, without Datsyuk he would have been lucky to get 25 goals.

VM1138 1,921 Report post Posted January 11, 2009 Shanny was one of my favorites, but I'm not so sure he has the heart to win anymore, and when he left, though it disappointed me, I now think that he might not have fit very well into this Lidstrom-Babcock era Red Wings squad. Wish him the best of luck, he's still an effective player and will help out any team who signs him.
