Guest GordieSid&Ted Report post Posted January 22, 2009 This is why I truly think the NHL is the best, you wouldn't see this in the NBA. Story It's a shame that the NHL is viewed as a fringe sport by so many in the States. The players, the management, organizations and their respective owners are some of the best people. Maybe if I watched/read more NFL stuff I might notice what those organizations do so I can't say the other major sports leagues don't do good things. But it's very well known by hockey fans that hockey players and teams constantly go the extra mile for their fans. That's a great story. And who knew Matt Cooke could spend a few minutes not being a ****** bag? J/K.
ManLuv4Clears 7 Report post Posted January 22, 2009 Very heartwarming story, but also very sad to read that both sister and brother suffer from cystic fibrosis. I could never imagine what that family has to fight thru.

Why can't you be like this all the time? In all seriousness, though, that is a very cool move that that kid is going to remember forever.
Datsyerberger 279 Report post Posted January 22, 2009 Say what you will about him being an occasional diver, a Therrien-influenced whiner, overhyped and possibly even a touch overrated.. I have great respect for the time Sid sets aside to work with kids. Same goes for Stamkos, too, who is already doing quite a bit working with them. It's good to see the new generation of NHLers is a classy one.

He's definitely a good person. Iginla and Vinny are both similar in that respect. In Calgary Iginla's well known for his community service during the summer. Blueliner 69 Report post Posted January 22, 2009 Great story, but please, other sports do stuff like this too. esteef Yeah, I've seen Big Ben and the Steelers, Shaq, and other teams do it. Sportscenter has a feature during the summer about these kinds of wishes.
shannyfan1414 0 Report post Posted January 22, 2009 Wow!!!! Great story. It made me respect that Crosby guy and the entire Pittsburgh organization a little. It's stories like this that i wish would get picked on a national basses. People should know that there are amazing professional athletes out there that do great things for people. Instead we only hear about idiots that involved in shooting themselves in the leg, dog fighting and drugs. Great post and thanks for sharing.

Cern 0 Report post Posted January 22, 2009 After meeting with Shero -- who signed the 8-year-old for $1 Would it be in bad taste to remark that he'd probably be a better deal than Draper this season? :X

mjlegend 155 Report post Posted January 22, 2009 Would it be in bad taste to remark that he'd probably be a better deal than Draper this season? :X Yeah, but I lol'd. Kenny probably tried to get him but he couldn't get him under the cap unless we waived Kopecky.
Ms_Hockey 0 Report post Posted January 22, 2009 That story made me cry. (I know, I know. I'm SO female.) I respect the team & the organization for what they're doing. Man, two kids with cystic fibrosis. =/
HomeNugget 2 Report post Posted January 22, 2009 Does that signing count against the cap? Nice story!! I'm not sure it's a legal signing. The kid's only 8. Shouldn't the Penguins have to wait for him declare for the draft, go undrafted, and then offer him a free agent contract? I'm not sure what Ray Shero is trying to pull, but I hope the league looks into this.
hooon 1,089 Report post Posted January 22, 2009 i hope they tought him how to dive.... sorry, i just want to insult the penguins (like always) but its hard to in a story like this. I cannot imagine being 8 years old and getting to be a part of this experience. Life changing, heart warming stuff. hehe they lost to the hurricanes though... Imagine he's in a long game that goes to overtime... he gets set up for a perfect goal, goalie way out of position, puck on his stick right in front of the net... and then the time he's allowed to work on any given day expires. "Sorry, gotta run!"
Earthhuman 8 Report post Posted January 22, 2009 So Fleury was scored on by an 8-year-old. No wonder the Penguins couldn't score that night, they must have been playing nervous defense in case someone dumped the puck in on goal. But Pittsburgh is officially alright in my books. It helps that they've been losing miserably.

FireCaptain 563 Report post Posted January 23, 2009 (edited) Exactly my thoughts when I read the article. What an unfortunate situation for that family. A great read and a classy move by the Penguins. Very heartwarming story, but also very sad to read that both sister and brother suffer from cystic fibrosis. I could never imagine what that family has to fight thru. Edited January 23, 2009 by FireCaptain
