OsGOD 3 Report post Posted January 23, 2009 This furthers my stance that the only reason any suspensions were handed out is because Crosby is already going. If Crosby wasn't going, the NHL would never suspend him. Its setting an example with two class acts to make sure next year players don't get injured around the all-star game. There is no point in Lidstrom and Datsyuk going to the ASG to rub elbows with the media because the media doesn't want to rub elbows with them. Datsyuk has been in the top 5 players in the league for a few years now, but how often does anyone try to talk about him? Thats exactly why i said Crosby was a dumb ass (youth go figure) to even bow to bettys demands.. like he would even suspend him for this... He barely touches Pronger for a lot worse. I don't think Crosby was planning on going either, it sounded like he only decided to go to avoid the suspension ...
OsGOD 3 Report post Posted January 23, 2009 I think someone should go around stealing everyones right skate, elbow pad and shin guard... and then we can all giggle at all the players having to miss the next "real" game
NeverForgetMac25 483 Report post Posted January 23, 2009 and i ask.. big effing deal... the NHL isn't going to collapse because his (added on after the fact) ass isn't going to be there grimacing in pain, is it? I gotta agree with Mack_Attack here. Like the rules or not, both Dats and Lids could most certainly go and take part in the off-ice events. Whether they're boring or not, that's not the issue. Then how did the NHL's poster boy not even know about this until today (and rushed to Montreal to be at Bettman's side)? I highly doubt Shero would be that careless with Crosby. Perhaps they were waiting to see if the league was going to follow through on its stance.

I am not sure how painful hip flexors are... but flying and then staying in someone elses bed and having to be active on it for 2 days doesn't sound that pleasant nor beneficial to recovery. lets go pavel 2 Report post Posted January 23, 2009 From Helen St. James ... link The Red Wings will not have All-Stars Nicklas Lidstrom and Pavel Datsyuk available next week when they play at Columbus. That's because the NHL, in an effort to ensure its star players will attend the All-Star Game events (it's this weekend in Montreal, the game is Sunday) has decided to enforce an understanding that anyone who pulls out must miss either the game before or after the All-Star break. Lidstrom and Datsyuk officially pulled out after Tuesday's game, in which they both played. I just now was told by an NHL spokesman that Lidstrom and Datsyuk "are sitting out due to 'nagging injuries,' which will preclude them from participating in the first game following the break." Sounds like they're not actually suspended for the Columbus game, they just can't play? Maybe it's just semantics, but perhaps it avoids besmirching their "permanent record". NeverForgetMac25 483 Report post Posted January 23, 2009 Penalize a player a regular season game, for missing an exhibition game fluff session. Makes perfect cent$ to me No doubt a suspension seems too harsh for something like this, but if the teams and players were aware of this rule (no matter what anyone thinks of it), they still need to go. This isn't directed at you Opie, but I'm surprised so many people here are up in arms if this was something that was decided almost a year ago. I suppose its because people don't want to see Lids or Dats miss any time (I don't either), but they have an option to not miss a game. Get on a plane. MacK_Attack 108 Report post Posted January 23, 2009 Can i ask why you even care if is he is there... Do you have ticket or something... or a member of the press that would get to shake his hands? Newsflash to all involved... there are more fans here in Metro detroit that wouldnt mind getting to meet pavs this weekend then everyone combined in hab land... maybe betty could have put dats and lids under state arrest or something.... let him do commmunity service to a community that actually wanted him to be there? I'm involved in PR and it's a pain in the ass when you line people up for these types of events and they bail at the last minute. Contrary to popular belief, this is not a fan weekend. It's a corporate weekend, and given how hard it is to get corporate dollars these days, it matters more than ever to have every star player possible at these events to sell the game to ones with the big pocketbooks. Barrie 900 Report post Posted January 23, 2009 I wonder if Lidstrom and Datsyuk appeal? I would bet Lidstrom is in Sweden right now and Datsyuk in Russia with a week off. Bettman probably didn't start crying about this until today, making it to late and insane for them to fly back to North America just to sign autographs and pose for pictures in Montreal. However, doing nothing about it and taking an extra night off is probably is a bigger "screw up" statement to Bettman than appealing. I gotta say I'm a little proud of Lidstrom and Datsyuk . Enjoy the much needed break boys.

MTU_Huskies963 398 Report post Posted January 23, 2009 I don't think this is really a suspension. The rule is they have to miss a game before or after the AS break to verify their Injury.
rivieraillusions 0 Report post Posted January 23, 2009 They would have been warned long before today. This "rule" isn't a secret among those involved in the league. It's been around for a while. Actually, the "rule" was just instituted last year.
MacK_Attack 108 Report post Posted January 23, 2009 Actually, the "rule" was just instituted last year. 11 months is more than enough time to let everybody know that they have to be there.
puckloo39 5,686 Report post Posted January 23, 2009 Actually, the "rule" was just instituted last year. Possibly because the stars who were voted in declined for personal reasons? Bettman saw this coming, and it's his own fault. Either re-vamp the selection process, or scrap the whole thing. It's embarrassing.

lets go pavel 2 Report post Posted January 23, 2009 Sounds like the Wings knew this was coming and decided their players' health come first, regardless of the consequences ... Detroit GM Ken Holland said Lidstrom, 38, has been dealing with tendinitis for a number of seasons and wanted to use the All-Star break to try and get into a position where he can play pain-free down the stretch. Holland knew there was the potential for Lidstrom to miss a game after the break, but didn't pressure his star defenseman to play. "Nik Lidstrom has been an incredible ambassador for our team and for our game. I respect his decision," Holland told ESPN.com on Friday. Holland was less enthusiastic about the policy that will sit his star defenseman for a game. "I disagree with the decision, but I'm not running the league," he said.
